The Charismatic movement is experiencing growth worldwide. Heralded by many as the future of Christianity, it has spread through all the major Christian denominations. This book examines the origins of Charismatics, charts their rise in the UK, and examines trends within the movement.
I found this a throroughly enthralling analysis of the Charismatic movement within Christianity.
It would be easy to do an outright scandal-centred hatchet-job; while there are certainly scandals recounted in this book - some of which, frankly, made my jaw drop - it's a more thoughtful book than that, examining the origins and growth of the movement and acknowledging the positives where they are to be found.
Or, perhaps, where they were to be found; Howard's conclusion is that the Charismatic movement has become an almost entirely negative force within the Church if viewed by the traditional Christian ethos.
It proved a more thought-provoking read than I had anticipated, causing me to think long and hard not just about the growth of this strain of Christianity and its effect upon the religion in which I was raised, but also about its parallels with New-Age philosophies and the way that the Charismatic movement may have, in its turn, influenced new cults and creeds which can be seen as off-shoots of traditional Christian churches.
The only problem I had with this book is that it was published in 1997 and I can't help wondering what has happened since that time!
