The Wolf We Feed

Rate this book
Set in Amleth, a rugged land divided by decades of bitter strife with a landscape and belief system heavily influenced by my time in Scandinavia. The Wolf We Feed is an action-packed fantasy adventure.

Tirith's life is turned upside-down when Drake, her twin brother, abandons her after they were raised and trained in isolation. Unable to live under the perceived tyranny of their grandfather, Drake sets off into the world looking forward to an adventure.
Arriving in the dystopian city of Náströnd, Drake finds a new mentor and becomes involved in a bloody coup to eliminate the city's ruling class.

Amid plots and counter-plots, conflict and betrayal a determined but uncertain young woman undertakes a treacherous journey to meet her father for the first time, overcomes racial bias in a foreign land, and learns the truth about her family's sinister past. What she discovers leaves her with no choice but to find her brother and attempt to save him from the violent life he has chosen.

But does he want to be saved?

THE WOLF WE FEED, a coming-of-age story about two siblings that face hard truths about where their loyalties lie...

The Wolf We Feed is the debut novel of author P A Sheppard – and what a great debut it is! I found it a thoroughly engrossing read and a great combination of fantasy and historical fiction. The plot is well constructed, with a gripping storyline and fast-paced action that immediately pulled me in and kept me reading, with many twists and turns along the way that added to the suspense.

Although set in the fictional land of Amleth, the general nature of the landscape is that of northern Scandinavia, with all its ruggedness and often inhospitable and unpredictable climate. It is a perfect setting for some of the rugged, ruthless and unpredictable characters we meet as the story unfolds – and there is certainly a fascinating cast of characters to be met, both good and bad.

The story focuses on the diverging routes taken by hitherto almost inseparable brother and sister, Drake and Tirith, following them through the ensuing events and emotional highs and lows that see them growing in strength and understanding of their own potential and ambitions in life. It is a story of good versus evil, with treachery and betrayal, and enemies and danger to be faced. But there is also comradeship, friendship and love to be found along the way. The climax of the story left me wondering how things would eventually play out between the brother and sister, and if a path, once taken, could ever be reversed.

I look forward to reading Book 2 in the series in order to find out.

I would recommend this book to readers of fantasy in particular, but there are also enough references to aspects of Norse mythology and the Viking lifestyle to appeal to historical fiction fans.

The Wolf We Feed is a good fantasy adventure with entertaining characters, a decent amount of action and trouble, and a couple of explosions that really made things quite interesting. I would say that this book stands above many of the others in its genre and that I would recommend it to potential readers. It was great fun to read and I really did enjoy it. Ready for book two!

This, ladies and gentleman, is how you write a debut novel.
The Wolf We Feed had me hooked from page one. I was immediately drawn into the story with great world building, and I was kept interested with the action. This was a well-paced novel that I read in a night.

I love the characters. Tirith and Drake’s storylines were fascinating. As children, training to be assassins to now, when everything is at stake. I loved the character archs and dialogue. It made it easy to get inside the characters’ heads.

The Wolf We Feed is a fascinating fantasy adventure that I didn’t want to stop. I’m impressed with P.A. Shepard’s writing and the fact that this is a debut. Highly recommended!

Want to read a story about simple life choices that can deviate two siblings' path drastically? You should read this book!

The Wolf we Feed is the first in the series of books about The Wolves Of Amleth, written in switching narratives by Tirith and Drake, who are twins. They have been brought up by their grandfather in the forest, occasionally meeting rangers and helping out other people who live there. However, this solitary living and strict regime of learning the art of fighting, has had different effects on the two. When coming of age, Drake decides to take his own path, leaving his sister behind. This acts as a catalyst to the chain of events that follow, and Tirith learns more about her family history, her father and the war that has been rekindling for many years now.

Fast-paced and heroic, with strong characters and a well thought out world, The Wolf we Feed has a number of messages to offer. Whether it is the position of women in the Hofarian society, or the choices imposed on and expectations of children because of their birth, the story offers an engaging narrative through Drake and Tirith. I look forward to knowing what happens next!

I am thankful to Paul Sheppard and the publisher for providing me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Stay tuned as I'll be adding links to my detailed thoughts on the book and the interview with Paul tomorrow!

What a fantastic read.
Really great plot line with the characters developing throughout the book, but especially Tirith & Drake becoming stronger and more independent as they progress.
Several subplots developed keeping me hooked and guessing where they were going to lead, whilst learning more about the different characters backgrounds.
You can tell by the end of this book there will be a sequel, although it ends on a solid ground unlike some that can leave on an annoying cliff hanger that can infuriate you.
Cant wait for the authors next book!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The character development was fabulous, especially with Tirith. So refreshing to find a strong female character who is capable of feeling and showing her emotions as well as kicking some serious ass. THE WOLF WE FEED is a roller coaster ride with interesting and sometimes brutal subplots. The side characters are well developed and the relationships between them are what brings this story to life. Overall, a very good book.

Amazing worldbuilding and charter development in this book. I really enjoyed the different perspectives that the author writes from and I would be hard pushed to choose a favourite character!

The book has good pacing throughout with a lot of gripping action sequences mixed in with interesting storylines.

Can’t wait to read the next one in the series when it comes out!

A fantastic debut novel in the fantasy genre. Compelling characters and a completely believable world make this book an exciting read. Together with a twisting plotline and great story arc, this novel is an excellent escape into a new universe. Would completely recommend. Five stars.

2 out of 5 Stars for a frustratingly disappointing tale riddled with error, convenience and inconsistency.

The author wastes no time immersing the reader; the action starts at sentence one with a pair of siblings training under their grandfather’s direction. Rather quickly after the session, they split up. The male answers an internal call to leave and takes the name, Drake. His sister, through calls of her own, takes the name Tirith.

From there, the POV alternates chapter to chapter from sibling to sibling. Initially, I found a preference for Drake’s side of the story. In opposition to his sisters simple badassery, Drake has potential trouble with his boyish charm and naive independence.

The story progresses...
There is fighting galore, a kerfuffle amidst guild masters, a near-death rescue, honor, strategy, and a declaration of change.

“The days of the thirteen families are over..”.

Throughout this time, Tirith and company were traveling by foot through tough terrain. (I love a good physical adventure scene!) When they reach their destination, a maddening encounter of injustices ensue. To me, it was this moment that Tirith’s character came alive and my prior preference for Drake leveled out.

Soon war is declared but it unfolds slowly as the focus remains on the many subplots, animals and characters (Udvir, love ‘em).

This book is so many things, action, adventure, coming of age, war, fantasy, and lots of drama with an ending that does not disappoint.

I like to save 5-star ratings for my absolute favorites and this type of novel hadn’t made it yet (personal preference for psychological fiction and romance). However, it would be unfair to rate such a wonderful debut anything less than 5 well deserved stars! Good read.

An intensely detailed world of Scandinavian mythology, replete with Shakespearean injustices and vengeful plots!

I had to click on the author's page to remind myself: didn't I recently read an epic sci-fi novella, similarly richly detailed, by the same guy (Terror Forming)? Yeah, I did! WTF??

Certainly an author to watch and a highly recommended adventure through norse mythology, to those whom this appeals <3

The Wolf We Feed' was a thrill from its first chapter to its last.

The novel centers around twins Drake and Tirith and the chapters switch between their perspectives giving readers a chance to get to know both characters. Raised by their grandfather, who has been preparing them for the moment they will meet their father, the twins find themselves at a crossroads when Drake grows tired of waiting and wants to set off on his own. This leads to a difficult decision that sets the twins off in opposite directions. When their paths cross again will they reunite as brother and sister, or face each other as enemies.

I loved this book from the start because its characters felt real. They were flawed, stubborn, loyal... and struggled to do what they believed was right. The author's narrative voice was well crafted, keeping the plot moving forward and the reader anxiously waiting for the twins to reunite, and dreading what might follow.

I look forward to reading where the next book takes the twins.

My favourite book so far this year.

"I loved this story so much I read it in two days, staying up until 3am because I wanted to learn the mystery behind one of the characters and what would happen to them.
Seeped with folklore and a great depth of history, this is a world you can really believe in and lose yourself in. The characters are complex and feel real, and I loved the slow unveiling of the relationships and pasts of the older characters. Plenty of actions and twist and written at a perfect pace. I can't wait to read more. (I hope there's more...)

A fantastic read- I couldn't put it down! I loved how the characters were introduced and developed throughout the book and how they are linked to each other all with their own secrets. A strong female lead who can hold her own in any situation! I can't wait for the next book... Fingers crossed we won't have to wait long!
