Eden is an R&B superstar who has lost her passion for music. Andrew is a pastor who doesn't believe in God. Although for different reasons, both of them move through life with an enormous amount of pressure on their backs.
On the night of her concert in New Orleans, Eden sneaks out of an afterparty and mistakes Andrew's car for her ride home. Despite the fact that Eden claims she's famous, Andrew's never heard of her and he doesn't care that she's stranded.
Eden's not used to people saying no to her. And that's exactly what Andrew does, marking the beginning of a journey neither of them saw coming.
Andrew and Eden are unlike each other in many ways, but both are dealing with their own demons. Just as their issues threaten to crumble them both, they find each other.
This is a standalone.Content
This book is a contemporary slow burn romance.Despite the summary and story elements, this is NOT Christian fiction. At least, not in the traditional sense.Language and sexual content in this book may offend some.
Forever a South Florida girl, Millie Belizaire has a thrill for the exciting (and a little of the weird), unnecessarily sped up music, and painting. Most of the time, however, she can be found tucked in her cozy lair typing away at her laptop. A storyteller to the bone, she finds no greater joy than sharing her tales of love, of action, of pain, and of life.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Stars….It took a really long time for this book to come together for me….Initially, I had no connection to the couple….I was curious as to what would happen to the Bishop and Olivia…more than Eden and Andrew.
Ok even though I talked MAD trash at the 85% mark in this book, I absolutely LOVED this story!!! This was a slow burn and I do mean sloooooooow burning love story but the pace was perfect in order to set the tone for really getting to know Eden and Andrew! The character development was THOROUGH and you really get to truly connect with the characters.
Eden was a 22 year old R&B singer who had no control over her own life. She was told what to wear, what to eat, you name it! She had a strained relationship with her mother and even though she was surrounded by people who claimed to only want what’s best and worshiped by millions of fans, she felt alone. It wasn’t until a chance encounter with a handsome 26 year old pastor who didn’t believe in God where she felt most like her true self! Drew had his reasons for his lack of faith and my heart truly broke for him! He suffered the worst kind of tragedy and essentially relived his nightmare daily. The two people in his life that he should’ve been able to trust the most did him the grimiest!
I’m not gonna lie, I kinda felt bad for Anika too. Even though she went full on crazy I feel like Andrew could have handled their situation a bit better knowing their history and all she endured. Sis said you got folks calling me crazy?! I’ll show you crazy!! 😳🫣😬
I loved little Olivia!! Millie…. 🗣YOU TRIED IT!!! 😒….. This was my second book by this author and I really enjoy the feelings her books naturally bring out of you! You can feel these characters emotions! The anxiety, the butterflies, the sadness… it was as if I was in the book with them! Add to you tbr list tuhday!
Whew this was a sloooow burn. Most of the book is solid, feels like a decent story, but it turns up at about 87%. I know sounds crazy, but stay down. Keep reading!
Listen there was a lot going on. Let's start with Eden. I didn't really care for her, but I gave her a pass because she was young. She was 22 and a newly famous popstar trying to navigate the eyes of the world on her. Her issues with her mother caused her to lack confidence and it spilled throughout her life. She just never felt good enough. However, for the first time with Andrew she thought she might just be enough....until ish hit the fan.
Andrew, wow we don't have all day to run down all of the things. He was a youth Pastor that had lost his faith after a heartbreaking situation when he was a teenager caused him to wonder how God would allow such badness to happen. He was broken and in that brokenness attached himself to Anika, a woman that seemed to be even more broken than he was. Chile I was over her spiteful, grimy, entitled as$. I wanted her to catch a fade so bad, I know I'm petty because karma was handling her BUT STILL. Drew and Anika had an unhealthy attachment for years, that Drew seemed to be unable to let go of.......until he met Eden. I loved the way he described her, in his mind this man thought Eden was perfection and he seemed to love her mostly in her most basic state and honestly I wanted him to say all of the things out loud. However, he was a quiet soul trying his best to protect his already broken heart. Eden wore him down and slowly crept in filling in gaps of his broken heart. I knew he was in trouble because he allowed her all up and through his space and of course the sweet quiet intimate moments.
Then when the conflict hit, it hit hard. His professional life seemed to be progressing but his personal life was crumbling. I wasn't even ready, like at all for the heartbreak. Poor Drew was going through it while Eden was being selfish, sigh she was all types of wrong. Drew deserved happiness and I'm glad he finally got it.
SN: Idk if I could befriend Sabina because how were you unprepared ma'am, HOW. Clearly I need prayer.
This was my second read by this author and I'm absolutely certain she is now one of my favorite authors. Eden and Andrew both have a troubling past that prevents them from easily falling in love. Both characters are in denial about their attraction and interest in one another. When they finally accept the fact that this could possibly be love, life throws them a few problems that could be minor but are perceived as major.
This story takes place mainly in New Orleans (which is my hometown) and that made me want to read this story so much more. The author did an exceptional job with giving this book the down home feeling that my city offers. The story is described as a slow burn romance, but the only thing slow about this story is the characters realizing they are in love. Great job Millie!
The Garden of Eden is a story that takes place in The Big Easy, the beautiful city of New Orleans. It follows Eden, this super young and talented R&B artist who is trying to find herself and her passion for music again after obtaining the one thing she always thought she wanted; stardom, notoriety, and recognition. She's outspoken, with little to no filter when it comes to her feelings (which reminded me SO much of myself while reading). She knows what she wants and isn't shy about going for it. In some situations, her age clearly shows, and in others, she is wise beyond her years. All of this, almost a direct contrast to Andrew who deals with (not really) his demons—brought on by suffering a tragic loss during Hurricane Katrina as a teenager—by closing himself off so he doesn't have to face his feelings. He's very straightforward and direct, a result of having had to "grow up" at a very young age. Based on just these observations, you would think that Eden and Andrew would be like oil and water, but their chemistry from their very first encounter is off the chain and throughout the entire book, I just wanted them to GO for it...but at the same time, I enjoyed and relished in the slow burn.
The level of enjoyment I experienced while reading The Garden of Eden was definitely a surprise. I picked this book up because it is the February book of the month in the online book club that I am in. I read the synopsis, was immediately intrigued—read the prologue, was immediately hooked—got through chapter two and literally couldn't put the book down. Evidenced by the fact that I finished at 5:20 am this morning... Yes, it was THAT good. And I'm 28 now...that whole staying up until the sun rises, reading a book trick, is a thing of the PAST. But there were just so many things I loved about this book...
The Exposition—Millie Belizaire took her time setting the stage for this book, going beyond just the initial set up, and weaving the heart and soul of New Orleans throughout the entire novel. Into what the characters ate, how they spoke, the music, even the clothes they wore. I could feel and see the beauty of the city through the words on the page and it added so much to the experience of reading this book.
The Character Development—One thing I've found that authors tend to do in adult contemporary romance, is fail to really introduce you to their characters. When I'm reading a book about two people falling in love, I don't want to just read about them as a couple. I want to know about them as individuals as well. I want to know who they are before they begin to lose themselves in the inevitable whirlwind romance they will find themselves in. I want to know about their fears, desires, aspirations, and goals. I want to know what their favorite color is, their favorite ice cream flavor, their favorite food, past time, and hobbies. What are their pet peeves? What annoys them about their family members? Where do they work? What is their family is like? I like getting to know the characters I'm reading about, because then I'm more invested in their lives, and in turn, their happiness. It's much more entertaining rooting for a character you feel like you know and care about than it is for someone you know absolutely nothing about, other than the type of men they fall for. If I don't know who you are, why should I care if you find the love of your life?
I say all of that to say, the character development in this book was PHENOMENAL. I felt like I knew Eden and Andrew and not only them, but I go to know their family, friends and all the above, aforementioned things—I was fully invested, 100% engaged...ALL IN.
The Depth—The Garden of Eden isn't just a love story. It's also about family, faith and the lack thereof, pain, loss, passion, friendship, brokenness, trauma, music, culture, connection...I could literally go on and on. More than just how handsome and talented he is, we get to see how Drew deals with the loss he suffered as a child due to Hurricane Katrina and how that trauma resulted in the loss of his faith. More than just how well she can sing, we get to see how Eden deals with the pain of growing up feeling like she was unloved, never enough, second best, an afterthought. And ultimately, we get to see how those experiences shaped who they are, how those experiences affect how they navigate through life and how they interact with one another. Two seemingly broken people, falling in each other's paths and somehow being exactly what the other needed to begin healing.
I loved how Faith, played such a huge role in this book, but not in the way you would expect. This isn't a bible-thumping 'God will forgive all your sins' romance, shoving the word and different scriptures down your throat. While reading this book, you get to witness a character, A Pastor—in real-time, question the existence in God, his beliefs and the beliefs of those around him. But I never once, felt like I was being preached to or at.
Overall, I just loved this book. I rarely find a book that has all of the ingredients I'm looking for. Great plot, character development, fun dialogue, pacing, good writing, and a slow-burn done right. And all from a new author!
Finding these books always feels like a blessing and a curse for me. A blessing, because I get to lose myself in a story that I really enjoy for a few hours, find new characters that usually end up sticking with me for years to come, and potentially, a new author to add to my 'holy grail of authors list'. But also a curse, because then the bar for the next book is set so high—a bar that, 9 times out of 10, isn't reached.
I'm already thinking about scenes that I'll want to re-read from this book and I haven't even been finished with it for 24 hours yet...
Bravo Millie. BRAVO. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this author. If this is what she has to offer coming out the gate, I can't WAIT to see what she has up her sleeve for 2020.
If you can't tell already from this glowing review...I definitely recommend this book to any and everyone.
4.75 🌟 This was slow burn romance perfection with “Beyond the Lights” vibes and I absolutely loved it!!! I need all my slow burn romances to follow this exact format with this kind of angst, tension and character exploration. Millie Belizaire has yet to disappoint me and I will definitely be needing a physical copy of this book in my possession!
Eden and Drew were both complex and lovable MCs that I enjoyed learning about, from a past and a present standpoint. The way they slowly allowed themselves to fall in love with one another was sooooo beautifully heartwarming and believable without the need for numerous sexual encounters through the book for it to happen organically and deeply. Millie's writing style is so descriptive and well-structured that it honestly felt like I was watching a movie from beginning to end.
I only wish we got the much needed conversation between Eden and Nayeli, as well as Eden and her mother, but other than that, I have absolutely no complaints and already want to have a physical copy in my hands so I can annotate all the thought-provoking quotes. Millie Belizaire has solidified herself as one of my favorite authors, and I will/plan to read AND buy anything she writes!!! 1000% recommend this book for any and all romance book lovers!
This was an unconventional love story that was so refreshing. This author is still a newbie, but she can rival some authors that have been long established. Read my full review here:
Millie Belizaire is by far one of most talented new authors to hit the literary industry. She wowed us with her debut 'The Collide Series' and now the highly anticipated The Garden of Eden. You meet Eden a famous singer, fresh off multiple Grammy wins, yet she isn't the usual diva you would expect. Eden definitely has insecurities and mommy issues. Then there's Andrew aka Drew a Hurricane Katrina survivor. Drew is reliable, intelligent, independent, smart and complicated as hell... oh has daddy issues. In the beginning of the book, you would think these two characters would have nothing in common, but they say opposites attract. The story takes place mainly in New Orleans, post Hurricane Katrina. The way the author penned this lovely story is incredible. Both Eden and Drew had so much depth to them. The story was so descriptive and the characters were so raw and real. I loved how Drew associated people with color. I'm still trying to figure out my color 🤔 Anyway back to the review, LOL. Eden and Drew took you on a long journey. They both showed growth and definitely helped each other heal open wounds. This is definitely a love story, with minimal action/drama but it's so intense that you don't want to stop reading. The only thing I could have done without is the repetition as the story went on. Also towards the end of the book there seemed to be some typos. I have to say I'm a Millie Belizaire fan. She is a true storyteller and I have not read anything by her I didn't like. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to Millie's future releases.
Eden and Andrew!! ❤️❤️I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The way that the characters met and their love story was genius. This author has a way with words that really draws the reader into the story. The flow was great and it was really nice to see the characters growth. Eden was everything—witty and flirty but Eden really had to grow into herself. Everyone had an opinion of what she should be and it seemed they cared more about her image and brand. Eden almost lost me when she hid her secret from Andrew but she redeemed herself. I really love Andrew; his character was a bit dark and mysterious but he definitely grew on me once I learned his story. I think Andrew needed to let go of the baggage that he had with Anika and sadly with the church. As soon as Eden came into the picture, Andrew started living life again. Eden and Andrew were polar opposites on paper but had so much in common and really brought out the best in each other! They were just what each other needed. This story tugged at my heart strings for sure. It is definitely a must read!!
I almost DNF this book at 96%. I know that sounds crazy and ridiculous to consider DNF'ing a book at 96%, but it almost happened. When I say that I don't like my heroine to be young adults in my books I truly, genuinely mean that. Eden was 22 years old. And it showed. Especially in the last 20% of the book. I'm trying to extend grace to these young early twenties people because I too once was there (a looong time ago…ok, maybe not that long, but long enough) but damn it they make it hard. Because the way Eden behaved towards the end of this book was absolutely ridiculous. It was upsetting and highly frustrating. All that said, this was an absolutely amazing beautiful book. Poor Andrew, all I wanted to do the entire book was to hug him. He was so cryptic with Eden in the beginning, it was frustrating, but good at the same time. The church hurt was loud and sad. For somebody who did not believe in God, Andrew had such a shepherd's heart and he was such a servant. This was an excellent, excellent read. Highly recommend. This is my first book by Millie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I read this a few months ago and still occasionally think about it. Millie is undoubtedly one of the most purely talented writers I've come across in a long while. I liked this book even more than I did 'fast' and I loved that one. Complex characters, realistic dialogue, and an exploration of religion, sense of self, and past trauma are all present here. This is probably my favorite romance of the year. Whatever "next" is-- Millie got it.
This book was omg super duper amazing read. I loved it from beginning to end. Such a slow fulfilling and romantic burn delivered meticulously. I don’t think I will ever look at art and music the same as it was defined within the parameters of this book so detailed and defined. Drew and Eden was perfection at its best. They both embodied something so powerful and potent colors and sparks just flew right off the page. I definitely can’t wait for what’s next from this author
Amazing book. This was the first book I’ve read by this author. I saw this book on another author Instagram story(Bianca). The Garden of Eden: A romance Standalone has made my Sunday night.
OMG!!! Millie definitely delivered! The beginning started off slow but I understood that this book she wanted the readers to take note on every detail, every emotion, every color and every word Eden and Andrew was going through. I held my breath so much throughout the book because I didn’t know which way this author was gonna twist things. I’m so happy she chose the ladder lol. Every woman need a man like Andrew. He’s very honest and don’t lie to you even when you ask the toughest and most sensitive questions. I love everything about the New Orleans culture the author put in this book, to the food and culture she definitely did her homework. I definitely recommend this book and was so happy to see Lauren and Kain make an appearance. Readers definitely should check this out
Andrew & Eden's story was a true journey. I liked that we saw Andrew go from being an atheist to once again believing in some type of higher power. Eden's first encounter with Andrew was comical and so innocent. I loved how their relationship just evolved into something so beautiful. Eden's successful career didn't change the fact that she was lonely. Andrew's grief over his mother's death and his codependency with Anika made him a complicated soul. I loved how Andrew saw people as colors and how Eden's color tied in with the entire story. The topics covered in the story were grief, music, art, faith, insecurity, talent, voodoo, fraud, neglect, mommy/daddy issues, friendship, and so many more. Olivia was so lovely and her miracle moment was probably my favorite moment in the story aside from when she passed out in the car after meeting Eden. Overall this story was a refreshing read. I thought it had so many layers and it really spoke to me. I also liked how the story highlighted that Hurricane Katrina still haunts the survivors. I laughed out loud at the shots being thrown at Floridians and how we don't bat an eyelash at hurricane warnings. I really enjoyed this story!

My mother always went to New Orleans for a getaway when I was a kid. She never took me. I didn’t get to go until after Katrina. I never think about the before and after. How the people that lived there are traumatized by Katrina. Millie gave me a peek inside someone who does have the horror and the triggers from living in New Orleans during Katrina. I wanted to hold Andrew so badly. I wanted to make him my boyfriend. Millie had me all in with him. Then came along Eden and I was so sad for her over insecurities. I could not stop reading. I had to know these two were going to be okay. I couldn’t wait days to find out. Keep writing, Millie. You’re an artist, too!
My head is spinning. This was my first read by Millie Belizaire and I was literally on the edge. Out of all the characters, Olivia was and is my favorite. That little girl stole the whole book. I’m truly curious what made Sabina that freaking absentminded though. I laughed, ALMOST cried, and the anger was real. Bishop deserved something much more harsh than he almost got. But I understand that justice does not always prevail. But my God, my God! This was a good read. Selah
This was a well told story about black love. It smartly, touched on every theme important to black American couples; church, faith, blended families, mother - daughter relationships, dream chasing.... All well thought out, fully explored, with chemistry between Andrew and Eden. I will remember this heroin and hero.
I took a star away because it was slow at times but when it got juicy you forgot about the slowness . I enjoyed this love story because it expressed so much emotion that you felt like you was there . My first by this author it won’t be my last .
A sister reader suggested this book and boasted that it was a stellar read, I couldn’t agree more! Much like the flavorful and rich taste of gumbo that is comprised of a myriad of ingredients that make for an appetizing meal, this book appealed to my senses. The storyline was unique and complex but intricately woven.
The author spared no time or detail in depicting the hero and heroine but I especially appreciated the time spent developing Drew. It was amazing that although he was close to being an overly cynical pessimist, his heart and intentions were pure.
Eden, the insecure pop star was stripped down and all of her vulnerabilities were laid to bare but she was far from a victim and she was just the spark needed to ignite love and belief back into Drew.
I can go on and on about this story but there’s just too much that I am still processing and mulling over like the depravity of Bishop Lavigne, how good women often settle (i.e. Anika) and end up with the short end of the stick, or Sis. Katherine’s brain being ravished by dementia or how the Christian faith is often negatively polarized to be malevolent and self serving—these depictions of the black church are troubling and reinforce some of the skewed thinking that keeps many away. This is one sided conjecture is problematic for the faith.
However, none of that should distract from this powerful and compelling story that was a healing balm for the characters and readers alike! Read this one today.
So one year later after the collide series, we got another one and the sweetest, best Christmas gift ever, it's a standalone...yeahhhh love it... Eden, Eden, Eden... What a beautiful person. Well she had so many issues and all, but over all she was alright. Tried not to be too divaish, and demanding, and for that she looked to be letting people walk all over her, hence Nayeli, and mom, but she was actually very strong and not too spoiled for her status. Andrew, man could you be more complicated but still bae at the same time? Strong, reliable, independent, intelligent, and his own person, whom made this beautiful person... Man I want my own Drew please... Maybe I should go to NOLA and get me one. This was a beautiful story, a tad childish, a tad too long where the finale felt rushed and just too long into happening. For a year wait it was worth it, but would have prefer it to be more action than this sweet thing, yet it was perfect to have it come out now, for Christmas. Perfect, just perfect!!! Can't wait for the next one...
I have been anxiously awaiting “ The Garden of Eden” by Millie Belizaire, so of course I was super excited to dig in! The story alternates between Eden, an award-winning songstress, and Andrew, a pastor who struggles with his own faith. I really liked this book! The writing flowed effortlessly, and I was pulled in almost immediately. The characters were well-developed ( although Eden did cause my eyes to roll quite a few times lol). I loved the setting and I am definitely inspired to go visit New Orleans. Also, it touched on some important topics including toxic relationships ( even those amongst family and friends), faith, culture, and more. There were small things that kept this from being a five-star read. There was some redundancy. I also feel like it was a very smooth ride for the most part. I would have loved to see more issues resolved (especially when it came to Eden). Towards the end, things were moving very quickly. For fans of the “When Worlds Collides” series, it was definitely fun to get a quick update on some very lovable characters. Overall, this book was beautifully written and I really look forward to reading more from Millie Bellizaire in the future!
This is my first time reading anything from this author, I enjoyed this book greatly. It was different, however the message was very clear. We can have struggles via family, faith and come from different backgrounds and still be able to connect! Eden and Andrew story was so compelling because of the different background and their walk through life. Through all they ever wanted was to get past their insecurities and find love due to pressures of family and life, they were able to do so together. The boom touched on spirituality and beliefs as well. It speaks to how detrimental one incident can change your very being! Beautifully written! I will read another book by this author for sure!
I don't know how I found this book but evidently a story of two people living two different lives was something I was meant to read. I thought deandra Hughes posted it but either way it was a great read. You took two character carrying their own issues and brought them together which in its own way was a healing for them both. You saw the growth for each of them as the story line developed. I was so glad that the alleged best friend was no longer her assistant and hopefully not her friend either. She cared more about the life she missed on and this being the closest she would get to it
I knew I would love Drew and Eden the moment I read the first preview of them. Their love is so inspiring because it felt real. They honestly felt like people you could know. The premise is great and of course the story is written and executed perfectly. I could go on and on about how amazing this story is but what I’ll end off my review on is that Millie is seriously gifted with her writing skills. A true 5 out of 5 story, can’t wait to read the next one! ❤️
A very spiritual encounter of Andrew and Eden. Clearly not defined by the usual dynamics of a commitment, their relationship blossoms with its ups and downs. Unexplainable at first, yet to me it's more of a spiritual intimacy only experienced by a few. This was a very well written encounter. I loved the story and the characters were well developed. An emotional read with a lot of Biblical imagery interwoven in the storyline that added such a profound effect on the why Kudos to the author!
I absolutely loved this book. That darn Andrew was so lost after his mom. I liked how Eden didn't take no for an answer. She wore him down and he let her be her and not the pop star. Her assistant/best friend got on my last nerves. She was the epitome of never mix friend and family with business. Anika should've cut her losses and left it alone. I liked the length the details and all in this book. Great job
