H7N9: The Complete Series

Rate this book

A deadly influenza pandemic.

An escaped convict.

A single mother desperate to protect her only child.

As the insidious virus cripples society, providence brings two survivors together in an unlikely partnership to survive in a world fraught with chaos.

In a small poultry farm located in Delaney, Georgia an antigenic shift causes the H7N9 virus—also known as the deadly bird flu virus—to jump species. The contagion burns through everything in its path despite the federal government’s ham-handed efforts to mask the mutated virus’ true nature. Its unprecedented mortality rates soon paralyze the nation—paving the way for martial law to be established across the country.

Over a thousand miles away at a maximum security penitentiary south of Tucson, Arizona, Inmate Teddy Sanders’ world of structure and routine crumbles to dust, as the virus starts spreading within the confines of the prison’s walls.

As circumstances force Teddy to step out of his comfort zone and form precarious new alliances, will he be able to adapt and survive or will he succumb to the inherent dangers of the new world?

Contains all three books in the H7N9 Series: Penitence, Absolution, and Pilgrimage.

Wish I could love...... D U L L ......

This is a book I wanted to love. Thought I would really get into. Then as I went along, I hoped more and more it would improve and I could like it.
As they say in real estate, the story has “good bones.” Meaning the solid architecture is there, ready to be remodeled into something awesome. The basic premise is really cool, but the world built inside the prison is grey and colorless, uninspired, and therefore becomes tedious to read fairly quickly. It feels as though the prison world has been created from popular stereotypes and - well, that’s it.
It’s also very ... one dimensional. What one can see. There are no locks or doors clicking or clanging, guards laughing, a roaring unit full of never ending voices. No view beyond the person or thing immediately in front of the character. And the worst - telling us, not showing us. Urgh.
The main character, as well, I really wanted to like him. Be in his corner and be his ride or die for the duration of the series. But as soon as I realized I just really didn’t care what the heck happened to him (or maybe, he might even be better off if someone did actually shoot him right between his dull eyes) ... I knew this story was doomed for me. I should just pack it in.
Something I rarely ever do.
The main character is simply - bland. Once again here, a one dimensional experience- caused by the main character never being emotional. Even when he’s killing someone or eating breakfast. And - it’s not that “calm, cool and collected” dude thing going on. Nor the emptiness of a serial killer. It’s just empty writing.
“I’m punching someone. I’m forking in eggs. I’m going to escape. She’s a bit*h. I’m so happy. I hate this place. Run. This hurts. I’m killing him.” On and on. To be fair, I did read ONE awesome emotional five sentence section when his buddy died. I did feel that. Only authentic moment I found.
All the characters are the same. They put their stiff one size fits all “character suits” on. And that’s that. A lot of stereotyping here as well (“little boy, age 6,” etc).
I definitely do dislike leaving negative reviews as I appreciate the monumental effort, dedication, and love that goes into creating writer’s work. I have only left a half dozen or less negative reviews in as many years? That said, I base my reading choices 90% on reviews, so I try to be honest.
Maybe this series gets better (somehow?) after the 1st book? Up to you if you want to give it a go or not. For me, it’s all a pass.

Completely Unexpected

I was fascinated by this book from the beginning. I rooted for a happy ending for Teddy, even though he was a criminal, but then so was most of the surviving world. The ending was a big surprise and I found this book to be the opposite of a cliche and a refreshing if a bit depressing viewpoint. I recommend it.

Great read during COVID-19

Great read especially when most of the US & many other countries are in some sort of quarantine or some sort of stay at home orders due to Covid-19. But definitely not for the weak of heart. The series certainly made one think! Great ending never saw that coming!

H7n3

It was interesting but there were no " good " days. One crisis after another the entire book. I'm not sure I could recommend this book
