Synopsis:
A conman turned private investigator for Blackhawk Security, Elliot Dunham goes in all guns blazing when he hears his next-door neighbour - Dr Waylynn Hargraves - scream her guts out. Finding himself in the middle of a crime scene, with Waylynn's lab assistant dead, Elliot believes in his professional capacity that she's not the killer. But what if the lady herself believes she is? And what if later evidence turns up to the contrary?

Waylynn leads a quiet life, what with her research work at Genism Corporation taking up much of her time. She looks forward to a blissful evening every day with her next-door neighbour Elliot (totally platonic). But after Alexis' murder, she doesn't feel safe as she's unable to recall what exactly happened just before the crime took place. And as her memory resurfaces, there is someone who wants her dead. She seeks out Elliot's help, but will he be able to keep her alive?

Review:
Nichole Severn writes explosive romantic suspense with strong heroines, heroes who dare challenge them and a hell of a lot of guns.

And that introduction sums up why I love this author so much. Especially the 'strong heroines' part. She has dedicated this book to her readers, to us. Thank you so much for that honour! And I'm glad that I got to be a part of this adventure.
This is why you never send a man to do a woman’s job.

Rules in Defiance is Elliot's story, the same Elliot whose cheeky presence throughout the previous three books in this series had my heart. I was waiting eagerly for his story, ever since his introduction in the first book:
Like a pit bull with his favourite chew toy, Elliot never gave up and never surrendered.

And from the first instance that he opens his mouth, even in the dire circumstances that Elliot and Waylynn find themselves in, he is as humorous, as sarcastic, and as amusing as ever!
I don’t know about you, but I haven’t had this much excitement since getting shot at a few months ago.

Waylynn (a character name I don't think I have read before) works at Genism Corporation’s lab, the most profitable biotech company in Alaska. When her assistant, Alexis Jacobs, requests a meet up to discuss something alarming that she found in the genetic testing project they had been working on, the next thing she knows is that Alexis is dead and she can't remember anything. To the extent that she believes that she is the one who killed her, just like before. A mystery or should I say tragedy in the past, I love it!
This couldn't be happening. Not again. She couldn’t go through this again.

I didn't like the police's attitude while interrogating Waylynn. I know it's their job but I wanted to jump in and protect her. Why should anyone's past be used against them? But our strong as nails heroine stands up for herself. And then Elliot appoints himself as her bodyguard. Sigh! My heart.

Elliot and Waylynn (I love that name) keep their feelings to themselves but these next-door neighbours are hot for each other. And after this incident, Elliot is more possessive than ever of Waylynn, his only friend outside of his work. I wonder how the author comes up with this cutesy nicknames! They give such a real touch to the stories (not going to reveal the nickname).

Almost with every other chapter, when I am expecting the least, the author comes up with a shock or a surprise. And never before this had I heard a reason like this for the heroine keeping the hero at bay. It's unique and interesting, something else.

Even before the book reaches the halfway mark, there's a rocking 'who saves who' scene, not saying anything and not going to spoil it. You'll love reading this! This book is more dangerous than all of the ones before it. But has a sweet ending to compensate for the extra danger.

P.S. For a private investigator, he keeps files on even his teammates "and the saddest of them all, their psychologist, Kate Monroe". And now I'm intrigued, what exactly is Kate's sad story, which will be the next book in the series - Rules in Surrender. The epilogue has a revelation about the next book.

Thank you to the author for an e-ARC of the book.

Elliot Dunham assists his neighbour, Dr Waylynn Hargraves, when she discovers the dead body of her assistant in her apartment's bathtub! Waylynn hires him as her private investigator so that he and his Blackhawk Security team can help find out who killed her assistant and is now trying to frame Waylynn for the murder. Waylynn is a scientist who has been doing trials on what she calls the "warrior gene", some nonsense that can one day turn normal people into violent offenders. Could her research be behind what is happening to her?

Of course, Elliot and Waylynn have more than neighbourly feelings for each other. She wants something more from the relationship, but Elliot's past has him putting up defences. One thing that definitely stands in the way of their happiness is the fact that Waylynn has been accused of murder before - accused of killing her own father!

Pretty good action romance thriller. The stuff about the warrior gene was a bit too silly to be really believable, but I was able to let that slide. The pacing was steady, and there was plenty of action and suspense to keep me hooked! My big problem was with Waylynn. She was such a mopey drip, and her too stupid to live behaviour in the later part of the book made me face-palm. She tested my patience. The prose is often a bit too melodramatic, and the author bizarrely overuses the word "sternum".

Intense action from the start! With the fourth book in her Blackhawk Security series, Nichole Severn brings us RULES IN DEFIANCE which turns a friends to lovers trope into a daring race against time as danger lurks all around them. The characters are attention grabbing and the intrigue is top notch. Really enjoyed!

Elliot Dunham portrays his protective streak right from the first page when he jumps to attention when he hears Waylynn in distress. He's lived a life of danger and deceit, but it doesn't take a reader long to feel an affinity to the soul beneath the mask.

Waylynn has a secret past behind her that only makes her look guiltier when it comes to light ... and that same past makes her believe she doesn't deserve the goodness that Elliot could offer her. She's determined to make a difference ... and she'll stop at nothing to make sure she can.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced, highly intense book filled with great characters, bewitching intrigue and that sought after happily ever after!

What is the chance of being accused of murder twice in your life?
Waylynn is sure she is being set up, again. But she can not for the life of her remember a thing about that day. Drugged? Probably. But proving her innocence and staying alive in the process is more difficult than anyone expected.
Elliot works for Blackhawk Security to pay off his past. Waylynn is his neighbor and dare he say it, his only friend. He is convinced of her innocence when she discovers a body in her bathtub, but he is yet to learn of her sealed up past.
“This was the start of how it all ended.
And she sure as hell wasn’t going down without a fight”
This fast paced story kept me on the edge of my seat. Sometimes I thought it had been edited a little too harshly and reread bits to make sure I didn’t miss something. Perhaps the word count cap imposed impacted this especially early on. I did however really enjoy the escapism of this punchy action filled suspense romance. This book is part of the Blackhawk Security series but can be read as a stand-alone novel with hea. Several characters (the Blackhawk Security team) from earlier novels appear in this book.
I received an arc of this book.

I just know I had to get into this one as soon as I could. I was ready for a good intrigue that could keep you guessing and jumping as this author could do that. The murder will bring in the questions with Waylynn being part of the questions. As the danger does build so does our anxiety at times keeping on Elliot hoping he stays on his toes. With knowing that what is and could be coming after them you want to help but just keep turning the pages. You become their shadows wanting the answers as bad as they do. This author delivered what I craved a suspenseful story that holds you by your teeth with romance included.

This is the fourth book in Nichole's Blackhawk Security series and it's excellent! From the first chapter, I was hooked and I had a very hard time putting it down (but work kept getting in the way)!

Elliot and Waylynn are an awesome couple and I love them. Eliot with his con man past and brilliant Waylynn, tough as nails and brilliant. My heart hurt for them as they tried to get through their issues and I must admit, a tear or two did fall as I read parts of this book. Their pain felt so real. I do have to also admit, though, I had the bad guy figured out long before the end of the book. His reasons, not so much.

This book was awesome, but then this whole series has been awesome, each book better than the last! If you love action-packed friends-to-lovers romantic suspense, you really need to read this book.

What a book. I love this series and truth be told I couldn’t what for Elliot’s book to come out.
He’s what character that makes you laugh in a dire situation. He so did in the opening scene when he heard a scream and knew where it was coming from. No hesitation he ran and broke down the door to his next door neighbor. Waylynn was important. When he stepped into her bathroom she wasn’t the same person. What transpired next was so not good.

Edge of your seat book. As in the books before Ms. Severn kept me turning the pages so quick.
I didn’t want it to end. Elliot wasn’t want one that stuck around, but that changed when Waylynn’s life and his as well were on the line. He knew she was more than just his next door neighbor.

Buy the book because there’s so much more....

4.5* ARC Review – Great Action, Adventure and Romance!!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my review. This is the first book I have read by this author but will definitely not be the last! I cannot wait to read the beginning of this series which is on Kindle Unlimited. The some of the others are part of Harlequin Intrigue, so I cannot borrow them.
This is the story of Dr Waylynn Hargraves, who wakes up screaming because she is next to the body of her dead assistant. Her neighbor and best friend Elliot comes to find out why she is yelling. Using his investigation skills and resources from Blackhawk Security, Elliot is set to figure out who is framing Waylynn for murder. She has a very complicated backstory that makes her look guilty.
There is chemistry between Waylynn and Elliot but they do fight it for a good portion of the book. Between Elliot not wanting to stay in one place and Waylynn’s impression that she cannot be with anyone, they are fighting themselves good portion of the time. There is so much action and adventure throughout the book that keeps you on the edge of the seat and guessing who trying to harm Waylynn. It is a great story and cannot wait to read more of this series!

An energetic adrenaline rush from the first scene to the last page!
I absolutely love the way these books in this series are written, the thrilling non-stop action, and the romance that entices, intrigues and fascinates. The characters allure and attract yet are not perfect, they have faults, they are broken and have made mistakes, making them easy to relate to, to cheer for, and fall in love with. The connection between Waylynn and Elliot is palpable, they are adorable and the dialogue between them is brilliant.
The book is part of a series yet could be easily read as a standalone, though I do recommend the whole series if you enjoy reading riveting suspense and enchanting love stories.

Dr. Waylynn Hargraves is a genetic scientist working at a well respected lab when her assistant calls to tell her something, and asks to come by. Next thing Waylynn knows is that she is lying on the floor and her friend is dead in the bathtub. Elliot Dunham is an investigator with Blackstone Security and has been living across the hall from Waylynn for a year when he hears a blood curdling scream from her apartment, and has to break down the door to help her. Elliot knows about Waylynn's history but he doesn't believe she's a murderer.
This story was "can't put it down" reading!! It's a fascinating, fast-paced, roller-coaster ride that you do not want to miss!!!
This author is new to me but will definitely be an auto buy from now on!

Rules in Defiance is the fourth book in Severn’s Blackhawk Security series and it is packed full of great characters, a gripping storyline, excitement, danger, suspense, and romance. The action pulls you in from the beginning and the intriguing plot will entice you to keep turning the pages. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I think it would be better enjoyed with the rest of the series as other characters from the series make appearances throughout the story. This one is a friends to lovers trope with a satisfying HEA and includes a titillating snippet for the next book…I am hooked already!

This is a neat book. Two people who have been talking each evening after work about likes and dislikes. Then one night Dr Waylynn Hargrave world is changed. With the help of her neighbour and friend Elliot Dunham. The story takes you on a story of action and mystery. There is enough suspense in to keep you guessing as to who is the real bad guy. Its a neat story that Nichols keeps you curious with who is the real bad guy and getting to know the characters. I love the way their love deepens as they face many challenges. The ending is kinda of interesting and makes me curious for the next book. J

Elliot’s next door neighbor, Waylynn, is framed for a murder. Will her 15 year old secret keep him from protecting her or will it drive a wedge between them big enough to let the mastermind complete his plan to kill her.
I absolutely couldn’t put it down once I started it this morning. I had to weave my way through all the subterfuge that had you trying to find the path to the head person. It wasn’t one I had figured it to be. Plenty of suspense and romance to make it one you can’t put down.

Elliot is a private investigator with Blackhawk Security. Waylynn is his neighbor that is being framed for murder. Elliot has taken it upon himself to help her even protect her from a mama moose and the real killer. Each of these books have twist that keeps you eagerly turning the pages until the end. I also feel like the amount of action has intensified within each story too. Just when you think you've figured it out another twist is thrown in. I'm patiently waiting for the next book. I received an ARC of this and volunteered to review it.

This is the fourth book in the Blackhawk Security series, and I have read the previous two. As always I feel blessed to have found this author. I absolutely loved Elliot and Waylynn as a couple, and I read the whole book in just a couple hours this morning. This book was action packed from the start, I have that each book of Nichole's that I read has grown in her ability to hold the reader interest from the beginning of the book. I would highly recommend this book and author to others.

Very intense from start to finish. Immediately begins with a body in the neighbors bathtub and keeps going from there. Someone doesn't like the results of her research and will do anything to see it stopped, including murder. This book has everything, suspense, murder, romance and mystery. Early copy was provided, review given voluntarily.

Fabulous read, loved Elliot and Waylynn's story! This book is the best Blackhawk security book so far. These two have to go through so much, each feels that they don't deserve to have a loving relationship, it's a rollercoaster of emotions! Blackhawk security books just get better and better, bring on Rules In Surrender Kate and Declans story, I can't wait for it.

I lost all respect for Elliott for what he said and the end wasn't convincing. Would have preferred him to grovel more and for the heroine to not forgive him so soon.

I enjoyed this latest book in the series.
Waylynn and Elliot are good strong characters, very likeable, and the other characters from Blackhawk Security are also in this book, so it's like meeting old friends.
The plot is unusual, with twists and turns and secrets, that keep you guessing to the end.
I am enjoying this series and I am looking forward to reading the next book.
