Eagles of Rome #3.5

Eagles in the Wilderness SHORT story (Eagles of Rome series): A Tullus 'long' short story

Rate this book
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SHORT STORY, NOT A FULL LENGTH NOVEL.

ABOUT THE SHORT STORY’S PRICE: Hello, you lovely people. Odd to talk about money straight up, but I know that some of you might be thinking, £1.99 is a lot for a short story. Let me explain how it works. A rate of 20% VAT (Value Added Tax) applies to eBooks in the UK. This doesn’t apply to ‘real’ paper books. That means 33p of the £1.99 goes straight to the British government. Amazon takes around 2p to deliver the story to your Kindle, then takes another 48p as its cut. The remainder, £1.16, goes to me. That's not a great deal, I hope you agree.

In these times of falling sales, and authors losing their contracts, and only one in seven traditionally published authors being able to write fulltime, stories like this are a vital way of YOU supporting the authors whose books you enjoy. So THANK YOU for your support!

Think of it in terms of a pint of beer or a cup of coffee: they cost £2-4, depending on where you live. This story will give you more enjoyment (I think!) than either of those things, and last for a longer time, and cost you less money.

This is only the second time I have self-published a short story. (Massive thanks here to Pete Simpson, who designed the cover for me!) It’s been an exciting project since the day I did the poll on Facebook, asking you lovely people which of my characters you wanted me to write about. Centurion Tullus won out, narrowly, and this is the result. The one hundred and something people who backed the Kickstarter campaign got to read this story almost 7 months ago, but now you can too.

Enjoy the story, and please email me if you have any questions about it or anything else – ben@benkane.net

7,5/10

Probably more 3.5 stars rounded down to three.

This novella takes place circa 19 AD. The timeline is around 3-4 years after the ending events in Eagles in the Storm. Tullus is now a retired veteran; he has settled within the settlement by the fort of Vetera in the German frontier. Tullus wouldn't be Tullus without some sort of a fight, so he accepts a quasi-military guard assignment well-across the Rhine.

Good story. Not stellar, but good and solid. All things considered, I am glad that I've added it to my library.

Short stories are kinda tough. You don’t have enough time to really develop any major character evolutions or establish important adventures. I think it’s the perfect format for grand ideas stories, science fiction and the like, but not much else.

Probably for that reason, this is a long short story (a novella). Unlike Kane’s other shorts, this one gives us a look at a full war and a new setting: Pannonia during the revolt. We’re given enough time to get to know some of Tullus’ new recruits and get a feel for the campaigning, but not much else. The book uses its limited space well though, and we get one thrilling battle in there that’s entirely unlike anything we’ve seen before, as well as a revenge plot. I don’t know that there’s anything much more that could be stuffed in. I enjoyed it. It was a pleasant hour’s read.

A treat from Ben Kane, a short(ish) story featuring one of his most popular characters, Tullus.
Tullus is, er, “enjoying” retirement and the joys of cheese buying. Given an opportunity to earn some money and have a little adventure, he jumps at the chance. Off to lead the guards in a distant purchase of Amber, he has to endure a sea voyage and an encounter with old enemies.
As you would expect this is a fun story with pace, action and characterisation.

Whatever you want to call it; short story, novella, or a grand extended snippet, the author has created an enjoyable tale. In a scenario where "you can take the man out of The Legion, but you can't take The Legion out of the man", a former centurion and his mates join together in a business venture that reacquaints them with the rigors and dangers of soldiering. An interesting mix of characters, action that pulls the reader in, and a story line of a time and place not usually written about makes Eagles in the Wilderness a solid 4 star page turner. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A long short story! This was very enjoyable for what it was, be warned though! This isn't book 2.5 as goodreads says it is! It's set after book 3 and if you read it you'll spoil some of book 3 like I did! I had to stop and come back to it after.

A good story about Tullus and Fenestela after the German campaign getting caught up in a trip to but amber from tribes in the east.

Good fight scenes and a very good story for such a short book, I enjoyed it!

Another very enjoyable read starring Tullus

Really enjoy reading the stories with Tullus. This one deals with Tullus as a retiree being engaged as a mercenary. Short but action-packed with new characters. Excellent

Se siente bien tener la oportunidad de leer una aventura más del Centurión Romano Tulio, después de dejar la legión en la que sirvió por treinta años. Está aventura lo lleva a tierras lejanas y desconocidas para él, pero aún así su pasado lo persigue. Oh, Fortuna.

Mr Kane Never disappoints !!!

As an avid reader of historical fiction, it wasn't a difficult decision downloading this short story. Have followed Tullus on many a journey so it was great to get the opportunity to spend a few more hours with him and Fenestela. It's also good that I'm not the only one getting a bit older !!!! Nice touch the way the 5th still hold such regard for Tullus even after his departure from the Legions. Great read, thoroughly enjoyed it, looking forward to sitting under a sunbed tomorrow and reading "the March" !!!!

Rip roaring.

A cracking short story about a now retired Tullus. I'm truly envious of the guys that are included in the story but, I also congratulate them for supporting the cause. Shame they had to die lol. Definite 5 🌟 from me. Hopefully this isn't the last we hear from Tullus.

Brilliant, totally gripping tale, would have loved a full book.

Ben Kane has produced great excellent short story, filled with the usual blood and snot, I think that it would have made a brilliant new novel. Still great all the same.

Goodmreadingnshortmstory

Since this has the main character from the authors Eagles, series it really is not meant as a stand alone. It takes place after his service to the Legion is over. Nice read for a rainy afternoon.
