Instructions are crystal clear, but you don't learn too many styles and the ones they choose are really overused fonts that every Instagram influencer uses. I'd rather see the typefaces that modern calligraphers are using (and I follow several). So, if you want to learn influencer fonts — this book has you covered! That's just me, though. Whitney chose what she wanted and did a great job with them.
They do a great job of showing stoke direction and include practice sheets.
One thing I would have liked to see in this book was tips or discussion on pen tip pressure because that's critical. There is also no talk about other techniques like using color, splatter, diluted inks, etc. which is a shame because those are popular modern techniques.
I can't say I diligently followed the exercises and really committed to using this book - but I found it immensely interesting to read and have started incorporating some of the ideas and inspiration into my (very casual) lettering doodles and cards to friends. I've always like the physical act of writing and seeing letters on the page, but this helped me elevate some of my technique for more polished and intentional choices (such as when to thicken a line vs. keep it thin).
This book was a solid introduction to lettering but it's not a hobby for me. I tried it as a form of active relaxation and it didn't help with that for me. I didn't finish all the exercises because I lacked motivation. I'm glad I gave it a shot though.
