Shuichi Shigeno (Japanese author profile: しげの秀一) is a manga artist, best known for the manga series Initial D. Shigeno has also created Bari Bari Densetsu, Dopkan, and Tunnel Nuketara Sky Blue ("First Love in Summer") all prior to the manga that would make him famous in 1995. In 1985, he received the Kodansha Manga Award in shōnen for Bari Bari Densetsu.
Overall the series never really had a full moment. Shigeno allowed us to see Takumi actually acting like a teenager, as well as a downhill demon. Those moments really helped the reader to realize how impressive his driving skills really are. I enjoyed it.
What a way to finish the race goddamn. I kinda wanted a better conclusion for this manga, the ending felt so abrupt. I wanted to see more from the perspective of the side characters, it could've used another volume. The bonus story of Tak was cute though.
4.5/5 Review for the entire series- Takumi Fujiwara is a son of Tofu shop owner/a talanted street racer and without realizing gets to learn driving in depth because of careful regimen set by his father during his daily tofu delivery runs. Soon Takumi ends up racing local street racers and the series is essentially the journey of him realizing his life goals and becoming a better racer.
The series isn't perfect because at times it doesn't go deep into characters or sometimes forcing the plot. But overall it never lacks in pleasing the reader and in it's own way I really like it.
I didn't knew much about JDM cars but the manga really got me interested in cars overall. Races are done really well and often the 'out-of-the-box solution' really blows you away. Build up for some races is done really really well. Side characters and the humour would be another strength of the series. Also, reading this while listening to eurobeats is just whole another experience.
I just like this whole journey of Tak being highschool chatting with (or rather just listening to) Iggy/Itsuku to the ending with having figured out life so much. Just a good growing up manga!
The ending of the race was actually solid…but that’s pretty much it. I’m guessing that maybe they got told to wrap it up even faster cause after the race they rush into the end. The aftermath is just a BBQ between the Project D guys, none of the Akina all stars, the other opponents, Shinji, hell you don’t even see Takumi’s girlfriend anyway, also kind of annoyed we never saw Natalie again, the way her story ended made it seem like they’d see each other again and there was a couple of times she could’ve popped up. Then there’s 2 one shots after this, both not that good for different reasons. The first one is based on the girls from Usui, who were the opponents as soon as they go outside Akina and who didn’t show up till the final race. Only reason they got this was because the manga is lowkey a huge perv and for awkward 4th wall breaks. The other one shot is a prequel, Takumi as a middle schooler ditching his dad. It was okay and kind of nice but there’s some undertones of racism and it makes sense why it’s not available on the apps to read the chapter. These made no sense. This series is overhyped l, overrated, y’all gas this up way too much. SKIP. I’m glad I read this for free and didn’t collect the manga.

After finishing reading MF Ghost volumes 1 to 19, I figured it was the right time to finally read the complete Initial D manga series from volume 1 to 48. As a car nut and one who's love for the FD RX7 runs deep, there was a ton to love in this series.
