Well that was a fail for me… I should say that I have never really cared for The Oz universe in general, and this comic is essentially “the books” so the fact that I was bored out of my mind doesn’t all come from the comic itself. I also found the second story so misogynistic and kept wondering if the author could have played with that notion and subvert it somehow. But no. It was just really unpleasant to read for me.
I still give it one star because the drawings are INCREDIBLE. I loved this aspect so much, the visual beauty of it was simply stunning. ❤️
This may be the first graphic novel adaptation I've come across that has slower pacing than the books on which it's based. Fun artwork though. I respect that the author obviously wanted to create a very faithful adaptation, but I think some of the dialogue could have been cut down to streamline the story for better sequential storytelling.
This is actually just the first two books in the series: the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Marvelous Land of Oz. I love this version. Skottie Young's renditions of the characters and the world is whimsical and original, with that familiar feeling. I know the story, and this feels like it, but it's also like seeing Oz completely anew.
This book is a graphic novel version of the first two stories in the Oz series. The land of Oz is always fun. I don’t like the second book in the series as much because there is no Dorothy. Also, there are some real strong gender stereotypes (to be expected of the time period) that I don’t dig.
Beautiful graphic novel. It was really cool getting to read the graphic versions of the stories, having read the original novel last year and Land of Oz earlier this month. The art is gorgeous (love Skottie Young!) and the storytelling is extremely faithful.
One nitpicky thing... Though I understand why you'd want to draw Jack Pumpkinhead with varying facial expressions, it seems an odd decision when still including multiple examples of text from the book that make it clear his smile is carved onto his face and never changes, regardless of what he's saying or what's going on.
I really enjoyed these however, I think it is a case of bad timing as I felt like reading this was a chore... the art is gorgeous and sometimes the faces the characters pull are just priceless! I loved scarecrow and then in the 2nd book Pumpkinhead and the sawhorse. There is a lot of sass here as well which is hilarious!
'Everything in life is unusual until you get accustomed to it' - Scarecrow
The book Oz: The Complete Collection - Wonderful Wizard/Marvelous Land by Baum Shanower Young Beaulieu aka Eric Shanower is about a girl named Dorthy that lives with her aunt and uncle. A Cyclone was coming her way she goes to sleep and wakes up in the Land of the munchkins. She follows the yellow road to get help by the Oz so she can go home on her way she meets some new friends. I love this book and I recommend it to people who like fantasy and graphic novels. I give this book 5 stars. The best part about this book is its also marvel!!
Collects Shanower and Young's adaptations of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz. Shanower is probably the gold standard for Oz adaptations. His script is remarkably faithful and uses a lot of direct quotes from the books, and it's clearly a labor of love on every level. Skottie Young's art is likely to be an acquired taste, but I've long since acquired it. This time around, I really appreciate how his character design for Dorothy splits the difference between how Denslow and Neill drew her.
The visual style is cute. I understand that the creators might have wanted to stay true to the original books, but more than a century has passed since their publication and the sexism and misogyny haven't aged well. It would seem more in the spirit of the originals for people of all genders to have a little empathy for each others' situations.
This graphic novel was good. I just happened to see it at my library and picked it up. I didn't know what to expect considering I didn't know what the wizard of oz story was about in the first place. But it was a very wholesome story well two stories and I really liked it. I think I'll also read the other ones

Shanower does a great job streamlining the story to suit the graphic novel, and the art of Young and Beaulieu matches the material wonderfully.
The only critique is that the smaller size of the graphic novel occasionally renders the art less effective even to the point of being hard to make out at times.
This is a cute and very colorful graphic novel of The Wizard of Oz. I love the art work in this. I do feel like this had some differences fron the original story. But overall a good, fun read.
