When her family of intergalactic hippies are brutally murdered before her eyes, a young woman inadvertently recruits the help of a grizzled veteran turned janitor, an exiled alien princess and her indebted human husband, four enslaved children, a genius scientist with not one social grace, and a giant alien that contains her brother’s soul, in order to help her maintain her freedom and her life. If Nozomi had known that the discovery of the giant alien would lead to her parents’ deaths, her brother being lost into a coma, and a world dying in a fiery apocalypse caused by her hand, she would have just stayed in bed.In the years since she’s found a home on a remote mining station and has been able to hide her past by stuffing the giant alien being that sustains her brother’s comatose body into a cargo container, but then the race that murdered her family finds her. Forced to flee in a rickety spaceship captained by a man twice her age with just as many secrets, they are joined by an alien princess and her enslaved husband, four children of assorted species who’ve never been off-station, and a scientist with the social graces of rotting meat.Together, they must try to survive the storms that the galaxy throws against them, which includes greedy mega-corporations, raiders, pirates, the occasional band of slavers, and their own phantoms from the past, as they flee from the destruction of their home and try and rebuild their lives.
This fast-paced, action-packed story follows the fortunes of a disparate group of human and alien characters who find themselves thrown together by chance when the jump station they’re on comes under violent attack from galactic pirate raiders. With some dark secrets and several skeletons-in-their-cupboards, not to mention violent and/or tragic pasts amongst them; and with little in common except the instinct to survive, they must adapt, pool their knowledge and, above all, learn how to trust each other with their lives…or they will die!
Stephen Coghlan creates brilliant characters. His gradual unravelling of the mysteries surrounding the human ‘Freebie’, Nozomi, and her ambiguous alien companion, Nobilis, is skilfully done. I soon warmed to the kindly, teddy bear like Oursinian, ‘Pops’; and I loved the way the marital relationship between the scaly Selth ‘Freebie’, Isa, and the human ‘Debtee’, Telfer, deepens and strengthens as the story progresses. I even became a fan of the initially repellent ‘Doc’ – a gangling, socially-inept Grondonian scientist who never shuts up, has a wry habit of looking askance at humankind’s shortcomings, and who has an appalling fate that’s the stuff of nightmares hanging over him.
…But my favourite character is the knowledgeable ‘old hand’, Kalle Aaron, head maintenance tech on the jump-station, whose gruff exterior belies his soft heart and his championing of the disadvantaged and downtrodden. One of my favourite parts of the story is the humorous & touching scene where the four little ‘Drudges’ (young children, owned by the corporation, who spend their whole lives cleaning the station) attack him with makeshift weapons believing he’s an invading pirate.
The story explores the themes of slavery, freedom, opportunistic no-holds-barred commercialism, and the unforeseen consequences of one’s actions.
I really enjoyed the clever ways the author creates tension and foreshadowing – his manipulation of ‘Basic’ & ‘Standard’ English is inspired and brings the Galactic Sphere world vividly to life, as does his use of ‘Encyclopedia’ updates.
If you’d enjoy an exciting, nail-biting, emotion-tugging read, then ‘Nobilis’ is the book for you. I loved it and thoroughly recommend it.
(The author, who is a social media friend, gave me a free copy of this book purely for my own interest, without any strings attached.)
Space Pirates Galore When an ancient being is awakened on a space station, space pirates zero in to capture it for its strange and magnificent powers. Kalle Aaron, the head maintenance technician on the station pulls the survivors together in a desperate race to escape the vicious predators. Kalle has many secrets and each of the crew brings specialized skills to the fight.
The story moves like the speed of light, from one danger to another. This crew of strangers must learn about loyalty, trust and sacrifice to overcome the enemy. The pages fly under Mr. Coghlan’s expert guidance in this strange and dangerous galaxy. I look forward to other installments to this story.
