Reunited with his family after a short separation, Special Agent Jack Miller is on vacation with his family in Minnesota's lake country. He's quickly pulled into a partnership with a small-town police chief as she battles the local crime family and a growing drug problem.
A well written and developed story. It was full of humor, suspense, excitement, and fun. It covered all the emotions perfectly! It was a story that keeps you thinking and this one certainly did.
A “Who can your trust?” tale of FBI, drug dealers, and hidden gold
This is a fairly straight-forward story where a vacationing FBI agent gets pulled into an investigation of a small town where the “leading family” has a drug operation going on, using public events in the town to launder their profits. But I liked the characters, especially the agent’s children. There was decent suspense. What argued in favour of four stars instead of three was the fact that I wanted to continue to read more by Dorow. I had already read and posted a review for The Ninth District. I already have copies of the first two “Critical Incident series, and pre-ordered the third.
I thought I’d read a book by Douglas Dorow previously (at least it sounded familiar) when I picked this on up…Sure enough I had. I read “The Ninth District” by Dorow way back in June of 2020 (about 5 months into the COVID Pandemic). Well, I must have enjoyed it because I gave it 4 stars. So, back to this one….an easy to read novel, no major complications, just a good mystery with a solid character base (Jack, Julie, their kids. A town Chief of Police, a good guy, and the bad guys). Drugs, money laundering, and gold are the basic premise of this story. Well written, with a solid story line, and a good ending. I encourage you to pick it up and enjoy!!!!!
A vacation is supposed to get you away from what you do for a living... isn't it?
Upfront: There is violence and adult language plus mention of drug use.
When reading this second book of the series, FBI Special Agent Jack Miller wants to get away from it all with his family. The first day there, a series of events makes it impossible for him to say no when the local police chief asks for his help.
I applaud Jack for saying he was on vacation yet knowing that he couldn't resist the pull of the mystery. Seems the rest of his family might just love mysteries as much as he does. Great job Mr. Dorow on showing another side of the main characters.
This story was so neat to read, the life and times of a family who had experienced some tough times and who gets to go on vacation to reunite and redevelop familial bonds. But as is often the case for any law enforcement officer, are you ever really on vacation? FBI Agent Jack Miller takes the fam to one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes for two weeks he gets more than he bargained for! But do you help and leave your family to flounder or do the right thing and worry-was it really the right thing? You know the answer but the action will get you going. A great read.
This is the second book in the FBI Thriller series and it was very well written with very few typos. The book started out strong and kept you engaged throughout the book. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery novel.
After receiving a long-awaited vacation a protagonist and his family thoroughly enjoy themselves. Until they meet an old codger with problems and a mystery to solve
I just read it straight through in a marathon session! The promise of a simple relaxing family vacation up north by one of Minnesota's 10,000 (plus) lakes, in the last weeks of summer before back to school, turns into something decidedly unexpected, involving the whole family! Mysteries galore!
The characters of this story were completely believable, as was the plot. I got completely. wrapped up in the story of the family on a "quiet" vacation that turned into an exciting adventure and a successful drug bust.
Jack is at it again only this time he and the family are supposed to be on vacation. Well things happen for a reason and his vacation was more of a mystery plus work. Great series I am really enjoying it.
An enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours or so with a novel like this. Jack Miller, FBI, takes his family away for a vacation. This turns into a working holiday when Jack intervenes in a fight between 2 men. Drugs and gold are at the root of this tale along with a crooked family. Good fun.
I loved the story from beginning to end. It wasn't a deep thriller, but had all of the right elements to keep.It interesting. I definitely enjoyed this book.
An excellent mystery with a strong story line and good characters to go with it. This well developed novel all came together with several small mysteries branching from the main action. It all pulled together for one heck of a book
Captures you with the story at the beginning, hooks you quickly with believable characters. Moves quickly, heart warming characters. A good family story. Don’t miss this one.
