Maa's dreams come true when the prince of Aksum chooses her to be his bride. However on the night of their marriage ceremony, the evil Pharaoh Lamani of Kemet invades Aksum with his army. He takes the throne and Maa as his concubine.
She should hate him, but each time their eyes meet it feels like she has known him all her life. Like the hauntingly beautiful Lamani should be hers.
Can she love someone who ruins everything she cherishes?
The story was overall okay but I really struggled how the concept of consent was handled here. Honestly, this whole "I spare his life if you sleep with me" was dubious consent at best ... but more likely coercion. Also putting someone on a spell and make them super horny and compliant before sleeping with them felt a lot like the magical equivalent of drugging/inebriating someone - again, dubious consent at best. There should also have been groveling on the hero's part... like A LOT, if you consider how much he fucked up. But of course he was forgiven right away lol Over all, I think this book tried really hard to pack a lot of content in a rather small amount of pages (130ish?) and it just did not work. There was barely any chemistry and everything felt super rushed. It would do the story more justice to either cut some unnecessary scenes and give the characters more room for connection or draw out the story over more pages.
this was quite the enjoyable read. I bought this book a *while back like I do most books lols but anyolways, it became part of the current read what you got challenge.
But lets talk about this book. Here we have Maa who is about to marry the Prince of the kingdom and she is happy, elated. Buutt, that all gets busted up when Pharaoh Lamani invades their homes. Now the Pharaoh didn't do this all willy nilly, he basically was getting at the Prince before he got at him. Cause Maa's ex future husband was plotting okay. But you can't plot on a thee Pharaoh! Anyolways, Maa gets caught up in the chaos and is kidnapped by thee Pharaoh. See, when thee Pharaoh sees Maa, he KNEW she was his in their past lives... they were lovers, like meant to be type lovers but their stations in that past life just had them at the sneaky link level.
So, back to now. Maa ain't happy. She upset and she is letting thee Pharaoh know it. But listen, she is attracted to him too. She feels like she knows him but Maa doesn't know anything about their past lives but like I said, thee Pharaoh does which is why he took her in the first place. Like on some real type mess, he was gonna "un-alive" her but when he saw her...he was like "my love!" lols. So this starts a journey of a somewhat push/pull between the two. And like I said, they were always meant to be. There is a lot of "stuff" between them and it makes their current situation tough to navigate. Love is never easy is it? smh.
This was a truly good read. I enjoyed the past lives aspect of this book. Also a thing to note, this story does go back and forth between thee Pharaoh's and Maa past/present lives. So, we are getting flashbacks. I liked Maa and thee Pharaoh as characters and the story was colorfully told. Definitely check this out if you love historical romance fiction.
well written, great premise, great world building. super sweet, Africa focused, magic and past lifetimes, honestly tens across the board. Asante - please we need more!!

Enjoyed reading this book. At first the multiple characters introduced in the beginning made the story confusing until I got the hang of the main characters. This is a story of mma a Shepard girl who was kidnapped by Pharaoh to become his concubine. He falls for her instead and there’s a connection between them in previous reincarnations. A good story.
I enjoyed reading this book about Pharaoh Lamani and Maa love journey and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Pharaoh Lamani raided Prince Omek's palace because he stopped paying him homage and conspired against him. Prince Omek chose to flee like a coward and left his new wife Maa. Maa gave herself freely to Pharaoh Lamani for him to spare Prince Omek's life. They ended up falling in love and she's now pregnant with Khafre. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I'm not sure how to rate this. I don't know if my problems with the storytelling are a cultural issues (historical romance set in Africa written by a Kenyan author) or actual craft issues. It almost read like short vignettes rather than one overall story arc. The characters and setting were interesting, but the consent seemed somewhat dubious at times and Maa's emotions weren't always consistent.
