Susan Kietzman grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. She went to Connecticut College, where her mother, aunt, and grandmother went before her. After graduation, she worked in Manhattan just long enough to realize that she feels more at home in the country than in the city. This conviction did not prevent her from going to journalism school at Boston University. Kietzman next moved
to Mystic, CT, where she worked at a weekly and then a daily newspaper. Along the way, she met and married Ted and had three sons.

The family spent time in Aurora, Ontario, and then moved Midland, Michigan, where Kietzman wrote fiction in the early morning, taught English composition at a community college, and worked for various public relations firms, creating content for corporate clients. When the family moved back to Connecticut, she continued teaching community college students and started writing grants for Mystic Seaport. She has since left the classroom and the Museum and is focusing all her writing time on fiction.

She spends her free time enjoying the outdoors – walking, hiking, biking – and reading good writing.

3.5 It’s Complicated Stars 🌟🌟🌟.5

Grace sure had a complicated life... at 42 she was divorced and fully engrossed in her job, having just received a promotion.... after one night of fun with Bradley( younger coworker) Grace finds herself pregnant... having never wanted children, what is she to do now? Add in her mom‘s negative thoughts towards motherhood and Bradley’s overly involved parents, and you really have quite the mess!

Grace was in a tough spot, absolutely... however I found her character a little hard to connect with... Bradley, despite the fact he was 30, he really was very immature.... why his parents had such a big part in what was going on was beyond me.... i’m sure once my kids are 30 I will still want to offer advice, but I can’t imagine it will go much beyond that... not to mention that Grace was a mature 42-year-old that pretty much had everything together, with this exception....

This was a decent enough story, it just never completely captivated me... I did appreciate Grace’s character development and choices throughout the book....

*** thank you to the publisher and Net Galley four my copy of this book ***

It Started in June is a novel about Grace who is an “older” woman that falls for a “younger” man at work. Then she gets pregnant. She never wanted kids so it was a shock to all of her family, even her ex-husband. I had a really tough time following this story. I was easily confused and i just could not connect to any of them. I thought i could keep going but i just couldn’t. DNF at 49%. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this complimentary book. All opinions expressed are my own.

It Started in June is a very pleasant, quick read book about relationships and their influences on each other and on others outside the immediate circle. Bradley and Grace are the two main characters. Grace, 12 years Bradley’s senior, gets pregnant on a quick one-night fling after working late with him. After that night, they decide to continue and build their relationship, as Bradley has long had an interest in Grace, and this process is going well until Grace finds out she is pregnant from that quick first encounter.

Enter those who would influence Grace and Bradley’s relationship and even their decision to continue with the pregnancy. Grace comes from a somewhat dysfunctional family and a former broken marriage. She has not kept ties with her estranged mother nor her ex-husband, with whom she adamantly refused to have children. Bradley’s parents, in my opinion, are the most likeable characters in the book. Bradley’s friends are the most immature characters, just as he is. And the worst of them is the young co-worker, Rachel, who openly goes after Bradley.

Two things bothered me about the characters. Bradley is 30 years old and very good at his job. 30 years old is too old to be as immature as he is. 30 years old is far from being too young to have a child and commit to the relationship.
I was also uncomfortable about the ease with which friends and family thought Grace should have an abortion. As soon as you know a new life is growing inside of you, it is not easy to cavalierly say that that life should be terminated. This is not for anyone else to decide. Good for Grace for sticking to her guns.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and the setting, being somewhat familiar with the location myself. I envy Grace her beach house!

I thank NetGalley, Kensington Books, and the author for allowing me to be an early reader.

Good up until the last 25% of the book - then its rushed, has a major plot line error, and the ending is pretty weak...

This was a different read for me. The blurb sounded interesting, hence I wanted to read this. Grace at 42 years, after a night of intimacy finds herself pregnant. Grace had never wanted to have children and her friends advice her to have an abortion. Bradley her partner at 30 years was too immature, for me, in this book. Though both of them stick to the relationship and give it a go, it just felt superficial for me.
I wanted both the characters to grow to develop into fabulous parents, and to show relationships can happen at any age. I wanted deeper emotions.
To some extent I liked both the characters, but I wanted something more from this book.

I thought this book would be another romance, but it was different. Grace and Bradley work together, hook up quickly and she becomes pregnant. She is 12 years his senior.

There isn’t just the story of Grace, Bradley and their new baby Hope. The book discussed family interactions or lack of, career goals and work romances, parenting across the generations, unplanned pregnancies, friendship and how a romance affects one's social life along with the dealings of a couple who have a lot going on between them.

There were times when I really disliked Grace and her behavior and then I disliked Bradley and his behavior. In their own way they had to grow up and decide which path of life was best for the situation they found themselves in.

It Started in June by Susan Kietzman
Starts out with Grace and she's now divorced, 42 and just wants to concentrate on her new position that Paul had given her a new position with the company, a senior VP.
She is used to hard work and gets it done right the first time.
Also follows Bradley who has found Grace on the social media sites so he knows she's single. He will be under her command as they work on the latest assignment, the maritime museum campaign.
At drinks after working late she relaxes and smiles to the things he's saying and they end up in the back seat of a car later.... the boss doesn't condone office romance nor does Grace....
She confides in her girl friend ...she's his supervisor and the condom had broken...
We also learn of her birth and her mothers dating in high school...
Grace knows she has to mend fences with her mother and with the soon to be mother in law she discussed the choices.
Bradley discusses the plans with his parents and they feel they should have a say into what happens and they are both doctors: a pediatrician and a phycharist.
I feel he's 30 he should be able to make up his own mind about the situation.
They combine households as it'll be easier to take care of the baby together and give it a rial run before the event.
Tiring parents and one makes a slight error and they part and you wonder if they will repair the damage done...

I received an advanced copy of this book through netgalley, so was able to download to my kindle. As I often do, I decided I would read one chapter, to get a feel for it, only one because I had another book I thought I would read first. Usually, in the first chapter, I know whether it is going to be an easy read that flows well, or a more difficult one. I enjoyed the first chapter, so one turned into 2, then more, and I couldn't put it down. I read more than half of it the first day, then secretly read the rest during down time at work, it was a particularly quiet day.
The main characters are Grace, who had a very difficult upbringing, but managed to become successful in life by the age of 42. Bradley, her co-worker who had just turned 30, her best friend Shannon, and Bradley's parents Bruce and Dorrie, and assorted other characters. I don't like to give away too much in a review, so just want to say that if you like women's fiction, you will love this. I
f you have the right kind of book club, there are so many things to discuss in this book. The choices that everyone makes, how they change, who influences who, so many things.

Bradley likes his colleague Grace and can't believe his luck when they go out for a drink after work one day and end up on the backseat of Grace's car. This encounter leads to a shocking discovery, Grace is pregnant. She's forty-two years old and is twelve years older than Bradley. Should Grace keep the baby? Are they ready to have a child and do they want to become a family while they've only just started dating?

Grace has always struggled emotionally because she wasn't wanted at home. She was the result of a teenage pregnancy and both her mother and grandparents were unhappy with her existence and let her feel this on a daily basis. It was the sole reason Grace never wanted to have kids, but now that she's pregnant she's changed her mind. She has plenty of love to give and her child won't grow up in a loveless household. Grace is determined to become a good mother. However, where does Bradley fit into her plans? Is he ready for such a big commitment and will their relationship survive unexpected parenthood?

It Started in June is a fascinating moving story. Grace is a strong and capable woman and she has a clear plan for the future. She never intented to become a mother, but being pregnant changes her and makes her softer. I loved seeing that transformation. Susan Kietzman explores each emotional consequence of the process in such a great detailed way that it felt natural and fabulous to follow Grace's thoughts and feelings. Grace is ready to have a baby, but the same can't be said about Bradley. He's an immature thirty-year-old. He still discusses everything with his parents, he doesn't know how to decide anything on his own, he isn't good at introspection and he can't keep up with the changes a baby will bring to his life. He's a sweet guy, but is having problems adjusting and that means trouble, a lot of it. Finding out if he'd be able to catch up kept me glued to the pages. It was incredibly interesting to see what Bradley would do and if he'd grow up eventually.

Susan Kietzman has a wonderful descriptive writing style. I love the originality of her story. It's real and honest, which fits the subject matter very well. Susan Kietzman doesn't spare her main characters, she explores their flaws and she thoroughly analyzes their feelings. The result is a well balanced and complete story. I really loved It Started in June, it's a terrific captivating story with many surprising twists and turns.

Wallbanger! That is what I call a book that I throw at the wall! Cause it makes me mad that I bought it! I hate a book that has a woman who is older & should know better, sleep with a man on a first date. I tried for a couple of chapters & then BAM! Out it went. TSTL is an old acronym from Romantic Times site & it suits this. (Too Stupid To Live)

I didn't finish this book. I don't care if you are pro-life or pro-choice - anyone telling someone else who has decided to have a baby that they think she should have an abortion is really messed up. This went on for multiple chapters. Any person should be livid at someone interfering in their life this way and the woman in this book was just tolerant and understanding. I couldn't take it. I guess I just don't live in the upper class world where a beloved golden son's scripted life of privilege would be ruined by a woman he impregnated actually having a baby. Yuck yuck yuck.

On the surface Grace looks to have it all. She’s cool, confident and extremely professional in the work place. She’s not someone who makes friends easily because of her kind of cool demeanor and because of that leads a rather lonely life, but it’s a life she is very satisfied with. Bradley is a young attractive co-worker at the advertising agency where Grace works. They get paired on an account together and really hit it off. He sees beneath her cool demeanor and likes what he sees. Grace is flattered at the attention from this young, good looking man and at an after works celebration they drink a bit too much and “celebrate” in the back of her car. A few weeks later Grace realizes she is pregnant and decides she wants to keep the baby.

This novel is about how Grace and Bradley, two people who are at different places in their lives, try to find common ground and balance in order to be parents to the child they have created. I found it very easy to relate to Grace because I, too, work in the advertising world. I understood the emotions they went through after having a great meeting and closing the account. I’m also childless by choice, although now a bit older than Grace’s forty-two, I certainly remember my own choices about ‘to be or not to be’ a mother. Bradley’s character was a little harder for me to grasp. I met my own husband when he was twenty-nine and I was five years older. Bradley is thirty in this novel and seemed so much younger than I remembered my own experiences with my husband at almost that same age. Of course, different childhoods and experiences create different people, but I found myself having very little patience for Bradley’s hesitations and “backseat” shenanigans. I will admit that I am drawing on my own life experiences in my opinion of Bradley, but most readers would and other readers also may not have those same feelings I did.

While reading It Started in June, I was not completely certain with how this book would end. Grace was so self assured even though motherhood would be a completely new event and as a child she didn’t have a great role model in her own mother. I do think that a lot of women would identify with her character and what she went through in this book. They would root for her to celebrate in her pending motherhood, regardless if Bradley were to join her on that journey or not. You’ll have to read the book to find out whether the two of them resolved their pending parenthood because I don’t want to give away the conflict and resolution, but I will say that while reading about these two characters it did make me reflect upon my own life’s journey which is a compliment to the author for really making me think. ❤❤❤❤

I liked this book okay. The writing was clear and the characters well developed. I think the story line itself was what I found not as interesting.

There was a lot of emotional upheaval, positive and negative family relationships, and life-changing decisions that filled up the pages in this book. There were times I would gasp out loud and other times that I would find myself on the edge of tears.

Rachel was a manipulative, irritating, arrogant, self-absorbed, family destroying female. And while Bradley's life suddenly changed based on one rash decision, he was hesitant to be committed to the situation in which he found himself. He needed to grow up and take responsibility for his actions.

Grace was a much more mature and put-together woman. But she had her own emotional baggage she was dealing with...which she does attempt to do. Grace's maturity allows her to not be intimidated by others. And even though she holds Bradley's feet to the fire, she comes to grips with her true feelings and reaches out to others to get advice and feedback.

While this wasn't one of my favorite books, the author does a good job with her writing style and the character development. Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Okay, so this one is nothing less than confusing and irritating for me. It gets 3 stars because it is well written, although written much too "properly" for me. The story is about a 42 year old woman who ends up pregnant after a fling with a 30 year old coworker and she grapples with whether or not to keep the baby, her relationship with the coworker and also with friends and family. The characters are well developed so I became invested in the story, but kept getting angry because in the real world, no one would be constantly telling a 42 year old successful woman that she should get an abortion or that she shouldn't have had her baby, or that her relationship is doomed to fail with no basis for it other than age. It is completely unrealistic. Also, on what planet is 30 too young to settle down, or be a father? I kept getting the feeling that this book was written by a much, much older woman that has come out of touch with reality. This was especially apparent when reading the parts that were from the perspective of the 30 year old father, or when the other characters were referring to him.

4.5 stars.

It Started in June by Susan Kietzman is an engaging (but sometimes frustrating) novel about a surprise relationship and an even more unexpected decision about an unintended pregnancy.

Grace Trumbull is a forty-two year old vice president at a media company, divorced and childless by choice. She and thirty-year old Bradley Hanover are assigned to work together and a night of drinking leads to a very steamy encounter in the backseat of her vintage car. They decide to continue seeing one another outside of work and their fledgling relationship is rocked when Grace discovers she is pregnant. Even more shocking is her decision to have the baby but she leaves it is up to Bradley to decide what role, if any, he will have in his baby's life.  Grace is surprised by his decision to stand by her and be an active participant in raising their child, but will their relationship survive such an inauspicious beginning?

Grace's childhood was sadly lacking in love, encouragement or support yet she has managed to make a good life for herself.  She is extremely intelligent and dedicated to her job but in her personal life, she closely guards her heart.   Her difficult upbringing is the main reason Grace does not want children and in fact, her lack of desire for kids lead to her divorce years earlier.  However, she quickly discovers that a decision in the abstract is very different than when facing in reality. No one is more shocked than Grace when she decides to have the baby, but is she making this decision for the right reasons?

Bradley is a fun-loving man who is quickly moving up the career ladder. He is done with indiscriminate dating and one of the things he enjoys most about Grace is her lack of pretense and  her confidence. Bradley  is happy with their burgeoning relationship but he is definitely thrown by the pregnancy. His kneejerk reaction is to walk away, but he ultimately decides to stand by Grace and their unborn child. Unfortunately, Bradley is immature and he does not exactly handle his new reality with the same aplomb as Grace. He makes some very stupid decisions that could ultimately destroy what he is building with his new family.

The secondary cast of characters includes Bradley's parents, Dorrie and Bruce, Grace's best friend Shannon Greene and Bradley's close friend, Kevin Bell.  Their collective reaction to Grace's pregnancy is the pretty much the same and their lack of support is appalling. Not one single person is happy about the impending birth and they actively try to dissuade the couple from going through with their plans. It is impossible not to feel a great deal of empathy for Grace as she endures such negativity from the people whom she should have been able to count on for encouragement and help. This part of the storyline is a disappointment due to the continued lack of respect for Grace and Bradley's decision.

Despite a few minor irritations and a bit of predictability where Bradley is concerned, It Started in June is a captivating novel. Grace is a wonderful lead protagonist who undergoes realistic growth as she embraces motherhood and attempts to reconcile with her estranged mother. Bradley has some very charming qualities but he definitely needs to grow up. Grace and Bradley's future together hangs in the balance as Susan Kietzman brings the novel to a nail biting conclusion. Fans of contemporary women's fiction are sure to enjoy this heartwarming novel.

I really am giving 3&1/2 stars to this book. I don't know why, but I like the stories that Susan Kietzman tells. I loved The Summer Cottage and have been waiting impatiently for this book from the library as it was published in May. I wouldn't say this was as good as The Summer Cottage, but I liked it a lot.
Grace Trumbull has her life figured out. Although she felt unwanted and unloved as a child, she excelled in school and has become an extremely efficient and successful member of a media relations firm. She is 42, divorced and owns a beach house overlooking the Long Island Sound. She has it all.
One day, her boss comes to her office to congratulate her on landing a big account and to tell her that he has assigned the handsome 30 year old Paul Hanover to work with her. She finds that she and Paul work well together and after a late work session, they decide to go grab a drink and a burger from a local bar. One drink leads to another and they find themselves enormously attracted to one another. This leads to a backseat romantic tryst that will affect the rest of their lives.

First off: the good. The cover of this book is fantastic and makes me wish I was down by the beach. And the blurb sounded so interesting. However, the bad: the book itself.

At 42 years old, Grace is at a different part of her life. Her marriage recently ended because her husband wanted a baby and she just couldn't get to that point. She had a very rough childhood and was fearful that she would inflict that kind of relationship between her and the new baby.

One night, she hangs out with a coworker after hours, and they end up having sex in the backseat of her car. Lo and behold, she ends up pregnant. All of her friends encourage her to get an abortion, and the baby's father, who is in his 30s, seems to be too immature to make a decision.

The book's timeline flew by, and I felt like there wasn't enough character development. I didn't particularly care for either one of them, and in all honesty, there really wasn't much plot to this one. I found myself skimming pages because it just wasn't that interesting. And the ending to me was lackluster.

Grace is 42, Bradley is 30, they work together and go out for drinks one night. One thing leads to another and they have sex. And that leads to another thing-Grace is pregnant. They like each other, but neither was ready to commit. The story goes through their journey on whether or not to go through with the pregnancy, will they be together, and how their lives will progress. It's a quick and fairly easy read. But the thing that struck me is that this came out in 2018, and there is a lot of matter of fact discussion of abortion. It was a time when it was assumed that women had the right to control their own bodies, and that a decision made 50 years ago would not go backwards. Really scary and terrifying how things can change in such a short time. #bookstagram #susankietzman #itstartedinjune #reader #lovetoread #womensrights #rightochoose #vote #readersofinstagram #booklover #bookrecommendations #bookreview #lovetoread #booksbooksbooks #readallthebooks #takeapagefrommybook #bookblog #bookloversofinstagram

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Grace and Bradley. Both working at the same company. After working late they find themselves at a bar and then a little fun in the back of the car. That one night of fun will change their lives. Grace is older the Bradley, divorced and childless by choice. Bradley is young, carefree and enjoying his life. Now they find out that they will be parents. The choices that need to be made. Grace was raised by her grandparents, not in a loving home. She was the product of a young unwed mother. Bradley was raised by two wonderful professional parents. Grace has decided that she wants to keep to the baby, and will do it on her own if necessary.

I really enjoyed these characters and the growth that they take in their relationship, through out the book you don't know if the relationship will work out or not. Loved Grace's house on the beach. This is a light read that I recommend for summer reading.

This is my first time reading and reviewing a book before its publication, and I only have high praise for it. It's my second title by Susan Kietzman, and although this story is totally different from the one she tells in Every Other Wednesday, I got thoroughly engrossed in this one, too. I really enjoyed the different perspectives given to the unexpected and life-changing event that happened to Grace, the main character. I read this book on my tablet, so was able to take it everywhere in my purse. I even overshot my subway stop once because I was paying more attention to the story than the announcements. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys totally plausible stories about modern women, the choices that confront them, and how they decide to handle difficult decisions. Thank you Susan, for allowing me to be an early reader of your new book.

This was a good summer beach read. Grace is tall, beautiful, accomplished, had a difficult past, and is 42. She has a fling with 30-year-old co-worker Bradley and becomes pregnant. When she decides to keep the baby, life gets complicated. Susan Kietzman likes to explore what life is like during transitions, especially for women who appear to have everything under control, until all hell breaks loose. I did feel that Grace was a little too perfect and Bradley a little too immature for a 30-year-old. However, knowing his mother as I came to through this book, I can see why! She (Dorrie) is a therapist who crosses every line in the book. She and Bradley's dad were my favorite characters, with a degree of complexity. And, having lived on the Connecticut shoreline for a while, I enjoyed the setting immensely.

I enjoyed this book more then I thought I would. This is the first book I’ve read by this author. Grace comes from an unloving family background where she left right after graduating high school. She has a very good career for herself but she’s lonely and ends up shacking up with a coworker and winds up pregnant. Bradley is a handsome young man. This is the story of how Grace and Bradley handle the pregnancy situation while dealing with a very flirtatious coworker Rachel who is trying to lure Bradley away from Grace. In the end I feel Bradley made the right decision. I’m so glad it ended the way it did!! It would be interesting if this was part of a series and the next book was told from Graces best friends side Shannon!!!

When I first started to read the book, I was not sure I would like it. Was I wrong! It took a few chapters to get to know the characters. The main characters are Grace and Bradley.
They were employees who were worked together and had really nothing in common except they both loved the media company they worked for. As the plot developed , it took them to places in their lives that they could never have imagined they would go.
I was totally involved with Grace, Bradley and the people they shared their life with.
This is a novel that is not to be missed.
Thank you for allowing me to be an early reviewer.

Grace and Bradley have an impulsive sexual encounter that changes both their lives- and this novel is about what happens next. You know this plot but Kietzman has found some new angles. Grace is 12 years older than Bradley (who really is very immature for a 30 year old). Both of them have family and friends you'll recognize and in some cases really dislike. There's never really a question that Grace will have the baby so watching these two build a family is at the core of the novel. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is diverting women's fiction with a positive message.

This is the story of Grace and Bradley. After drinks in a bar one thing leads to another and one impetuous night leads to a life altering change for them. Grace has made life choices that change in an instant and Bradley’s immaturity makes him seem uncommitted. Grace soon embraces her new life, while Bradley has a rough start of it, which causes Grace to wonder if she can do it on her own. This was a good read.

I really liked this book but it also really made me mad. Which is what makes a good book, one that evokes strong emotions. I didn't give it a 5 because of the ending. The whole story is drawn out then it is wrapped up in one page. I almost thought it was going to leave me hanging and there would be a second book. So I was dissatisfied at the end for sure.

it bothered me how some sentences were so long for no reason and the fact that every conversation seemed stilted and awkward?
overall a nice easy read, i loved the beach-vibe to it
i don’t think you can ever excuse cheating, though i gotta say Rachel was borderline sexually harassing Bradley :/

Mature smart 41 year old woman and 30 year old smart but immature guy. He always needed parents and friend's advice. Good at work and they worked together. I was still worried that although he admired Grace -I wasn't convinced he would ever not be needy for other women's attention .
