Ethan Sacks is a writer and journalist from New York, who is currently writing the ongoing series Star Wars- Bounty Hunters for Marvel as well as other various Star Wars titles. He is also know for his Marvel works that take place in the iconic Old Man Logan wasteland, Old Man Hawkeye and Old Man Quill.
The "Old Man-iverse" aka the Wastelands has been so much more perplexing than it seems at first glance. The premise was simple - all the bad guys coordinated and attacked at once and won.
It started with Wolverine: Old Man Logan and was a tidy story. This occurred in the Earth-807128 reality. Tracking the realities wasn't part of the original plan, but here we are.
The story picks back up with the rest of the series:
There's newer connecting material in Wastelanders. These stories seem to have been released to do a little cross-promotion of the Wastelanders podcast series and fill in a few gaps.
Finally, there's a coda with Avengers of the Wastelands. That's all I could find on the comics, except for a few implied appearances of Wolverine as the Hooded Man that ran around with the Fantastic Four.
New medium, new reality. The interconnected series of podcasts started being released in June 2021 with Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord. These stories are loosely connected to the comic books, and are designated as taking place elsewhere. They are independent of the comic book even though they have the exact same premise.
All I can say is if you care about all the details make sure you have a fan wiki handy. If you don't, then it's easy to just enjoy these for what they are: entertainment, baby.
The Guardians need the Ultimate Nullifier to keep the Universal Church of Truth at bay. Only one problem. There are no Guardians left and Peter's f%$&$ing crazy. We get more details filled in on the fate of the FF in the Old Man Logan universe.
Did I mention Starlord is nuts? Interesting way to conclude the series. I'm sure they're going to come back and tell us more.
The last volume of Old Man Quill addresses the concerns I had about the other Guardians and does it extremely well. From there though the book was very muddled. The time travel was a little wonky and the antagonists were too one-note. I wished there was more from the Universal Church. The art was subpar. Overall, an average read with a nice twist.
Part 2 picks up right at the end of part one, with Quill and the Guardians preparing to head into the wreckage of the Baxter Building, the last known whereabouts of the Ultimate Nullifyer, the only weapon known to stop Galactus. After an encounter with some Moloids, the Guardians head back up to the surface to see who is trying to pursue them. Gladiator and some Shi'Ar agents complain that it's a waste of time for them to fight against just one person....It is then revealed that Quill is actually all alone and he's been imagining the team with him. Knowing he stands no chance, he flees back into the building to get the Hulkbuster Armor, which allows him to hold off til Viv Vision and her crew arrive. The time travel element gets thrown here, so Quill must go back to retrieve the weapon from the Fantastic Four during our time. More time hijinks and an attack by Doom... leaves Quill on Earth, Ultimate Nullifyer destroyed, Galactus arriving, and hope almost lost. Quill fires a green shiny bullet he's been holding onto for a while and it kills Galactus... as it was a fragment of the Time Stone. (Sounds complicated, but the comic makes it clear and straightforward.) Quill decides to head back in to space to continue to combat the The Church, and restarts the Guardians with Beta Ray Bill, Moondragon, Nova, and Nebula.
A quick, two Volume run, that was pretty good. Glad I read it. Fun, quick read. Recommend.
Yet another "Old Man" title from Marvel. This always felt like the biggest stretch in what already felt like a superfluous line of titles. I'm giving it 3 stars. I don't think it's written poorly or that the art is bad, but it just doesn't ever justify its own existence beyond Marvel trying to sell more books with the same old gag . Old Man Logan and Old Man Hawkeye were premises that kind of made sense? But taking Peter Quill to Earth in an attempt to fit him into this universe was quite a leap in logic. This second volume brings the series to a conclusion. Time to let "Old" things die please Marvel.
Old Man Quill ends better than it began, but not by much. The early revelation that certainly caught me by surprise and added a needed touch of pathos to the affair. Otherwise, epic battle scenes continued apace and time travel (*sigh*) became an important plot element. This volume felt like a conclusion to the larger Wastelands narrative, which is odd considering Old Man Logan is still roaming around.
So, this is a pretty enjoyable. It's the first truly compelling version since the original Old Man Logan. I feel Old Man Hawkeye was fairly unnecessary other than some table building, and delving into the plot that killed the Avengers.
The first volume was fine; but it really revs into gear with Vol. 2; the twist regarding the Guardians makes it more harrowing and relatable to Logan. It also does development on the cosmic side.
A způsob sejmutí finálního bosse? Dost trapný =/
Second book was even better than the first. Turns out the Guardian were ghost, or Quill just crazy. Quill takes out Galactus with an old six shooter and a piece of the time stone.
Same solid storyline with fun callbacks to the space side of the Marvel universe, but this time the twist with Starlord caught me off guard and had me digging back through the first volume. I feel like it really elevated the story and added some nuance to Old man Quill.
So I definitely enjoyed Vol. 2 better than Vol. 1. I was not expecting the plot twist in the book. After that, I was sad for Quill. But, besides that, I enjoyed everything it had to offer.
Great Ending as we learn more about the Universal Church of Truth, the fate of the Guardian's of the Galaxy and the fate of Earth. We also get to learn the fate of the Fantastic Four on the day of the Villains. Great short story arch. I love the Old Man series!
Just read the news that Diamond Press is stopping comic book printing effectively putting the entire comic book industry on indefinite hiatus. I hope this isn't the last comic I read. Excelsior
