Lavishly illustrated art history volume with hundreds of photography reproductions illustrating artworks and artists creations from the post WWII period. The book is edited by the American Allan Kaprow, and includes groundbreaking in situ artworks and performance art by famous artist like Jasper Johns, Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, Carolee Schneemann, Barry Le Va, Yvonne Rainer, the Fluxus group and many others...
Having taken art courses and being mesmerized by the avant-garde history, I couldn't believe when I found this book at a used store, cast off as an unimportant book. This historical context of this book, let alone the content, makes it one of my upmost treasures! I enjoy reading through the artists I've known about, at their grassroots level.
If you love HAPPENINGS (I do) & have an interest in Assemblage (I do) & love ENVIRONMENTS & know about Kaprow's work then I need say no more. This is a lovingly put together bk of work that was very fresh at the time & work that still thrills me. It's full of fantastic photographs of fantastic events - not just by the people listed in the bk description but many other vital folks as well. There's a picture, eg, of "Rose-Marie Larsson was on the lead end of a 180-foot history-of-the-world-in-rags train. Her marriage to the small auromobile followed." Don't see that everyday.
