Vicki Cavendish knows she should be careful. After all, there's a killer loose in town—one who drains women of blood, women with red hair and green eyes just like her. She knows she should tell police about the dark, gorgeous man who comes into the diner every night, the one who makes her feel a longing she's never felt before. The last thing she should do is invite the beautiful stranger into her house.
Cursed to an eternity of darkness, Antonio Battista has wandered the earth, satisfying his hunger with countless women, letting none find a place in his heart. But Victoria Cavendish is different. Finally, he has found a woman to love, a woman who accepts him for what he is—a woman who wants him as much as he wants her...which is why he should leave. But Antonio is a vampire, not a saint. What is his, he'll fight to keep and protect. And Victoria Cavendish needs protecting...from the remorseless enemy who would make her his prey...and from Antonio's own uncontrollable hunger.
Two vampires chasing after the same woman, an innocent virgin. One wants her blood, one wants her love. Where have I heard this story before?? Oh yeah, the first book of the series. (Side note - what's with her obsession with green eyed women?? It's not a common color and it seems that every woman she's written about is green eyed.) I'll give it to her, this woman has a little more backbone than the other women in the series but absolutely no common sense. Vicki (Victoria) Cavendish is red haired and green eyed. She sees a mysterious stranger, Antonio Battista, leave the diner with 2 red haired green eyed women who later end up dead. The victims of a serial killing vampire. Still she ends up alone with him and inviting him in. She is warned repeatedly by several different people to be careful, lock her doors, don't invite strangers in her house... What does she do? Invite not one, not two, but three different strange men into her home. UGH! Honestly, I don't think this author is for me. I have no problem with the fluffy love stuff, but I'd like the women to have a little common sense. Why are all the women damsels in distress?? And they're all rescued by vampires, become vampires, and quit their jobs to be taken care of by their men. They give up the lives they wanted - "normal" lives filled with children and family to become kept women. Oh, and how come all these ancient, powerful vampires are so easily dispatched?? The women are weak, the bad guys are weak and the men are almost barbaric (both mortal and vampire) with their need to hunt, claim their women and provide for them. *Sigh* Not my cup of tea.
There were many things I loved about the story and equally as many I did not like. First I have to say that Duncan is the worst vampire hunter I've ever read. From the beginning we had to endure his pity party. It's a wonder he's still alive. I felt he was envious of his vampire best friend Ramsey. Ramsey was the best hunter ever. Vampires around the world had heard of him. Ramsey was turned, circumstances were never explained, he turned his love, Kelly, and they were truly happy. Duncan found out there were several murders of young women with red hair, drained of blood. He went to the small town to investigate. He realized this was the MO of the infamous Falco. Falco hated women with red hair. His fiancé, 600 years ago, cheated on him. He killed every, redhead he could get his hands on, before he was turned. Afterward, same obsession. It was thought that Falco was dead because a hunter said he killed him. Never explored why hunter lied. No one knew why Falco returned to this small town. Apparently, a victim of his got away. She was saved by Duncan's grandfather 70 years or so prior. They were in love, but she turned down Duncan's grandfathers because he was a hunter. The older victim, Mrs. Heath, stayed in the small town. Vicky was one of the red heads in the small town. She was warned by Antonio, a stranger in town, to be careful. Did she heed his warning. No! She repeatedly parked her car behind the restaurant where she worked, in the dark parking lot. She worked late hours, not requesting a schedule change. She walked home in the dark. Invited a stranger into her home. Kept windows and doors unlocked. An idiot. Absolutely! She had been warned by the police, the vampire hunter and warned by the stranger. Do you think she was kidnapped? Hell yeah. Idiot. So ludicrous. Now our fearless hunter Duncan would not be out done in the idiot department. While sitting in the restaurant,Vichy waited onhim. Duncan realized he was lonely and vampires were getting all the women. Saw Vicky and decided she's cute and asked her out. Even though she had invited the stranger, Antonio, in her house, and kissed him, she decided to accept Duncan's invite. She has now learned that Falco has set his sights on her. He follows them on their date. Follows them back to her house. She spots him outside while she's making coffee, screams and Duncan runs outside to kill the vampire. At night. When Falco is at his strongest. Well Falco knocks him out with a rock. Really? Antonio, saves the hunter, Duncan, from Falco. While Duncan is eating in the restaurant, having a pity party, he meets Bobbie Sue. Vicky's best friend. Thinks she's cute and asks her out. She asks if he's going out with Vicky, but accepts. In the meantime, Falco is stalking Vicky and killing redheads throughout the county. While our fearless hunter has decided it may be time for a career change because he sucks at his calling and it's his turn to get a women damn it. Even though it's a ridiculous roller coaster ride, I could not stop reading because I absolutely loved Antonio. The writing seemed a bit repetitive throughout the book. And sometimes Vicky was quite juvenile in her thought process. For me, Antonio kept me there.
Vicki only wanted a normal life going to work and back home. There was a dark handsome stranger that would come in sit in here section. That get her attention, and three females that got their blood drain from their bodies. Antion was passing through small Pear Blossom town stopped in the dinner and saw Vicki wanted to protect her as he felt the killer still in town. As he is an old Vamper felt Vicki woken his heart up. Tom who went to the small town after he heard about the 3 females who was drained of their blood. As he is a vamper killer. Tom met Bobbi Sue Vicki's friend who their worked together. Ended up Falco is an old vamp who likes draining females with green eyes and red heads as Vicki matches his likes. It takes Tom and his vampers hunter's friends who helps Antion to stop Falco killing spree.
I have read several stories by Amanda Ashley, and enjoyed them very much. I loved this story as the woman had to decide whether to become a vampire or never see the man she loved again...
In a small town in the heart of America, the heroine waitresses in the local diner when the handsome and mysterious hero begins showing up. He sits in the furthest corner, in the shadows and doesn't order anything other than coffee but never drinks it. He tells the heroine that he's there for her pleasant company and is sure to see her home safety after every shift, whether she's aware of him or not.
In fact, he spent every available moment either with the heroine or watching her in the shadows to protect her from the crazy serial killer vampire. I kind of liked the fact that he wasn't entirely good at protecting himself as he almost always came away with a serious wound after every battle. I doubt know. I found that to be humbling that though he's immortal, he wasn't all powerful. The heroine has a small-town mentality so I didn't much mind her naivety or willingness to let strangers into her house. She's trusting to most people and is generally calm and okay with a lot of things that would have put up red flags with me and any normal girl. I was even willing to ignore the fact that she lets the hero watch over her in her sleep, though he's a total stranger and it's super creepy.
The fact is that's she young and ignorant of the dangers of strangers. I couldn't imagine inviting a man into my house when I catch him watching me through the window or stalking me where I work but the heroine was very open and welcoming regardless of the fact that a man is killing people in her small town and the hero was last seen with them. But like I said, it's sort of forgivable for the heroine not to freak out and call the cops because she comes from a place where you don't lock your doors and will give a stranger the clothes of your back in good faith.
I did enjoy this book and I think it was because the hero wasn't obnoxiously angsty or depressed. Yes, he's the traditional dark and brooding vampire of lore but he's charming and protective and able to laugh at himself and enjoy life as much as he can. (He enjoys watching bad vampire movies-just a hint into his character). One thing I really and truly grew to hate was the fact that he shrugged after question posed to him but hey, it's not his fault he was written to have that annoying habit. Overall, I will say it was an ok book. I liked the fact that though the heroine is extremely religious, she's not judgmental and never thinks the hero is evil being what he is. It's typical to have that religious belief be a condemning factor and I was happy to see that wasn't the case here. The pacing was just exciting enough to keep things interesting and I liked both the main character and the supporting cast.
This was the way a vampire/human love story should go.
With a maniac vampire on the loose in Vicky Cavendish's little hometown and is targeting red-heads she knows she's in serious danger.
When a dark, mysterious stranger begins coming into the diner while she's working and begins walking her home at dark, she can't help the attraction she feels towards him.
Antonio Battista has been the walking undead for over 600 years. He's never meet a human who immediately took his attention. When Vicky begins being targeted more and more, he's steady by her side.
One of our well known characters from the series is back. When Tom Duncan learns of the killing spree, he immediately knows the vampire he's dealing with. Dimitri Falco. Coming into the diner, Tom meets Vicky and her friend Bobbie Sue.
Now, with a vampire hunter is town, it isn't long before Vicky learns the truth about Antonio. Like most, Vicky takes the news as a blow and isn't sure how to continue. Luckily, during the time Antonio gives her to consider what she wants, she discovers she wants him in her life.
So, now they begin their relationship that is doomed not to last, yet their love grows. But they can't let their feelings make them forget the danger that is upon them.
After not making much headway, Tom calls in Edward Ramsey, former vampire hunter and now vampire, to help.
Soon they have a plan and after it's success, the threat is gone, but their solution for their relationship is not. Deciding it's better to leave before they grow even more attached, he bids her goodbye.
As months go by, Vicky can't seem to get Antonio out of her mind, nor her life back to normal. The same goes for Antonio who now finds the nighttime a struggle to get through.
Finally deciding what she wants, she arrives on Antonio's door, wanting to be changed. Now, there together forever.
*Throughout the book, Antonio was always respectful of Vicky. Her and his friendships were enjoyable to read about. I loved all the characters.
Vicki is a red-haired waitress in a small town where a killer vampire that likes to eat red-haired women stopped for some snacks. Another vampire, Antonio, shows up too. Oh, and don't forget the vampire hunter. Busy little town. So, everyone tells Vicki not to let strange men into her house. To be on the look-out for this killer. To be smart. Instead she lets two strange men into her house, and then runs off with one for awhile, because he's just so darn adorable or something. Fighting. Sex. Happy ending.
This book is good. Not my favorite read, but I didn't hate it. Take that how you will.
A vampire romance with a really "nice" vampire hero. He's courteous, respectful, chivalrous, and just down right "the vampire next door." However, too nice can often times be too boring..Unfortunately, I am a reader who takes her vampire "black," if you know what I mean. The heroine came in the same flavor, a little too vanilla. I did find the plot rather interesting, at least enough to earn a 3-star rating. I am decidely neutral on whether I would recommend this book. It's a definite take-it or leave-it attitude.
This was a good story overall but there were a few holes, missing details and unfinished story lines. I did like the plot and the writing was good enough. I was a quick read and held my attention. I loved the characters but I wish Mrs. Heath hat more of a role. She is a quirky old woman who I could have enjoyed a bit more. I really liked that Antonio carried a bit of his "OLD" self, in his speech, to the present day. I do wish I knew where he got his income from, Tom too for that matter. And the cherry on top was Lady Katherine. I really liked her.
Desire After Dark I have not read the trilogy in order, meaning I started with this one. So far it seems like a classic Vampire Story, it seems to fallow the original mythology for vamp stories, Like The Vamp wears all black can turn into mist, has an adverseness to the Christian cross,& falls in love with the innocent girl of the story.
When I first started reading this book I just couldn't get into it. So I took the book slowly until about half way through when it just hooked me. After I got hooked I could not put this book down. I ended up staying up late into the night to finish it. I loved all the suspense throughout it. It was a well written book. Coming in from not reading the first two in this series I definitely wasn't confused.
This book is amazing! When I first started reading it I started to think of TRUEBLOOD/ Sookie southern mysteries because of the setting and so on… you’ll see. However it got into its own story. If you pick it up you will see what I`m talking about. I could not put this book down, there was so much suspense and it very well written. GO OUT AND GET IT!
I think this story must have been written a long time ago. The heroine is very naive and at times does things that make no sense. Like give her best friend details on where her vampire boyfriend lives despite the fact that the friend has a vampire Hunter living with her. !!!
here is my favorite book ever. Antonio Battista is totally amazing and mysterious. i loved how he tried so hard to control his thirst to protect Vicky Cavendish when he couldve let his thirst out and taken her everytime he had the chance which was like every night.

~Sexy vampires, dangerous devotion, unparalleled romance—no one does desire after dark like bestselling author Amanda Ashley. Now, in her enthralling new novel, she explores a passion as smoldering as it is risky...
Amanda Ashley is a brilliant writer!!! Not your stereotypical vampire romances, she adds twists to the story that defy expectation. Character, scenes, emotions are well drawn out and who doesn't love romances where both male and female are strong characters worthy of being named the hero?
i thoroughly enjoyed it. A dark stranger comes into town and just happens to be seen walking with two females who later end up dead. A killer going after women with red hair green eyes draining them of their blood. This book is filled with suspense and a good book for anyone.
