Forgetting Chuck Taylor

Rate this book
As one of Raleigh's hottest young entrepreneurs, Eva Perry spends her days planning lavish events and helping affluent brides-to-be plan their dream weddings. She keeps her margins, her reviews, and her designer stilettos high. Unfortunately, her success has come with sacrifice. When it's time to close her office door for the day and head upstairs to her apartment, the only romance she has energy for is in the books she reads from the local public library.

When she pictures the person she'll end up with, it's always the same: a goateed book nerd in flannel and Converse sneakers, carrying around a beaten up copy of her favorite novel in his messenger bag. When Eva meets Taylor on the library's web chat and gets invited to an off-site book club after they exchange witty banter, she quickly gets caught up in daydreams where she walks into the meeting to find the living embodiment of her dream guy.

Instead, she finds a gorgeous brunette that shares all of the more important qualities Eva hasn't managed to find in anyone else. In the weeks that follow, Eva finds that it's not Taylor's gender, but her past, that proves to be the biggest surprise. Can Eva maintain her reputation among the southern elite while courting someone with a criminal record?

A quick read with a HEA. A wedding planner, Eva, goes to a book club to meet Taylor who she envisions as tall, dark, and handsome. Eva meets Taylor alright, only Taylor is a she and is tall, pale, and gorgeous. Initially disappointed, Eva soon finds she is attracted to a women for the first time - surprise!

I was given an ebook copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I've been very into F/F romances lately and this one looked absolutely adorable. There's a lot of mileage in the premise and the queer aspects were handled incredibly well. It's rare to find a queer romance where bigotry or anti-queer sentiments aren't a major factor of conflict. In this story, they're a non-issue, which was a breath of fresh air.

The dialogue, which is an aspect that I'm usually picky about, was well done as well. I could imagine the exact way everyone was speaking the words. It was all very natural, which also seems to be a rare thing in romances.

My biggest struggle with it, however, was an aloof writing style. Every book has those paragraphs that begin with something like "Over the next few weeks..." wherein general action is described for the sake of moving the plot forward. There were gigantic portions of this book that had that same tone, like it was a general overview rather than in the moment. The aspect where it was the most obvious was when Taylor and Eva decided to write out "vows" as promises they're making to each other in their relationship. Then the narrative gives an overview of the themes discussed in the vows. In that moment, I would have much rather read the exact lines they came up with. In certain parts, it almost feels like she was writing out the vague outline of a first draft that she meant to come back and elaborate on later, but never did.

The author mentioned that she is a straight woman herself, but a very big ally. This book was written for queer friends that were stuck with mostly tragic or dramatic queer stories. While I commend Bailey Peters for the support, I theorize that this probably has a lot to do with why the writing style had a kind of removed feeling.

In general, I would suggest this book either for someone that loves your usual kitschy romances (but queer) or someone that needs a palate cleanser from other dark, tense books. It may be standard fare, but it's a quick, simple, and worth the time.

well, the reviews saying this was a frustrating read were right. i had expected the frustrating part about this book to be a tired coming out plot or a contrived conflict with the felon back story, but neither dragged as much as the impending sense of doom for the two main characters that never goes away.

there's no nuanced resolution to the wealth imbalance between the two mains. eva does one shitty thing after another to taylor and performs apology rather than address the issues meaningfully. she ends the book off having done even more shitty things that she hopes her partner will never find out about and would obviously work to conceal from her.

having said all that, the author is real good at building up all the challenges for the two main characters. the struggle is in sufficiently breaking them back down to make you want them to end up together by the end. it's unsatisfying to know that there are literary loose ends like illicit racy photos not quite in the context of cheating but close enough that will "never" be discovered because your partner doesn't have instagram, or a pros/cons list to justify said not-cheating-but-still-iffy situation that "should" be destroyed.

honestly, it all just feels a little too much like real life. it feels like you're reading the ill advised roller coaster that one of your friends embarks on, wherein someone doesn't emotionally grow and hurts the other person over and over and you just have to sit there and wonder when the shit will finally hit the fan and break them up for their own sakes. whatever happy ending it seems there is, is really just one of many peaks before another inevitable crash down. i like my cheesy queer romance novels to lift me out of my cynicism, not reinforce a feeling of dread. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It takes a lot to make me hate an MC in a lesfic romcom: it was achieved in this book.

Eva doesn't deserve Taylor. No matter how you try to justify the way she hurts Taylor multiple times and lets her down, it's doesn't work for me. The way she got over her in 5 minutes and set a pro and con list AFTER writing a letter to Taylor saying she wants to explore the world with her? That conviction just disappeared in a few days? Make it make sense...
Worse when Taylor blames herself for Eva's mistakes and Eva kind of just agrees? No ma'am. That's not a healthy relationship. Bye.

Nice

This was a sweet story about meeting your soulmate when you least expect it. Life always has hurdles and sometimes missteps but what matters is how you deal with them. Good book!

Great first novel

What an intriguing set of circumstances these two main characters are placed in. I feel for them for the mistakes they make, and I am in awe of them for the ways they handle them as become stronger.

And the way people come out of the woodwork stating they had the same issue of the one woman. I think that happens a lot more often than we realize.

A sweet story in a difficult situation

Sweet story of some lovely women dealing with the repercussions to both of their lives due to the previous poor choices of one of them. I would rate it PG but for the subject matter and not that of lesbianism.
