In the beginning, John was given the choice to avenge his family or die alongside them. He made his decision and has been seeking redemption ever since. Is it possible for a vampire, who has done unspeakable deeds, to change his inherent nature enough to go to Heaven once he takes the big sleep?

As if by divine intervention, our witty anti-hero stumbles across his potential salvation in the form of Father Thomes Philseep. Only problem is the holy man has been battling evil entities, like John, his entire life. Can a preternatural being convince a warrior of the Light to help him cleanse his soiled soul — or does an eternity in the abyss of Hell await the abomination? Most importantly, did he leave the oven on?

My name is Hunter, and I’m a wordaholic. I’m also about to break the fourth wall…of your mindhole. Because there is a true story behind this…well…story.

It begins with two best friends who grew up together, breaking rules and raising hell as they shaped each other’s personalities into the shameless assholes they are today. Well, at least for one of them, but I’ll get to that in a moment. These two boys—let’s call them Hunter and John—were all but inseparable. John excelled at creating music powerful enough to make angels weep and being the funniest asshole in Texas while Hunter dabbled—poorly, I might add—in his humble writings. Because they were self-declared brothers from other mothers, John respected Hunter’s humble writings as much as I—I mean Hunter (stupid third person perspective)—respected John’s musical magic. John’s tunes could have changed the world, one day…

One fine day, after reading one of Hunter’s horrifically detailed short stories about a serial killer, John asked Hunter to write a story about him.

“Hell yeah, dude! What do you want to be?” Hunter asked, brimming with honor and biting back a very manly squee.

“A vampire,” John responded with a mischievous gleam in his eye. “But not one of those sparkly ones. A true bad ass!”

“Done!” Hunter crowed with a smile and an accompanying high five.

“No, dude. Promise. Promise you’ll write and finish a book about me. You are the most prolific writer of our generation!” John said. (Something like that. I might be paraphrasing a little, but you get the gist of it). “I would consider it an honor to live on for eternity with your words as my life’s blood.”

Hunter agreed, never to realize the weight of that promise until one Sunday morning when John’s mother called, crying incoherently.

John…had died.

Hunter was left in a cold world without his best friend and doppelgänger. Hunter still thinks about that moment to this day. How the morning light crept through the bedroom window while Hunter stared at the ceiling, noticing how the popcorn texture created cruel, jagged shadows. How everything started to blur as his chest was crushed beneath the weight of what he was hearing, each word stacking heavily upon the other until only fitful, ragged gasps of air could escape his throat. Only fiery tears existed, especially after the horrific realization that Hunter now had to make some of the hardest phone calls of his life to the circle of friends who orbited around John’s solar pull.

Their star was no more, leaving their universe a colder and darker place.

John not only left Hunter, but a friend named Valenta as well. There was also Nathanial and Depweg. The friends were each stricken numb with the loss of such a beloved flare of life. But…

When the three found out that Hunter was keeping his promise to write the greatest story ever told—starring their dear friend, John—they demanded to be a part of the adventure. Each of them immediately knew what type of supernatural character they wanted to play in this urban fantasy eulogy. It would be a funeral pyre of words, and their fictional personas would be John’s pallbearers.

So please, as you read the following pages, feel free to laugh. Laugh at the situations John is placed in and his dickish dialogue to those around him, because John is 100% in this story without alteration (albeit he is a vampire). Laugh and let his memory live on inside the theater of your mind. Like he does in ours.

Thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my beating heart, for giving my best friend the chance to live again. You are part of this magical ritual, and that would make him the happiest man in the…well, wherever the hell he is.

Deliverance Book .5 of The Preternatural Chronicles by Hunter Blain is a short prequel to a series about a vampire and a priest. It was short but I liked the unique vampire concept the author has going and that he has other creatures in the book too. What didn't ring true to me was the dialogue. I will continue the series to see where it goes.

Interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about the main character. He's not exactly your stereotype vamp. But the situations, the concepts, intrique me. Once I finish some adulting, I'm going in for round 2 (or 1, actually).

First we start with a Punny Vampire who really does not want to be evil so kills only bad people. Then enter a Prist who would like to help save his soul. With these two things you can probably imagine where things might go.
Luke Daniels does a great job of Narrating this Series. With the Virus and self isolation I needed a humorous story to brighten up my day!!

As far as prequels go, this was a pretty darn good one. A quick introduction to the funny vampire John Cook and a good tease to what is to come. I made the decision to read this prequel short story before sinking my teeth into the first novel, and I'm glad I did. It's definitely built the stage to which the show can commence on. I look forward to reading on to see what happens next!

A good primer for the series. I'm glad I read it before I started book one. Plus, it was free. Bonus!

Love it!

I love UF, but must admit, with a few exceptions, I've grown rather bored with vampire stories. But Mr. Blain has managed to a new twist that I'm loving so far. Only through the novella and I'm already hooked. Bravo!

Amazing character build. Funny and sad and intriguing. This novella does exactly what it is supposed to- make you want more of the charactor and more of the full story of who John is. Is a Vampire inherently bad and evil or can reasons behind actions show us a different view and prove bad isn't always bad?

The Crow meets True Blood

Other reviews have called this Deadpool if he was a vampire. I can see that but I see a greater connection with the morbid humor delivered by the anti-hero Eric Draven, if he was a vampire played by Robert Knepper (T-Bag from Prison Break). The Crow being my favorite movie (enough to have the movie logo tattooed on my arm with the quote "it can't rain all the time.”), I felt right at home listening and reading along via whispersync. Luke Daniels nails the narration and I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it. Don't pass this one up. I'm going to go grab book 1 now and the rest of the series if im being honest!

A quick little listen (I did the audiobook version) and...I have mixed feelings.

Some of the stuff introduced here was quite cool. And yes, I understand this little story had a lot of heavy lifting to do to act as a series opener. On that aspect, I think it did okay.

Some of the stuff though? Basically controlling blood Green Lantern style? Nope. Didn't work for me. But much of it did.

Where the whole thing fell down for me was the main character. For a 500 year old vampire concerned about spending an eternity in Hell for his sins, he's...well, there's no easy way to say it, he's a fucking doofus. He's shallow, more concerned about his hair and his look and his teenage patter with everyone that it overwhelms the greater story. I'm not looking for the stereotypical gloomy vampire here, but good god, give me a sense of him learning something over the previous five centuries, and not degrading to a step above pothead status.

One final complaint. I think Blain might have used the word "preternatural" at least once per page. Find another way of describing things. It's off-putting.

Still trying to decide if I can last through a full novel of this.

DELIVERANCE: (Book 0.5 The Preternatural Chronicles): HUNTER BLAIN: Narration: LUKE DANIELS.

AN ALPHAHOLE VAMP WITH A CONSCIOUS, AND A MAN OF GOD ON A MISSION: CLEAN UP THE STREETS OF HOUSTON & TAKE OUT THE TRASH!

THE ULTIMATE ODE TO A BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER! JOHN ON, WAYWRD SON!! YOU'LL FIND PEACE WHEN HUNTER'S DONE!!!

Word of warning, this is not your average teen or young adult series with young, sexy, brooding, shirtless, sparkly (usually) or bronze sculpted statues as vampires & other supernatural predators.
While John may be a Vampire, there's nothing young about him. And Yes he may technically be broody & is a big unit built like a brick sh@#house. But the sexiest thing about John is his mind & the way he uses it!
It's in his thirst for redemption, the protection of the innocent & doing the right thing.
So If you don't like meaningless death, violence and bad guys/girls used as blood bags, or foul-mouthed Supes and If reading/listening to a gifted author & narrator each blessed with a true affinity to entertain, whom both ooze talent from every pore of their souls with a crazy, warped senses of humour and razor-sharp wits to match their alter-egos fangs, then I suggest you go read/listen to something more to your speed or liking, perhaps Twilight or Harry Potter, but if you like your Vamps & Supes Harder, Meaner, Faster, Dirtier, Nastier with True Grit & Determination, more like 'True Blood,' or the book version 'The Sookie Stakehouse Series' appealed to you, then this new series just might be your thang, by an author & narrator with a bit of a twang, for an Alphahole Vampire with fangs!!!
And there's oh so much more waiting for you to discover behind that amazing cover of John walking through the wrought iron fenced gate.
And not only is it a gate, its the gateway that'll lead you to a new adventure... The latest & greatest Odysseus into urban fantast this year!
A Deliverance for your soul!

All Hail King Hunter, & Daneils!
How I bow to thee, and on bended knee, with nose and palms flat to the floor, I want to read & listen, Johning On forevermore!!!
For the 'Man on a Mission' who writes the words for his brother from another. Straight and true from his heart just for you.
John, if only you knew & were here to read how a best friend has honoured you. But then perhaps you do?
And for the Man on a mission who bought you back with his dulcet tones, you no longer live on just in words.
You're now in our hearts, ears, mind & senses as his drawl soothingly drowns us in your soul!
John on is in Him, John On is in Her,
John On is in Me, & now John On is in Infamy!

This book and audio was my Deliverance from a day of pain, misery & sorrow. Turning my frown upside down & dialling back the pain.
Whisked away, transporting me from my 4 walls & sickbed & into John's head, enabled me to play each role.

I was so excited to begin this new series by Hunter Blain,
it was raved about in Shayne Silvers Den of Freaks by the man himself, who brought Hunter Blain in under his own publishing company 'Argento Publishing' as his third latest author.
It's all about signing talent & giving back to new independent authors & mentoring them along with his incredibly successful winning formula! Shayne, you are a Legend, thanks for bringing this stud to your stables.

'DELIVERANCE' is a short story prequel only 52 pages long, but well worth the read. It brings about the origins of two men who'd normally be on opposite sides in the eternal war between Good versus Evil.
In the Right Corner we have John Cook: A 500-year-old Vampire, but one with a big difference, a monster with a conscience and a heart of cold. It's almost like his soul was left intact.
And in the Left (Light) Corner meet Father Thomes Philseeps: The oh so cool, calm and collected 'Holy Man' with an arsenal of weapons including 'Holy Fire' & 'Friends in Very High Places'!

After an initial meeting er Uhm... perhaps I should say battle,
an offer is made. After a second more conductive & amicable meeting, that very odd proposal is sealed in a deal. Secretive plans of affirmative action are put into place to bring about the unlikeliest of partnerships, the creation of a Dynamic Duo the likes of which have never been seen before [of Holy Hell], whilst keeping the details on the down-low. Unconventional times call for unconventional measures, by unconventional men fighting an unconventional war with unconventional opponents.
Their joint union [results in]: 'A Mission for God!' 'The Good Fight for the Light'! An unexpected partnership between Holy & Hellish!

Get ready to experience every emotion known to Man, Monster, Woman, Priest & Beast upon this journey into the Supernatural. Laugh yourself stupid, cry a river of tears all, the while rooting for this monster to find the man within & redeem his soul.
Brought to from the incredibly talented writer who packs a punch, the witty punster with a heart, Hunter Blain & his offsider with the Award Winning Tones of perfection, Mr Luke Daniels timing is everything as this force for good & evil combine in what is set to be the Ultimate Battle to End the Ages!

I have to admit, I don't normally like short stories as I'm always left wanting more, both in content quantity & quality, but this is not one of those. This has to be one of my favourite prequels to a series start, right up there with Shayne Silvers' 'Fairy Tale' or J.R.R Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'.

I RATE DELIVERANCE 5 ⭐ OUT OF 5⭐

This is going to be one Hellova series and I for one, can not wait for the ride & the real fun to begin! JOHN ON!!!

I purchased both e-book & audio & this is my fair, honest & impartial review as always!

I’m actually on book 3 now having started “The Preternatural Chronicles” last week. Ripped thru book 0.5, 1, 2, and halfway thru 3 now… I HAVE to say this series is SOOOOO REFRESHING! Not the same ol, same ol “Twilight” or “Underworld”,( which I LOVE) but our Protagonist in this series is FAR from Edward Cullen LOL,
I mean how many Vampires have you heard Fart on their Cell Phone? Hahahahaha, yep, he farts at someone over the phone! He’s constantly making Movie analogies, like from the Terminator, “I’ll be back”. Just to mention One, he’s FULL of one liners!
Our Vampires name is “John Cook”, having been “Turned” in 1480 by the only other Vampire in the world, Urlik. FF to 1945, Germany WWII, John meets his soon to become Best Friend “Depweg” who is a German. werewolf, and a BIG, Mean Werewolf at that! Together they span the ages to present time, were both are “Anti-Heroes” so to speak, always fighting for the underdogs, defending the weak, and getting their asses kicked a LOT!
John has a lot of weird powers you don’t normally associate with a Vampire, like he can expel His own blood from any part of his body and shape it into any form he needs at the time. Like a HUGE hammer to smash his enemies, or a Broad Sword made of diamond hard Vamp Blood, kinda like the Green Lantern. lol…
If you like a great mix of ALL the Supernaturals and Preternatuals, like Trolls, Faries, Warlocks, Werewolves, Demons, oh it’s got em ALL, then this series is for you!
Thanks for taking the time to read all my drivel!
AWESOME Series!!!

Deliverance, a “Preternatural Chronicles” novella by Hunter Blain, sets the stage for a series that is unique and well written. Even though the book is centered around a vampire, it is written with a fresh view. Thankfully, it is set apart from the overused sexual brush stroke in popular vampire genre today.

The reader is introduced to John Cook, a vampire who must make difficult choices as a result from the brutal murders of his parents. He is given the choice to avenge his parents’ murder or die alongside them. The novella takes us on John’s journey of self-discovery. Along the way, he finds guidance in his new friend, Father Thomas.

Blain provides a great story with intense scenes that are filled with action and blood. Despite the natural appearance of the right of survival, the book is flavored with quirky humor and pop culture references that will make you laugh.

As a fan of urban fantasy and brilliant writing, it is wonderful to discover this rare new talent in the genre. I encourage you to take a step in John’s world.

Interesting prequel. I listened to this on Audible and actually had to restart the book a couple of times. It is a VERY short intro to the series and lays down the basic scenario. I normally like Luke Daniels, but in this case for some reason, he rubbed me the wrong way. I’m trying to figure out if that is why I’m hesitant about moving forward, or if it was from the characters that we just met. I think I’ll read a couple of the summaries and maybe a few reviews. We’ll see.

It peaks your interest. . . .

I was given this book as a gift. It probably took a lot of thought to come up with a good guy vampire. There is a little humor in this novella and I'm not sure if it adds to or detracts from the story. I guess I have to read the next book to see if I like this type of writing. I guess you have made your point by me buying your next book. I have read a lot of Argento authors so welcome to this strange group.

Great book

I read this after I’m glad your dead but it doesn’t matter too much but it is better read before. Really well written and provides the perfect backstory between John and Papa T.

Hunter is a great writer and has really made an impact since joining Argento Publishing cant wait to dig into the next book.

If there was ever a book to choose to be a dedicated reader to.. IMO, it’s this one. If your like me & you miss The Iron Druid Chronicles & Atticus O’Sullivan & Oberon, then grab this series right here. This has a sarcastic & magical hero, a equally as sarcastic sidekick in Da & a whole bunch more. I just finished the prequel so I look very much forward to the rest of the series.

My kind of humour, my kind of hero/main character. The writing style is great and the story, while only a short prequel, set the scene for the series to come and introduces the characters well.

The narrator is excellent, with good tone and pace and fits the story perfectly.

Really looking forward to next book, the first full novel in the series.

This starts out really bad—like someone trying to textually write a comic book. It just does not work...or didn't here. But that faded out by the halfway mark (thank god). The problem is that John is just too much of a Joss Whedon-esque douche-bag to enjoy. Yes, all his assholery is put on, but it all feels like someone trying far too hard to garner a laugh or two.

Not *horrible* and I'll read #1 because I think the series may be worth reading, but...
I do realize the series is called the Preternatural Chronicles, but I do hope he slows down the use of the word "preternatural" very soon. 16 times. In 52 pages. I looked.

I enjoyed it

I enjoy reading about Mr. Cook. He is an interesting character. I like the story, Blain's take on urban fantasy is different than what I have read on the past, different but not do of the wall that the style is lost. Can't wait to see what trouble John gets into next.

An average story with the stereotypical bad guy wanting redemption type storyline. This was short enough to lay some groundwork, so I'm hoping book 1 steps up its game. Time will tell.
