Can love really happen later in life? Penny White was doing just fine as a cashier in the small town of Bucksville, New Hampshire. She had three cats and an apartment to herself. So what if she was in her mid-thirties and had yet to have a serious boyfriend? So what if she’d never left her tiny little town? She was happy in her sheltered life, or at least she was pretending to be. Everything was just the way she liked it, until a reporter from The Sunset Journal waltzed into her life, turning her predictable world upside down. What did this man want from her and was it something she was willing to give him? It’s time for Penny to stop and take stock of what it is she really wants.
Danielle Bannister, a.k.a. Dani Bannister is a best-selling author who lives with her two children in Midcoast Maine along with her precious peppermint mocha creamer. She holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Southern Maine and her Masters in Literary Education from the University of Orono. When she's not on the stage, or on the page, you'll find her binge-watching Marvel Movies. As one does.
Taking Stock is the third book in Danielle Bannister’s A Later in Life Romance series. Each book can read as standalone. I don’t want to spoil anything so I will try to make this fast.
Penny is a 36 year old manager in her small town grocery store. She works. Goes home to her three cats. Eats a TV dinner. Sleeps. Repeats. She hasn’t completely given up on love but she is almost there. Every October her town comes alive with tourists and they give her hope that one will sweep her off her feet.
Rob needs this story. Small town romance between states. Two people living in small towns that would never met until he played matchmaker. He thought he gave up on finding singles until Penny reluctantly agreed. The problem? She doesn’t know how to date. This was going to be harder than he thought but knew it would be worth it.
I can’t really say more than that except that it’s real. I love that the characters are older. Have common jobs and average bodies. Oh, I do love the abs too, believe me but this series is refreshing. This story is full of laughter, wit, and realness.
Quotes:
“Save the feminist rant that I know you’re about to give me. The reason a man opens your car door is not because he thinks you are frail and can’t do it yourself. He opens the door for two reasons. One, to show you the respect you deserve. And two, to get one last look at your ass.”
I allowed Rob to take the lead and show me a world I’d never been invited to participate in before. I was ready.
“Sounds like I might like basketball.” “Baseball,” he corrected gently.
This is another book set in the small town of Bucksville, NH. With each book, I fall more in love with the characters and the town itself.
This book follows Penny, a lifetime employee of the Shop & Go, on an unwilling journey to find a “happily ever after.”
The characters are real, flaws and all, and this book had plenty of tender moments as well as some moments that had me laughing out loud. I highly recommend this series, which can be read in any order, but especially this book, Taking Stock.
Danielle writes really life characters in situations that could be done in real life. This story is no different. This book follows Penny as she tries to navigate through life with the added obstacle of dating.
Danielle wrote this book beautifully. Making it seem like this is a real person that is going through all of this and Danielle has documented it all.
Sometimes, I think the romance world is for 20 somethings. I am not 20. I don't think love is only for the young and this book proves it. Enjoy I really loved these characters so much!
