The Fifth Interdictor is a woman stripped down to blades and bloody purpose, given no past, no connections, and no joy except for the brief moments when she stymies an attempt on her charge's life. But something goes wrong with the plan and the Fifth sees the deficiencies in herself and begins to wonder what they mean.

Is her purpose true?

This is a fantastic action-adventure exploration of what it means to understand that you are not quite what you thought you were, and how one woman chooses to face that discovery. She has allies, especially the very human Nils—who she struggles to understand—as well as implacable foes who desire her destruction. The fantasy elements are strong and highly creative, but the Fifth's inner journey is the real star of this show. It's deep and meaningful and the payoff is worth every step of the delightful journey.

Draws you in as pov's awareness folds out

The fifth lives for her purpose, to stop assassin. This isn't just dedication this is a possession, a person who walks amongst the world but doesn't see it or understand it.
A reader knows there is more and with each step The Fifth takes towards awareness you anticipate what mysteries unfold and mourn her poor existence.

Fascinating world painted through narrow eyes then broadening out. The Protag is out viewpoint, but since their experinces are so alien it comes of as a unique dual understanding of the world.

Nice fast and satisfying read.

I finally plucked one of Dunn's books out of my TBR and I'm so glad I did. The Fifth Interdictor is about a woman who lives to serve her ruler, but slowly realizes that her world may not be as cut-and-dried as she thinks. We follow along with the Fifth as she grapples with her own questions, revelations, and physical foes, and we learn alongside her who can be trusted and who can't. The pacing was superb. Dunn has mentioned his extensive outlining, and it was fully apparent to me how much work he put in to it. Each reveal was perfectly timed and at no point did I feel rushed as a reader or overwhelmed by massive amounts of information thrown at me, which is even more impressive since the book is under 200 pages and covers a lot of ground. This book was a perfect introduction to his writing style and I can't wait to jump in to Under Everest and One More Turn next.

I could not put this book down. I devoured it, and I'm usually a slow and steady reader. The Fifth's journey from loyal follower to unwitting betrayer to hero blew me away. I cried when a huge surprise happened (that I can't tell you about because spoilers) and I thought it was all over for her. I need a Nils in my life. Read the book to see what I mean there. Overall, it's an incredibly crafted narrative with a voice so active and alive I swear I know her. You have to read this one.

An amazing story by an amazing author

The Fifth is an amazing story of love, loss, and finding yourself. The Fifth is a beautiful story of adventure and heartbreak, betrayal and loyalty. I enjoyed this novel a lot. I love all of DH Dunn's works, and I enjoyed this one just as much. I loved the characters and the story. I highly recommend any of DH Dunn's novels. They are the best books I've ever read. Powerful. Beautiful. And captivating. 5 stars for a wonderful story told by a wonderful author.
