A forlorn artist rots away in his lonely apartment, longing for a sense of purpose. The only light he finds in his life resides in the eyes of a beautiful young woman he has yet to speak to. His only friend, a talking jackalope mask whose origins he is still uncertain of. The mask offers him encouraging words mired in half-truths and vagaries. As his nightmares and hallucinations become less distinguishable from reality, he begins to hear another voice – one not so kind.
A brilliant exploration of the power of thought over reality. The main character is an artist and creates sketches and paintings that reflect the dissolution of his own reality. The unreliable narrative angle is used to keep the reader unsure of what is real and what imagined. By subverting expectations repeatedly, by the end you can only guess what was and what wasn't.
This is the first book in quite a long time that has broken the cookie cutter mode and brought something completely different to light. Intense, confusing and surreal, I was captivated. I'm not good at writing reviews but this book was truly entertaining. Looking forward to more from this author.
I like the way this book was written. This book capture how the mind comes up alot things. Like when a person has a angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other side telling them whats right. Alot people fight these every day. I really thought the Author capture that very well. I will definitely check this author's other books.
Back in 2019, I received an extremely poorly formatted eARC of this book via Edelweiss. Struggling with the atrocious formatting was frustrating enough, but honestly the writing just doesn't mesh well with me, either. So I'm relegating this to my pile of books I tried and decided against finishing.
It really had me wondering near the !middle of this was all in his mind or was Jack real. I had to keep reading because it seemed like there was more to the story and there really is. It doesn't wrap everything up all nice and with a now but you get relief for the main character and his own sanity. Maybe he can sleep now.
This was a decent book that unfortunately had some technical issues that marred the reading. Punctuation was sometimes dropped or incorrect, much of the descriptive language was overwrought and lacked concision, and dialogue often lacked clarity as to who was speaking. That said, the romance in the book is sweet, and the characters were well written and nuanced. The more fantastical images through the book are well done too, and the emotional tenor of self-centered/destructive rumination was captured perfectly. It was unfortunate that it contained the technical issues, but overall it was a pleasurable read.
