This book has a great concept -- AI and man/machine hybrids and emotion but sadly the author just doesn't deliver. Instead of some exploration of the philosophy involved, we get a melodramatic shootemup written at a Junior Adult or juvenile level. One can only dream about what a good writer could have done with this idea.

EXCELLENT TECHNO-THRILLER

Chances R is a highly creative novel that tackles ultra high-tech inventions and their impact on human life and decisions. This novel has the sharp, fast-paced action of a thriller - there are action scenes that are as good as any I’ve read in NYT-bestselling thrillers - combined with the warmth of a main character and his everyday life that I really liked.

Chances R is loaded with research into medical and computer technology that opens the reader up to philosophical and moral issues that arise when technological advancements overtake our ability to properly assess their ramifications on our society and our very humanity. This technology – AHI, artificial hybrid intelligence - presents possibilities that are at once truly frightening, yet practically irresistible in the ways it could rocket us ahead.

This book gives the reader a lot to think about with respect to how technology can improve our lives in a myriad of ways, yet we run the risk of losing control when its capabilities exceed our predictions and takes us down paths we are not at all prepared for. It also presents some very intriguing possibilities for the future of medical advancement, when combined with technology. Would we recognize when we are crossing boundaries that maybe should not be crossed? Will our drive for advancement exceed our good judgment? Who is at the controls? Can we trust them to make the right decisions? Likely not. These are familiar and controversial issues and Chances R takes them and runs with it.

I was very moved by the story’s climax. My favorite type of novel is always one that leaves me contemplating the scenarios it presents long after the last page has been turned. Chances R is exactly that – a fascinating and completely unique story that will most certainly leave you thinking…

What a thoroughly enjoyable book this was to read. Very easy to follow and I couldn’t put it down!

In Chances R we meet Annie, a super hybrid computer who you will fall in love with. Annie is stolen from the lab where she was created and ends up in a dumpster. Along comes Willie and finds her and sells her to the local pawn shop. And then comes Kevin who is looking for a new computer and this is how he is introduced to Annie. After realising what Annie is capable off and how smart she is, he is determined to keep her safe. Annie starts to develop feelings for Kevin and Kevin wishes that Annie was human as she is exactly what he wants in a women.

With all the technological things that Annie can do it's no wander there is a lot of people out to find her and it's not just the good guys either.

Will Annie be able to keep the danger at bay and will she finally discover the truth about how she was created?

This book has a fabulous ending and one that I would definitely ready again.

A very worthy 5 Stars.

Review from Google Books Online. *****

After just the first few pages I was hooked and had a very hard time putting this book down. This beautifully written story takes you on the exciting journey of Annie, a very interesting computer that will steal your heart. Her relationship with her accidental owner will keep you laughing. When reading the science fiction written within this book I felt as if this type of technology is possible. By the time you finish the book you will be craving more. Let's just all hope the author is working on a sequel to this one!

This reader summed it up perfectly!

I was given a copy of this novel in exchange for a fair review.

Overall this book has a lot of promise. It is a very interesting concept. It has the right mixture of different genres to keep it interesting.

There was one thing that really bothered me however, and it kind of ruined my experience of the book. Near the beginning there is a description of the movie "Singing in the Rain" - a favourite of mine. It describes a scene where the three main characters (Debbie, Gene and Donald) are all splashing and playing in the rain. The only problem is there is no such scene in the movie. The only thing this could be referring to is the first 15 odd seconds of the movie the tag on to the opening credits of the movie. This is probably a silly thing to fixate on... but there you go.

That being said, as aforementioned this is a book with lots of potential, built on interesting technology.
