Upara: An Outsider, an autobiography written by Laxman Mane, is a path breaking work in the Marathi literature, for its lively depiction of the life of the downtrodden and forceful style, authenticity of experience and its strong plea for social justice. The love-hate relationship between the author and his father, between his mother and father, between father and relatives, the intense love between the author and his beloved, the mute suffering of both the lovers, the cruelties of life, humiliation and feelings of anger, forbearance, compassion—the intertwining of all these elements gives the work immense vitality.

About the author

Laxman Bapu Mane (Marathi: लक्ष्मण बापू माने) (born June 1, 1949) is a Marathi writer and a social activist from Maharashtra, India. Mane came to sudden fame after publishing his autobiography Upara, (An Outsider), in 1980. Upara was considered as a milestone is Marathi Dalit literature and received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1981 and Padma Shri in 2009.

His autobiography Upara (उपरा) brought to the attention of the public in Maharashtra the problems of nomadic tribes arising out of their social and economic conditions. Under a two-year grant from the Ford Foundation for field work among nomadic tribes in Maharashtra, Mane wrote in 1984 his second book Band Darwaja (Closed door, 1984).

Mane converted to Buddhism in October 2006 and soon had many followers . His next book was ‘Palawaracha Jag’ and last year, he published a collection of letters he wrote to Supriya Sule, who is now a Lok Sabha MP from Baramati.

दलित लेखना चा उपरा हा एक छान नमुना आहे. पुस्तकात भटक्या लोकांची जीवनशैली व हालअपेष्टा दिसून येतात. लेखकाचे बालपण व आंतरजातीय विवाह केल्या नंतरचा संघर्ष ह्याबद्दल वाचण्यास मिळते. एकंदरीत चांगला पुस्तक आहे. फक्त
पुस्तक प्रमाण भाषेत नसल्यामुळे वाचनास वेळ लागतो.

this book shall provide you comprehensive account of struggles of Nomadic Tribes in Maharashtra in post-independence era esp.60s to 80s. much of those things have changed but few things are still there in society that ought to change.

उपरा - मी वाचलेले पहिले पुस्तक साधारण सन १९९९-२००० ची गोष्ट असेल आमच्या गावात महात्मा गांधी वाचनालय होते तेथून मी हे पुस्तक वाचायला आणले होते.मी हे पुस्तक वाचताना फार रडलो होतो.तेव्हा पासून वाचनाची आवड निर्माण झाली ती आज पर्यंत चालूच आहे.

शेकडो वर्षे बिऱ्हाड आपल्या पाठीवर घेऊन पोटासाठी गावोगावी फिरणाऱ्या मंडळीच दुःख आणि त्यांच्या समस्या आपल्या समोर या पुस्तकांमधून येत असतात...लेखकांनी अनेक गोष्टींवर भाष्य केलेलं आहे..जात-धर्म,जातीवाद,अंधश्रद्धा,रूढी-परंपरा,उच-नीच,गरिबी,आंतरजातीय विवाह,महिलांसोबत आपली वागणूक ,जात-पंचायती मधी चालणारे ते न्यायनिवाडे इत्यादी ....ही पुस्तक वाचत असताना मी अक्षरशः किती वेळा रडलो याच मला भान सुद्धा नव्हता..पुस्तक वाचत असताना मनामध्ये खूप वेदना होत असतात समाजाची चिड येते ..आणि जेव्हा लेखक व्याजाने कर्ज घेऊन नवसासाठी कोंबडे, बकरे कापण्याच वर्णन करतात तेव्हा तर किळस येते...समाजाची दुसरी बाजू आपल्याला या पुस्तकांमधून अवगत होते..उकांड्यावर तीन दगडाच्या चुलीवर मांडलेला तो संसार,दिवसभर गाढवामागं फिरणे,बा च दारू पिऊन आई ला मारणे,धान्य साठवण्यासाठी ची कनगी बनवण्याचं कार्य तो सुद्धा लोकांच्या शेतातून चोरून आणलेल्या फोकीने,लग्न कार्यात खांदे दुखोस्तर ढोलकी वाजविणे व उंकड्यावर वेगळ्या पंगतीत जेवणे, कधीकधी २-३ दिवस उपाशीच राहणे,अशिक्षितपणा,घर दार सोडून पोटासाठी वर्षभर भटकायचं आणि दसऱ्याला किंवा चैत्रीला घरी येणं व कर्ज घेऊन तो अंधश्रद्देपोटी केलेलं नवस फेडणे,आंतरजातीय विवाह केल्याने लेखकाच्या कुटुंबातील लोकांना वाडीत टाकणे,लग्न केल्यावर लेखकाचे व त्यांच्या पत्नीचे हाल इत्यादी प्रसंग वाचताना अंगावर काटा येतो..एकूणच समस्या,गरिबी आणि उपेक्षित लोकांच जीवन आपल्याला या पुस्तकातून कळतो..बस्स !!!

पुस्तक वाचल्यानंतर मला माझ्या आयुष्यातील सर्व समस्या खूपच क्षुल्लक व कमी वाटू लागल्या आहेत..एकदा नक्कीच वाचा..
