Royally Schooled

Rate this book
They come from two different worlds.
Their love goes against centuries of tradition.
But he doesn’t give a damn.

Maggie

The royal family needs a tutor. Someone they can trust. Someone who isn’t swayed/distracted from their duties by working for royalty.
I’m perfect for the position, since I don’t know the first thing about English royalty.
My father needs money for medical bills, and I’m desperate.
The children are charming, and when I meet their handsome older brother, Prince Edward, my heart skips a beat.
I may be the tutor. but he’s teaching me all too much about falling for the wrong man.
He’s a player, and I need this job so I try to stay away.
Keyword: try.

Edward

I’m expected to make the best match for my country.
But marriage has never interested me. I spend my nights cavorting with beautiful women from the most suitable families, always avoiding any serious entanglements.
When I meet Maggie, she turns my life upside down.
Everything I thought I wanted, everything that’s expected of me—
she makes me want to throw it all away for her.

The fact that she won’t let me near her only makes me desire her even more, and I’m a royal who doesn’t like to follow the rules.

Maggie can finally breathe a little easier, having landed a job tutoring the youngest kids in the Royal Family, she can take care of her dad’s medical bills and spend time with him. What she doesn’t expect is to gin the attention of the kids’ older brother, playboy Prince Edward.

The plot lacked any real energy and the chemistry between the main characters wasn’t really there for me.

It would have been exceedingly better if the author had chosen a distant land rather than London when it came to location, the idea that Maggie had no idea at all that Edward was the heir apparent to the British crown, despite living in Lindon for quite a while just didn’t have an air of realism to it. I’m not a follower of the real British royal family but they get a lot of air time so there’s no way of not knowing how the princes at least look.

An easy, inoffensive read, but after the half way mark didn’t pay a lot of attention to what I was reading, not something I will remember.

Maggie is desperate for a job as she is having to try and pay bills as well as look after her dad as he is sick and now needs a carer when she's not home or available. Having to pull out of school, she will take anything she can get her hands on. So when her friend tells her about a tutor job, she applies. When Maggie arrives at the interview, she is shocked to find out that the role is to tutor the Royal family's children. Maggie believes since she has no idea about the royal family and that she stuffed up her interview, she won't get a callback. Turns out her lack of knowledge was a bonus as Maggie gets the job. She meets the young Prince and Princess and she clicks amazingly well with them. Later she meets the older Prince and he has a reputation as a playboy. Maggie doesn't have time for romance, so rejects him at first but his perseverance is so strong and the attraction and chemistry is visible and she later gives in to her temptation. Not wanting to risk her job and the finances as she is finally getting on top of her bills and her father's medical bills, they decide to keep it on the down-low and behind closed doors. Sadly the castle has ears and eyes everywhere and their secret ends up splashed all over the tabloids. Maggie is heartbroken as she is now all the way back to square one. The Prince realizes that he's finally found his one true love and now he must fight for the one he loves to win her back and have the rest of the royal family accept that he is in love with a commoner. One of my favorite tropes is Royalty fiction and McKenna James kept me interested right from start to finish. I am now looking forward to reading Book #2 Royal Academy for the younger Prince's love story.

Royally Schooled
By: McKenna James

*REVIEW*
3.5 Rounded Up To 4🌟🌟🌟🌟

Royally Schooled is a classic story. Commoner meets royal, but commoner doesn't know who the royal is. They fall for each other. The truth is revealed with minor complications. The happy couple drive off into the sunset, metaphorically speaking. The end.
But, I knew going in exactly what this story was, and I read it regardless of the cliches and predictability. I very much enjoyed it, too. The characters were likeable, entertaining and engaging. Maggie(common) and Edward(royal) made me smile, and that's all I wanted. I rooted for them, and I felt sympathetic toward their situation. Dialogue was snappy and witty. Granted, the technical stuff, narrative structure, syntax, verb tense, etc., could use some tweaking; however, it's not terrible or anything like that (I'm just a nerd). There is heat between the main characters, but it's just enough to keep things sexy without being overdone or ridiculous. While not every aspect is believable, does it have to be? I think a story read purely for a bit of delight requires a certain suspension of disbelief. The plot is well paced, and overall, this is a light fun read. It's not cerebral, but if you're like me, you need a break sometimes from all the literary weight. Give this one a go, and be charmed for a bit by Maggie and Edward.

Maggie and Edward come from different worlds. He's a Prince with the world laid out at his feet. She's a woman who carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. By chance is how they meet. She needs a job. He needs a tutor. What they find could be the undoing of years of tradition or the beginning of a forever kind of love. Royally Schooled feeds the fantasy of the heart. Though a tad cliched, James puts emotions at the center of a larger than life, slightly obvious, hard to resist fairytale and hits her target dead on.

AUDIBLE EDITON!! Narration was terrible!
Maggie has moved herself and her father to London England from America. to get better health care for her father's cancer. PLEASE!! America has the best health care in the entire world. So this didn't make sense.

The other problem I had with this story is the future King of England runs around the city like a normal person. There is no security in place to protect him. The staff in the castle refers to him as Edward!! He even lives in a Penthouse in the city. He unpacks his own luggage. This is so ridiculous and unrealistic for a future King!!

The sex between the couple is absolutely boring.

I know this is fiction but please at least do some research to see how the Royal Family really lives. This story is Ridiculous!!

Mckenna James did a great job on this story, Royally Schooled had a good plot. Maggie and Edward were good characters, they made for each other. Edward has never felt a woman like Maggie before, she made him feels things no one else has.
The attraction was strong between Edward and Maggie, their chemistry was sexy, sweet and sassy. These two were great together. I enjoyed their story.
This was a great story. Thank you, Mckenna James. Great work :)

I loved this Prince/tutor romance with a twist! Maggie and Edward are an unlikely couple, especially since she has no idea who he is at first. This is sweet, soulful, with the right amount of sass and spice to suck you in!

2.5 ⭐️
Review contains spoilers

It was a decent attempt at a quick romance book. American girl moved to England, brings sick dad over to care while he is fighting cancer where healthcare is cheaper. She somehow gets an insider tip from someone in the know of a teaching job. She has little to no info on who she’ll be teaching but ends up getting the job.

I had a hard time believing that she got a job tip about the job teaching royal children but has no idea who the members of the royal family is.

The oldest prince (who will one day be king) decides to change his ways and buck expectations to get the girl. The queen is apparently perfectly fine with this.

Timing is hard to follow but I feel like it was only 2 months or so when he asked her to marry him.

The only mention of media drama is after AG runs her mouth to a “friend” about how upset she was that he paid her dads medical bills and the friend correctly guesses that she is sleeping with the prince.

I feel like if this story was about a prince in some small/unknown county that it would have come across more believable.

Narrator did a good job with the h’s narration. I wish there was a male narrator with a true British accent to narrate the H.

Also there was an odd echo like it was narrated in a tunnel during part of the book.

I had to quit at the end of chapter 4. I wasn't going into this looking for great literature, but I do think that an English prince would use correct grammar. I tried to ignore the 4 or 5 mistakes he made in the first chapters and his misuse of the word extrapolate, but then I came to this passage:
"That was one thing the old coot did enjoy, hearing drab details about my personal life--the various women I courted. He always said he didn't understand how I carried on precariously while bequeathed the heir to the throne without my name being dragged through the mud, but the fact is--the paparazzi would sell any bloody tale that involved a royal and scandalous deeds."
I read that, reread it, read it out loud, and now have typed it out verbatim. I still have no idea what it means. Are the women he dates drab? He has already made it clear that there is no courting going on in any meaning of the word with which I am familiar. We have already heard about Edward's name being dragged through the mud, so this is inaccurate. (I don't even want to discuss the misuse of bequeathed.) The best I can tell, these two sentences contradict themselves at least twice. There is no way I am wading through drivel like this.

This was really a fairy tail read with a bit of drama to it. I loved the story line... girl needs money to help her family, falls for the “bad boy” and really has no interest in his royalty. I love the sweet vs sassy sides of the book. The banter was fun, the pull toward the wild side story line was entertaining. The sexy scenes added steam to the story! Overall just a fun read! Love the HEA!!!

Maggie gets a job as a tutor in the royal family & Edward is the older prince. He asks her out, but she refuses him, which just seems to encourage him more.

There are a few typos here & there in the story which is annoying.

Edward isn’t as likable as her. He’s a bit conceited both in how he behaves as well as how he thinks. Here are a few examples when he first sees seeing her in his room:
-I wasn’t sure I'd seen any woman as beautiful as her in a long time. That was saying something because I was practically surrounded by beautiful women on a daily basis.
-“You are clearly, uh, very experienced with women.”
“I like to think so.”

When we compare that to Maggie, who is caring for her ailing father in all her spare time, it’s a bit too much of a contradiction.
-... plenty of women I’d spent adequate time with whom I enjoyed. At the end of the day, I could take them or leave them. I didn’t feel like I needed to spend any significant time with any of them. (He thinks this about women in general, though not about Maggie...)

So he’s isn’t as likable because he’s conceited and immature. However, she is also somewhat immature.

They end up having a short one night stand, which turns into another (without any protection, or discussion related to this before or after)... He just can’t stay away from her. It’s not quite stalking, but it comes a bit too close to this at times when he does not want to listen to or accept her refusals.

Then he pays off her medical debts without talking to her, & Maggie starts to feel like he paid her for her services...

It’s a story that is predictable, without any realism thrown in. Even at the end, Maggie keeps near her someone who she has trust issues with, which doesn’t ring true at all.

Alright I gave this two stars, but really the rating should be closer to one. This was not good. The premise was ok, but not original. So it wasn’t original and it wasn’t executed well. Oof.
The writing is not good either. The characters are shallow in development.
The two MCs have unprotected sex. Like literally not one sentence about protection or if they’ve been tested, eww. But near the end all of a sudden it’s all “let’s make babies.” Umm, you’ve literally had sex many times without condoms or birth control so that was always a possibility idiots. Let me also mention that the male MC Edward is sexually active with at least two other women before he is with the female MC, Maggie. So hello possible STDs? Gross and not sexy. In my opinion this is irresponsible writing. What if a young adult woman reads this, what kind of message are you sending author?! Protect yourselves ladies, I don’t care your age! Don’t be scared or ashamed to ask questions of testing/history/ or condoms.

This story was boring and tedious. I skimmed the sex scenes and other meaningless details at about 50%, but should have done it sooner. Then the story wraps up real quick

The next story is Drew’s (Edward’s younger brother). And I don’t care. I’m not reading anymore of this series or anything from this author. I can’t torture myself so early in the new year.

Royally Schooled (The Royal Romances #1) was a good read by Mckenna James. The royal family is looking for a tutor they can trust. Maggie knows that she's the perfect person since she knows nothing about English royalty. She needs the money to pay her dad's medical bills. She enjoys the children and her heart skips a beat for their older brother, Prince Edward. She knows they aren't right for each other but she can't help falling for him. I really enjoyed reading Maggie and Edward's story and I can't wait to read more by the author.

No. Just no. Though the premise of the novel is fine, the writing is so poor that the book is painful to read. Beyond the atrocious copy editing, the style is on par with my Intro to Creative Writing students in the worst way. It's all tell and no show, it's overwritten, and everything is choppy. Add stilted dialog, poorly researched material, and supremely unsexy sex scenes, and this book is just crap.

Maggie is struggling under the pressure of mounting hospital bills. Her father has cancer and she spends her time working and caring for him. Then she applies for a job as a tutor, and the children turn out to be the children of the Queen of England. She meets Edward at the interview not realising he is the Prince of England. What a wonderful story. Loved it.

This plot is rather common (commoner get to work for royal, he falls in love, win her over, romance get's leaked, opposition is overturned and they live happily ever after) but it's still an nice and sweet story to read and enjoy. The side characters help a lot in that regard (like the young princes and the rest of the household).
The narration is also good for the theme.

Silly use of England

Simplistic and naive relationship between an American girl and the heir to the throne of England!!! If an imaginary kingdom was used it would be somewhat believable. Clean writing almost to the end when the writer decided to make it spicy (it did not).

Absolutely great read. Maggie is a strong independent woman seeking money to only help her ailing father. She gets a job tutoring the royal young ones. What she didn’t expect was to be sought after by Prince Edward. She brought the best out in him.. True love prevails.

A cute quick read

Maggie and Edward's story was a quick sweet read about love at first sight and when a playboy meets his match.

It had multiple pov and a decent story line, it was enjoyable, but I don't feel compelled to complete the series.
