Birth of Heavy Metal #8

All’s Fair In War

Rate this book

For a merc company, better pay is...better, right?

Not necessarily.

Born from the fertile imagination of bestselling author Michael Anderle…

Heavy Metal has benefited from promo videos, but unfortunately, someone figured out that some of the driving during the Russian Base operation...

Was just too damned good.

People are noticing that Sal and his team have someone extra-special working with them, and they want a piece of her…or all of her.

What is the other team willing to attack Sal's people with to get what they want?

And do they have capabilities Sal can’t conceptualize?

When your enemy has the upper hand, there is no telling what you might share your space with to win. Sal is going to find out.

NOTE:  There may or may not be gratuitous sex in this book. Or it might actually play into a later book with funny talk about men vs. women's abilities and capabilities. There is ABSOLUTELY cursing in this book. LOTS of upset cursing, cursing out of anger, fear, and other emotional issues related to carnivorous alien flora or fauna eating humans who don’t say ‘darn.’ LOTS of gratuitous cursing just because the author finds it funny, too. There is death and sadness...and more death. In fact, it’s a blender of blood out in the ZOO. Man vs. alien nature seems to justify ugly results. Plus, people have emotional hang-ups. Expect to smile, laugh, cry, and perhaps have a spate of jealousy or two. Further, there might be explicit sex, thank-you sex, and you're-welcome sex. Finally, there is no Coke in the ZOO.  That is probably the worst and most offensive trait in these stories. This is Michael Todd, and I approve of the shenanigans pulled within the ZOO stories.

This wasn’t one of my favorite Heavy Metal books. There wasn’t anything wrong with it but for some reason I just didn’t connect as much with it as with other the book. It was still a wild ride, monsters to kill, the Zoo is still a threat and now the AI is expanding. Overall it was okay

This book, as is usual for any of the ZOO series, was full of a huge amount of fire-fights, in between fun, laughter, spying, and other shenanigans.

In book eight, the main protagonist seems to be a strange AI, built into the body of a Combat Suit, and which seems determined to kill off every single member of the Heavy Metal Militia.

Strangely, though, it seems determined to take away their VI, Connie, and in any way it could, at the same time.

But it, and the many Mercenaries who seem to have been hired as it's support team, just don't seem to realise who, and what, they are up against, while aiming at the premier team of the ZOO.

There were plenty of characters weaving in and out of this story, with most of them meeting up to either kill, or be killed, or to join the Heavy Metal team.

But, despite not knowing why they are being targeted, or by whom, fortunately, Heavy Metal, have their VI, Connie, keeping a watch over them all, and their Russian tech expert, Anja, is there, as usual, to help guide and protect them all in the twists and turns of life as a Private Mercenary Company.

The next book of the Birth of Heavy Metal series, is book nine: More Time to Kill but, as I'm reading the ZOO series chronologically, I'm actually going to go straight on to the next series: Cryptid Assassin, with: Hired Killer, Book One of the series, as my starting point.

I really want to know what's going to happen next for Sal, Madigan, Courtney, and their team of amazing, and very diverse, employees, but it seems I need to develop a little more patience! Lol

So, I'm off to make a start on reading this new book, and I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!

A series centered around the"ZOO".Don't know why that's in quotes? Whether you do or don't, you're in for a great ride.

Yep, whole danged series was great. Lots of interesting combat action and interaction with all the characters. An important part of writing, especially in a series, is bringing them to life to the point where their actions draw you in because you somehow find yourself caring. Todd and Anderle are masters at this and the whole series read will have you existing on two hours of sleep a night.

8th installment kept my attention

Life in the Zoo , don’t think I would last past the main gate. the basic plot line of an ever evolving alien attempt to plant life on earth keeps me interested with enjoyable characters to do the adventures for us.

Great new threat

A new threat and something that could bring outside influences home and abroad into play is always good as is this new story.
Just too short i find as the story gets so interesting and then the book is done.

Don't take an AI to the Zoo

Another spectacular addition to the series and I can't wait to read more from this storyline.

Didn't enjoy this last book as much as previous ones in the series. Maybe I'm just getting bored with them, maybe the author was bored also.

A good story!!

What! Monsters are not enough? Now you are bringing in androids for the good guys to fight. Still good action, good people interaction. There was a word error that jumped out at me near the front of the story, oh I remember. You mentioned a 45 caliber mini gun.. Unless it's a whole new build, the 45 caliber is usually a pistol round. Or it has been, for the last one hundred years it's usually associated with the Colt 1911.

Chuckle-itis.

There's gotta be a story to the prodigious use of a certain c-word. An inside joke? Michael just doesn't mess up the story flow. Ever. But the constant use of chuckle, chuckles, chuckled, chuckling, etcetera got downright disruptive. I actually stopped reading and did a search. Counted over 40. One faux pas: The enemy mercs recognized the open market Hyde suits right away. So manufacturer identity shouldn't have been a mystery?

And yet, this is one of those series I really enjoy.

Once again BOHM is still the best of the Zoo.

This is like having your favorite dessert, one you eat to fast, and you know you'll be sorry because there is none left for later. I devoured this book and I want more. It is another fast paced adventure with more bad guys after our best Zoo friends.

Just couldn't

Couldn't give this book 5 stars. It was a good read , but something about it felt different than the other books in this series. Finally decided on 4.4 stars. Well worth reading , and better than most other authors out there produce . I recommend this , just can't help feeling something was missing in this book.

What next?

We see Heavy Metal tested by a new adversary, and they don’t disappoint. Another excellent instalment with heaps of action, smart mouth comments, and hilarious one liners. As always, Michael has left me itching for the next book.

Highly recommended..

I do love this series, it has a little of everything and a lot of the best stuff. The characters are great, the story keeps on getting better - all written with style and panache. I look forward to more.
