About the author

Roy Thomas was the FIRST Editor-in-Chief at Marvel--After Stan Lee stepped down from the position. Roy is a longtime comic book writer and editor. Thomas has written comics for Archie, Charlton, DC, Heroic Publishing, Marvel, and Topps over the years. Thomas currently edits the fanzine Alter Ego for Twomorrow's Publishing. He was Editor for Marvel comics from 1972-1974. He wrote for several titles at Marvel, such as Avengers, Thor, Invaders, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and notably Conan the Barbarian. Thomas is also known for his championing of Golden Age comic-book heroes — particularly the 1940s superhero team the Justice Society of America — and for lengthy writing stints on Marvel's X-Men and Avengers, and DC Comics' All-Star Squadron, among other titles.

Also a legendary creator. Creations include Wolverine, Carol Danvers, Ghost Rider, Vision, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Valkyrie, Morbius, Doc Samson, and Ultron. Roy has also worked for Archie, Charlton, and DC among others over the years.

This volume collects one of my favorite Thor story arcs when marvel did the origins of their Norse pantheon and told the tales of Odin and the gods. Very nice writing and art. Very recommended

A strange and wild ride through Norse mythology, Wagner, Kirby, and the Marvel Universe. This crazy train is a roller coaster!

There were many times I questioned what Roy Thomas was doing, but it all paid off in the end, and the finale, with the Celestials, was an epic payoff to the long and messy storyline that proceeded it.

The collection wraps up the Celestials arc, with a diversion into the origins of Asgard via a retelling of Der Ring des Nibelungen. Overall it’s an epic conclusion with multiple pantheons, Eternals, twists aplenty and many many plot threads wrapped up from dozens of issues. I wasn’t a particular fan of the Ring section with Odins Eye, although like the evolution of the comics mythos with the concept of divine rebirth and the cycle of Ragnorak. The resolution of the Celestial plot, begun back in Eternals #1 was the main reason I read this and thought that Roy Thomas and his successors wrapped it up very effectively.

In this collection, our mighty Thor is smack dab in the middle of a god war when he decides to chuck everything and go on a vision quest. I mean that literally as Thor spends a lot of time with a giant eye as they go over a sort of retelling of the Nibelungenlied. I've not read the actual Nibelungenlied but this version is full of incest and assholes.

Loved it as a child!

The melding of Germanic myths with the Celestial saga was such a wild take. Loved it! Thor at his mythic finest!
