Listening Length: 2 hours, 44 minutes

When a big movie production comes to Cherringham, complete with lords, ladies, and flashing swords, the whole village is abuzz with excitement. But when a series of dangerous accidents threatens the life of the young lead, Zoe Harding, Sarah and Jack get involved. Are these really accidents? Or could they be something more sinister - even deadly? Who is trying to destroy the career of the beautiful young star - and why?

-- Cherringham is a serial novel à la Charles Dickens, with a new mystery thriller released each month. Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.

-- For fans of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple series, Lilian Jackson Braun's The Cat Who series, Caroline Graham's Midsomer Murders, and the American TV series Murder She Wrote, starring Angela Lansbury.

-- Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), are known for their script work on major computer games. The Cherringham crime series is their first fictional transatlantic collaboration.

Wer will ihr schaden?

An actress in a historical drama is afraid that risky incidents on a film set are deliberate, and the English countryside location is an attractive counterpoint to the modern equipment and personalities on set.

This is a short and at times amusing cosy mystery, which does come across as highly marketing-oriented. The setting and an amateur female sleuth (check) are English (check) in the picturesque Cotswolds for nice covers (check) with a police detective (check) who is retired (check) from the NYPD (check) and now the pair solve murders or other crimes among their friends (check) amid, in this tale, the trappings of a film set (check).

The quality of the writing is not great. Many, many paragraphs begin with It or And. 'It was getting dark. And Sarah had this thought. And Will Goodchild was as well. And here he was. And with the sun rising. And the nurse left the room.' Other sentences are just poorly written. 'An hour later and Sarah felt she knew even less than when she started.' 'And now the director started shouting at the crew in a heavy accent about the lighting.'

The content has also been spread out to make the story appear a 78 page length by providing very many short paragraphs, often consisting of one line, even one word. This does not demonstrate respect for the readers.

Characters come across as one-dimensional to me, but at least there is a good variety of them and we meet some film horses and the crew, not just the stars. I did enjoy the detail of the filming work and the fact that our ex-cop goes undercover to investigate. I may read another in the Cherringham series, which is turning out a novella a month. But if the writing doesn't improve I don't need to keep feeling irritated when there are excellent writers like Ian Rankin, Stephen Booth and Peter Robinson writing British-set crime.

I"ll give it 3 stars because it's a series that I love, but The Final Cut isn't one of the best issues, it was pretty obvious and I couldn't feel the intrigue that usually accompanies my reading.

I’m beginning to understand that the authors have trouble with endings.

Iedere keer als ik een nieuw Cherringhamverhaal zie op Storytel, verschijnt er een glimlach op mijn gezicht, zet ik thee en dompel ik me onder in een uurtje kneuterigheid.

This was a fairly solid entry in the series but wasn’t up to the same level of enjoyment of earlier installments. These books are short and easy reads that are meant to hook you in with well worn characters you grow to love.

The mystery in this one was fairly obvious to me once the villain is introduced. I felt the motivation was fuzzy and didn’t really work and the book just kind of…ends? There was much less wrap up and clear motive in this one, but it does have a fun action sequence in it and we get to see a bit more of Sarah’s kids.

I noticed this installment is the first one to really start indicating Sarah may develop feelings for Jack. Not sure how I feel about that since something I loved about this series is that it didn’t feel like it was trying to be Moonlighting. Sarah makes several comments about how attractive certain men are — including Jack. I’m hoping this will develop in a way where she finally starts dating again after her divorce, but I’m concerned it will develop into a relationship between our two leads.

Nice and light a quick readers delight.

As one of the series, and because nothing is outstanding in this story, here is my book rating as a guide.

I enjoyed this short story. For me, the who-done-it wasn’t apparent from the start, which always makes for an enjoyable read. There may be one character who stands out as the potential baddie, but when another is drawn in, actress Zoe Harding knows she needs help. Enter Jack and Sarah. With a second attempt occurring right under their noses, the freelance investigative team snaps into action culminating in a chase scene, invoking memories of famous big-screen pursuits, where Jack and Sarah quickly save not only the day but the life of a leading lady.

Cherringham is full to the brim with the cast and crew of a spectacular historical drama film. The filming itself isn't going well as a series of accidents to the female lead are affecting the schedule, causing frayed tempers and frustration. Jack and Sarah are asked to look into the matter and discover that the accidents aren't necessarily accidents and the life of their new friend Zoe is in danger. They pool their resources to get to the bottom of this before someone gets killed.

Judging by my fellow listener's reaction to the ending of this episode in the Cherringham series, I might have "done my dash" here for a while. While the plot was fine, the motives behind the series of accidents threatening Zoe Harding were a bit far-fetched, and in the long run, the ending was a disappointing and a bit lame.

The stories are beginning to remind me too much of Midsomer coincidences.

I'd been a little disappointed in the last few Cherringham books (novellas?) even giving one just 2 stars, so hadn't been listening Cherringham audiobooks while doing chores. I'd switched to news podcasts. All the news was such a bummer that I figured Cherringham had to be better. And it was. This book followed the usual formula, but is there a hint of romance now????

A good book to listen too when you clean the house. It gives you ”Midsomer murders” wibes. It is fun to try to figure out how the guilty person is. Jack is a retired cop from US, Sarah is a singel mom and they solves crime together. This one was about a mystery.

A Time for Action

Sarah and Jack solve another mystery and this time at the very last second. This is a book for all ages to enjoy. Also this book may hint at a bit of romance.

Easy Reading

Sometimes after reading best sellers and Historical Fiction, I try to find some easy reading. I have been enjoying the Cherringham series. Just finished number 17.
