Hallowed Woods Academy: Semester 1

Rate this book
My name is Sadie Goodwin and from the time I was ten, I could do strange things, things I couldn't explain. When my mother was taken from me and institutionalized, all I wanted to do was run away from my foster families and get back to her.

That all changed the night I was chased through the streets by men carrying wands. That's right. Wands. Cornered, I had no way out until a handsome stranger named Lucas Hanley helped me. Now, I've come to learn that my strange ability isn't so strange because I am a witch.

Taken in by Hallowed Woods Academy, a school for witches and wizards, I am determined to learn how to cast spells to protect myself, which is much harder than I ever expected. There, I have to avoid the Misery Twins, figure out if the flirty conjurer is actually into me and decide if I can trust a wolf.

Armed with only my diary and a pendant with the school's logo engraved on it, I must figure out why my mother kept my heritage a secret before my new friends are pulled into my fight.

Hallowed Woods Academy: Semester 1 is a YA Paranormal and Fantasy Romance Reverse Harem.

Note there is mild violence and language.

Her mother was institutionalized and Sadie’s life became a revolving door of foster homes. She knew she was different, could do things “normal” humans couldn’t, but it wasn’t until the night she was cornered by men wielding wands. Was she losing her mind? Rescued by a handsome stranger, Lucas, Sadie falls into a rabbit hole of magic beyond her wildest dreams, or nightmares.

Now part of the Hallowed Woods Academy, the spirited and determined Sadie will learn who and what she is, a powerful, yet untrained witch. She will also learn that even in a school of magic, there are the bullies and the bullied and she refuses to become their victim. Neither will anyone else if she can help it.

As if meeting Lucas wasn’t enough, another magical creature has taken a liking to her, but can she trust a wolf?

Tabitha Barret’s writing is perfect for young adult reading! Filled with teen attitude, the bravado of youth, and a girl who is determined to stand up for herself and those she cares about, even as her heart is pulled in more than one direction and she has no idea who she really is.

Quick reading, nothing too deep and never a dull moment, a wonderfully entertaining read! HALLOWED WOODS ACADEMY: SEMESTER 1 is YA fantasy at its best!

I received a complimentary copy from Tabitha Barret! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Ever since I read Pearl this book was on my wishlist and since I "had" to spend 20 dollar to get my 5 dollar voucher (still waiting) I decided to just get this book yesterday. And since Thursday is always the busiest workday of the week I needed a light and short read so I could finish it within a day. This book was therefore absolutely perfect!

It was of course amazing to see Celeste before we meet her in Pearl. In this book she's a side character, but one with a big role, which surprised me. It's however Sadie stealing the show. Sadie is the kind of character we secretly all want to be. All of a sudden she discovers that she's a powerful witch, she gets to go to an old and amazing school and there is a group of mysterious strangers trying to get her killed.

In a way it sounds kind of cliche and honestly, I think it is. But, sometimes that doesn't matter. Especially because the mythology of this world and the conflict is quite interesting and something I don't think I personally read before. The two types of magic are much alike and yet different enough for people to fight over. And although Sadie is special, she's not the only one and for sure not a chosen one either. Watching her figure things out was quite amusing.

I think the book would have been even better if the author had dared to make it a little longer. A lot was happening and told in a few pages and with a little more time and a little more details I think the story would gain a little more depth and would therefore become even more interesting. However, I do like that the three guys are slowly introduced and that there are dates and conversations. Even without the details I liked their chemistry.

I'm excited, despite its flaws, to read the next installment!

Action from the jump!

Nothing like running for your life to find out you’re a witch. But that’s what happens to Sadie Goodwin, and suddenly she finds herself a student at Hallowed Woods Academy.

Sadie likes the idea of a place to live and being protected, but how protected is she when people keep breaking into her room setting trap spells?

To add to things Sadie has to deal with mean girls and 2 super cute guys who like her. And who’s the wolf that says he’s known her forever, because he’s pretty hot too!

Tabatha Barrett has set readers up for one heck of a ride with the Sadie Goodwin Chronicles!!

Hallowed Woods Academy: Semester 1

This is the story of how Sadie Goodwin came to Hallowed Woods Academy.

Sadie is a runaway from the foster care system. Her mother was put into a mental institution & died there. One night Sadie leaves a diner & is attacked by 3 men. While running for safety, a young man saves her.

He catches up to her & he tells her his name is Lucas. And he has a pin that looks exactly like her mother's necklace. She goes with him to HWA & a new adventure begins.

Casters and Conjurers

Sadie is on the run. But from who, she has no idea. She's been having some wonky things happening. She is rescued and brought to a magic school by Lucas. The Headmistress welcomes her, but she keeps getting attacked. Mr Heckler, a Guardian, teaches her some advanced spells she uses to figure out who is after her. If you like witches and academy stories, this should be on your TBR!

Need a quick, easy read that’ll also keep your attention and leave you wanting more? Well this book is for you. Sadie is a sweet, strong, young girl trying to figure out the world she has just been thrust into while also trying to uncover her stolen memories. I can’t wait to delve into the next book and discover exactly what is going on.

Take note that this is a YA book And if you don’t enjoy younger, innocent high school sweetheart type books, this might not be for you. I’d definitely recommend it to under 18yr olds to read based off this 1st book.

Wow! What a book. The first chapter starts with a chase scene and poor Sadie doesn’t even have a clue why she’s being chased. And the action keeps on coming. Sadie knew she was different, but she never thought she was actually a witch. This is the first book in this series and I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

I enjoyed the story. Sadie takes no crap and flies in the face of bullies to help her new friend, Celeste. Sadie has no idea who or what she is, that magic is real, or why her Mom was institutionalized or died. Lucas offers her a chance to learn about her abilities, her mom, and a place to be safe - something she's not known in years. Aleksi is cute and offers her a chance to see the other side of magic. And who is the secretive Dominik?

This story ends on a cliffhanger and sets up for a spin-off story, and I look forward to both!
