From Carpinteria, California, we left. In Arizona, we barely spoke. In New Mexico, I gave him a promise that I knew I couldn’t keep. In Texas, we slept under the stars. In Oklahoma, he told me a story I wouldn’t soon forget. In Louisiana, he gave my soul a voice. Between Arkansas and Mississippi, we took full advantage of an opportunity. In Tennessee, I studied his face. In Kentucky, he introduced me to his parents. In Ohio, he found my heart. In West Virginia, we drank whiskey and told ourselves that truths are better left untold. In Maryland, we felt the weight of the night. In Pennsylvania, his wife called. And in New York, I asked myself one question:
J. Lynn is a bestselling author, mother, and wife. When she isn't running between soccer practices, working on another school fundraiser, or chasing a new puppy, you can probably find her holed up in her writing room feverishly working on her next novel.
I don't know how she does it, but J. Lynn Bailey continues to crank out books better than the last. Her writing speaks to the deepest parts of my heart and her stories continue to captivate me days (weeks/months) after finishing them. The Light We See has easily become my favorite of J. Lynn's to date! I have such an abundance of highlights, I could hardly pick the quotes I wanted to share for this review.
"Joy is the feeling we get when we set our burdens free."
I always love a good road trip story and this one was absolutely perfect, describing areas I've visited on my own road trips over the years. I firmly believe nothing allows people to get to know each other quicker than hours in the car (or time playing board games - but this is neither here nor there), and J. Lynn was able to display this dynamic exquisitely. Catherine and Luke's relationship gave me all the feels on this cross-country drive. I was apprehensive, excited, happy, and heartbroken along the way. I wasn't anxious about predicting about what would happen in this story, as I usually am with the books I read, I only felt like I was along for the ride (pun intended) with these two.
"Because we love, we grieve. Whether it was a good relationship, a complicated one, or just plain ugly. It's still the end. And we've got to do something about all those feelings."
I was won over by these beautifully broken characters who completely jumped off the pages as if they were real people. It's quite clear Luke Perry was the inspiration for Luke in this story and I can't help but be struck by the emotion of the tribute this novel pays to him as a person many women grew up loving. Knowing he inspired J. Lynn made the story even more realistic for me, in turn, making me love it all the more. There were countless twists I didn't see coming in The Light We See, each one surprised me more than the last. I couldn't believe how invested and unprepared I was for this book, in the best possible way.
"I know it will take my heart time to heal with past traumas, past hurts, and it might not ever heal completely, but I have faith that I'm right where I'm supposed to be -- finally."
If you're in need of a beautiful love story that will tug on your heartstrings, look no further. And if you've yet to read J. Lynn Bailey, what on earth are you waiting for? Grab this book immediately...along with a box of tissues.
This book was... Moving. It was beautiful. It was heartbreaking and so well written that I fell into a place where I didn't exist anymore as this story transported me into the moments lived with two outstanding main characters. Even knowing where it was going and how it would hurt, I couldn't stop.
You know a book owns you when you cannot stop thinking about it. When the book itself is no longer a story but an experience.
I never read anything by this author before. I am so glad I did, I will be keeping my eyes out for anything and everything she writes from now on.
Well you know what, if J. Lynn Bailey is not one of your "go-to-auto-buy" authors you need to STOP sleeping on her right this instant. And if you haven't read any of her other books before now, this will be the one that I highly suggest that you start with. Now let me begin...
I absolutely LOVED these characters. Every single one of them. I loved the two main characters and their journey sure, but the people they met along the way, that I got to meet along the way, really stole this show for me. Experiencing the different places and people throughout this novel, and their insight and their dynamics with the main characters really sealed the deal for mt.
Also I really loved how the two characters got to know each other through the stories they told and the people they met. At first they don't know a single thing about each other (or so we think). But as they embark on this journey together they learn so much which meant that so did we! And to me that made the story so much fun and that much more heartfelt. That these two people too the time to break themselves down for the other. Ugh. Loveeeed it.
The Light We See was a story full of hope and love. It was full of change, growth, and grief. Heartbreak and finding love. It had powerful messages and nicely done twists all throughout the book. It was the whole package. If you read this book and don't find ONE message to take with you long after it's gone, you should probably just read it all again because you must not have been paying attention the first time :D I said what I said.
It’s all about the journey! The journey through the present while revisiting the past. To heal and grieve the life that came before and to welcome what's left ahead. Wow, this author does an incredible job of keeping me captivated and thinking I know what this book is all about, then...BAM...she catches me off guard. All I can say is this book brought me to tears.
"The light we see, Meant for you and me. Pieces of me you put together, Made me stronger, Us stronger, We were made for one another."
The Light We See by J. Lynn Bailey is a MUST read and will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ELITE!!!
Luke and Catherine's story is so captivating and REAL!! I haven't cried this much since Me Before You and that book literally ripped my heart out. I devoured every page of The Light We See, and I still wanted more. This story was about self-discovery, change, life and even in loss you can get more from life than you ever expected.
What the heck! Amazing 🤩 just didn’t see that coming. I think maybe the best book I’ve read this year. It’s such a beautifully written book and I found myself oooooing and awwing all the way through. But it’s a tear jerker. My advice, go in blind.
I have so many high lighted passages.
If not ………. Then Catherine is a writer and she has just been released from prison. Her Mother is in a high care facility and cannot walk or talk. Catherine has fallen behind in care pmts and needs a job desperately to pay bills. Catherine get a job to write an article on a movie star and has 2 hours to get to him as Luke before embarking on a road trip.
“ one thing I’ve learned about growing up with my family, it’s not about having it’s about giving. It’s about what we get from those moments that make us who we are. That we get to take those moments, tuck them into our hearts, and remember them because it helped us become better.
“ I love you more than all the grains of sand in the world” I love you more than all the stars in the galaxy. I love you more than all the book pages from the beginning of time to present. I’ll love you from death.
This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you J. Lynn Bailey!
Little White Christmas is a short story set in the Dillon Creek series and tells the story of Sarah Beth and Shane.
Little White Christmas was such a cute short story and perfect for this time of the year. I really enjoy reading Christmas books and watching Christmas movies and TV shows, so when I got Little White Christmas on my ereader, I was so excited! Little White Christmas was a good Christmas read and I really enjoyed reading it.
I liked getting to know Sarah Beth and Shane, they’re both likeable characters and their story is really cute. I’m happy that they got a second chance at love. I think that Little White Christmas is a sweet short story and I recommend it to everything who’s looking for a short and good Christmas Romance story!
Uh hello? 911? I’d like to report a robbery. My heart is gone and I can’t handle what I just read. Y’all I’m still new to J. Lynn Bailey but holy guacamole these last 2 books she delivered gripping stories and it seems to get better and better. I can’t wait for what she has in store next.
I’m speechless yet there’s so much I want to say. It’s only been a few minutes since I finished this and I feel lost somehow. This was not what I expected. I only went into this expecting a story about two people on a road trip since I love those, I didn’t expect to have my heart ripped out of my chest and to end up with a book I will probably never forget. I couldn’t stop sobbing at the end, it was such a beautiful story yet such a sad one. I think when I first read the prologue I realized it wouldn’t be the story I thought it would be but damn, I wanted to be wrong so badly. This was so beautiful, it might have made me cry a lot but I loved this and I’ll be forever hurt by this.
This book was 🥺🥺🥺. The blurb was a bit misleading, almost didn’t read it because of that but I’m glad I did. Still crying. One of those books that makes you really reflect on your own relationships.
So I've really enjoyed J.Lynn Bailey's previous Maine set books and she has really pretty covers. This blurb was vague and when I read the book it was more than that. It sounded straight forward but it wasn't at all. But I love road trip sort of themes and this was one that changed them. It may have started awkward but it became so much more.
This was a journey to the past for both Cat and Luke what shaped them things they've done. Making amends. Cat learns about herself and her reconciles her feelings about love with her past. Luke aims to find closure for many things in his life. This road trip was a look into that and it also brought a love story full circle. Coincidences somehow brought them together.
This had somber and heart wrenching moments as well as a beautiful message among all that. It will pull on your heartstrings. It's hard to review without giving away too much but I will say it's not your typical happy ending. It's meaningful and poignant when you think about it.
It's hard to say much about this story and not get into a summary. I don't want to do that. Catherine and Luke's story is A LOT. It is just so enjoyable to go on this adventure with them, and the writing is simply gorgeous. This is a discovery story. This is a story about life, and love, and good and bad and ugly. A road trip is an excellent plot device and story driver, and it just is so perfect for this literal character journey. You will have all the feels. They will not all be good feels. You will close your reading device and stare off into space, trying to absorb and reckon with these words. Cannot recommend highly enough - each book I read by this author just gets better! It's hard to say much about this story and not get into a summary. I don't want to do that. This book deserves more than 5 stars...let’s start there....that quote stood out to me and one I will not forget.
I LOVE this book so much! Luke and Catherine are amazing, well written characters. I can’t think of them and NOT cry. My heart still aches at their story....their story apart and their story together. Their story before, during and after. Let that sink in.
I don’t think I have cried as much as I did after reading Standing Sideways. The Light We See will definitely break you, how can it NOT after certain circumstances leave no other way for these characters.
This is where I just break down....it’s the reminder of the Catherines and Lukes out in the world. Once you read this book you’ll understand. I can’t say much without giving away (which I don’t want to do) but what they have to face reminds me that there are people in the real world dealing with what the characters did in the book. It just absolutely breaks me to know there are many Fionas and James out there too. It’s a reminder of the crappy hand lots are dealt.
As I was reading, Luke’s words were so profound that I felt he truly makes an impact with living life, loving hard and laughing out loud. I highlighted certain quotes that touched my heart I felt as if he were speaking directly to me. I only hope it does the same to others.
Catherine, my heart hurts for her. I’m so glad that she was able to find some type of peace with her situation. Her journey was not easy but her survival skills amaze me.
If you’ve read J Lynn Bailey then you’re familiar with her writing style. Her writing in The Light We See didn’t make me feel as if I were reading fiction or romance. I felt as if I were friends with these characters and having a reunion and getting caught up on life. The Light We See isn’t just about 2 characters connecting....no, it’s about forgiveness, acceptance, regrets, love, friendship, family, truths and living. It’s not just about Catherine and Luke but all the other characters we meet along on the journey.
“When you look back on this life, when you’re old and gray, you’ll give yourself the gift of forgiveness.”
Fate brings Luke and Catherine together on a journey that is about so much more than the distance they travel and the sites they see. It is the journey of truly getting to know another person, imperfections and all, and the love and emotion that goes along with it. They have lived very different lives before they met each other but the understanding and empathy they have for each other is unlike anything you have ever seen.
The characters are engaging, the plot is compelling and the emotions heartfelt. This is a beautiful story about love and healing that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
“It’s a funny and peculiar thing—love. Love is the only thing that can fuck you up and tell you everything is completely normal. That it is the way things should be.”
Wow!!! As soon as I received this beauty on my kindle, I knew it was going to be an awesome read! This book is special, different! And that’s exactly what I love about it! I can’t stop thinking about Luke and Cat! Their journey is so emotional, sweet, sad, beautiful, I couldn’t put it down. It consumed me, especially because I knew I was going to cry. Ugly cry! TLWS is definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year. I was having a hard time finding a good book with a true impact in life, and then, I read this one. It was perfect! Every tear was worth it! Every page delivered emotions and all the feels!
“Sometimes, it’s the light within the storm that saves us even if we think we don’t need saving.”
Wow! This is truly an amazing book! It's captivating, sexy, intense & emotionally moving. J. Lynn Bailey, never fails to deliver. Catherine ❤ Luke's story will pull all your heartstrings. It's well-written & has beautifully developed characters with some intense & incredible scenes. It will draw you in, from the very beginning, & keep you reading till the end. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
I love reading Christmas romances and this one hit the spot. It was wonderful returning to Dillon Creek. Shane and Sarah Beth's story was sweet and got me into the festive mood. It is perfect holiday novella that I read in one sitting. Little White Christmas by J. Lynn Bailey is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!
A little “Hallmark moment” to pick-me-up on a cold & rainy day – along with a cup of hot chocolate with a peppermint stick. Small town atmosphere with sweet and touching second chance to make things right between a cowboy and the girl he loves.
I've really been struggling to read lately and it's been taking me awhile to connect with books for me to carry on reading. I've even been trying different authors that I haven't read before and I have to say it has really helped me.
I came across this book while looking for something different to read. I hadn't read anything by this author before, so I downloaded a sample to try first. Well I only read a couple of pages and I knew right away that this was going to be something amazing and right away I bought the book. As soon as I started reading this book, I loved the feeling I got from it right from the start, I just knew this was going to be something special and I fell in love with the writing from the first page. This book has taken over my life for the past two days and I have loved every word and page of it and I can't remember how long it's been that I felt this way about a book, I have lived and breathed it. The writing and story was amazing and I fell in love with both Catherine and Luke. I absolutely loved their journey and being with them on it. I had so many emotions reading this amazing story and it blew me away with it. I don't think I will ever forget this book, it's left its mark on me forever, I just loved it so much and its probably one of the best books I've read this year. It was just AMAZING! Wow!
I'm now going to see if this author has any other books I can read.
Technically I DNF’ed this one but that’s none of bezos’ business!!
Review:
I wouldn’t say this was a terrible book I’d say it just wasn’t that interesting to me ! The writing is ok ( better than most highly rated ~romances~) but nothing extraordinary. As for the main couple, talk about zero chemistry. Every exchange felt forced, unnatural and rushed. I was rolling my eyes every time they talked about what they felt towards the other but I’m sure teenage moi would’ve found it swoon-worthy lmao. Cat’s backstory was interesting in theory but poorly developed which I found to be very frustrating. As for Luke, I just didn’t care for him and his (ex)career but I also don’t care for celebrities in general and I try to avoid reading about them in fiction as much as I can but these lying ass reviews tricked me once again 🙄. Since I didn’t enjoy the couple, the ending didn’t do anything for me. I guess it just wasn’t for me.
Wow, just wow. I don't know where to begin because I'm an emotional mess right now. I know it's fiction, but sheesh. I loved how the story brought Luke and Catherine together. I loved how they didn't ask each other the questions they wanted to ask, but over time the questions were answered. I loved the whole road trip and meeting the people that were important to Luke. It was obvious to me what Luke was doing, but it was written so beautifully. Catherine had such a warm calmness about her. What happened to her, her family and the consequences made her wise beyond her years. They are both broken souls, but being together made them whole. I'm an emotional person in general, but I think most people who read this may need a tissue or two. Don't get me wrong, its not a doom and gloom book. There is joy and laughter amongst some heavier things. It's a beautiful story. I loved it.
The Light We See by J. Lynn Bailey absolutely destroyed me. I loved this novel so much. The book centers around Catherine (Cat) and Luke, and is about their journey of love, loss, and healing. Catherine has just been released from prison after spending about 13 years there and goes on a road trip with the famous actor Luke so she can interview him for her job. The chapters switch points of view between Catherine in the present, Catherine in the past in jail, and Luke. There is a bit of a mystery with the crime Cat committed and why she went to jail and also with the secrets Cat and Luke are keeping from one another. While I did see some of the intended plot twists coming, I did not see all of them, and I still thoroughly enjoyed reading their story. I thought the relationship was built nicely and it didn't feel rushed. One of my critiques is how they're able to come together so fast after her having been in jail for the majority of her life and the fact that she was able to just hop into his car in the first place. But overall, their story brought tears to my eyes. The author's depiction of grief and healing from loss was very accurate and done in a way that didn't seem fake. There were a few times I felt like Luke and Cat were being a bit melodramatic and using big words just because, but it never seemed overly cheesy to me. I really loved their relationship and how they were able to help each other heal. They learned from one another and the connection between these characters felt very real. Overall, I think anyone looking for a good romance or story about loss and healing should pick The Light We See up.
When I started this book I never daw the ending coming. To say that I was blindsided is an understatement. I wanted the fairy tale ending but that isn't what I got.I cried through most of this book and was sobbing at the end. Bit I would read it again in a heartbeat. It is very well written with many thoughtful insights to reflect back on. I am so glad that I chose this book. One of the nest so far and that is why I gave it 5 stars!
