Charlie Masterson - retired villain. Consumed with grief after losing his beloved partner.
Relieved of his life savings in an overseas property scam, Masterson is forced to raid a seemingly impregnable vault.
The story re-imagines the infamous Hatton Garden heist in London of April 2015. A small gang of ageing associates is assembled by Masterson to undertake the robbery.
However amidst them is a mole - a traitor feeding information to the one person Masterson hoped never to deal with again.
I read this book with little prior understanding of the Hatton Garden robberies. I was blown away with this novel! The plot centres around three life long friends and old school burglars who devise a plan as one last hurrah for their retirement. The book is crafted into three parts with which each becomes faster in pace. The first of the three parts gives meticulous detail into the lives of the three friends and how they came to be. The author clearly has a lived experience of the places he references to in London in this book. The second of the three parts, details the main action within the plot (no spoilers)! Whilst you think this plot is going to take a linear path, the final part of this book becomes very fast paced. You have to concentrate or you can miss subtle nods to its ending. The ending truly caught me by surprise! Whilst this book does have the occasional repeated clique, the plot structure and attention to detail in the nuances of the story really bring the story to life. You grow to will on the trio in a proper good vs evil narrative. By the end of the story I was shocked and captivated by the three main characters. I would 100% recommend it to a friend!! Can’t wait for the sequel!
This book is only loosely based on the Hatton garden heist, leading to lots of twists and turns and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next with a truly shocking ending.
