To be clear, the only reason I read this book in the first place is because my soon-to-be-wife is soon-to-be a professional geographer (or a PhD student but of course doing geography research, hopefully sponsored) and I wanted to make sure I at least had the basics of her profession down. ;) Oh I know how to read maps (though not everyone does apparently). And like a lot of the things in this book, I 'knew' somewhere in the back of my head or guessed or just never thought about the reason for wind, the seasons, the actual mechanics of building up and tearing down mountains, rivers, etc.

But the book (written by one of my wife's professors at Hunter!) gently leads one through everything I knew or thought I knew and made it all concrete. The book does an overview on all the sub-domains of geography: physical, economical, environmental, cultural. And that's really what geography is: the general study of the planet from a spatial perspective. So although I'm no dummy I greatly appreciated the grounding in basic geography it gave me, and I'd recommend it to anyone even mildly interested in the planet we live on.

Geography for Dummies provides a brief overview of the geography you should have learned in middle-school. Topics covered in the book include Mapwork; Physical Geography (e.g. volcanoes, earthquakes, climate, etc); Population Geography (movement and distribution of people); and Economic Geography (resources, economic activities, urban geography, environmental issues, etc). The book also provides many diagrams and lists of organizations for geographic information (useless unless you live in the USA), geographical occupations, geographical websites, and a chapter on oddball topics like the Bermuda Triangle or how "Democratic Republics" are usually anything but democratic.

This book provides a basic, superficial outline of the listed topics, using simple words, a chatty writing style and many examples (most of them from the USA) - I suppose this is what one should expect from a book subtitled "for Dummies". Personally I found the chattiness rather long-winded and the simplistic explanations annoying (I wanted more information!).

In short, an informative, albeit basic, book if you know nothing about geography, rather superficial if you want something more detailed.

It was a pretty easy read, and when it got into the physical aspects of geography I got really interested. Something clicked in my brain when it talked about the motion of ocean currents and their rotation per hemisphere and how that affects climate and deserts which makes the world all make a little more sense. It got more boring towards the end with population and economic stuff, but I can see why they are important to the topic.
