Abuse is easier to bear if you understand that the abuser is trying to alleviate his own unhappiness. Following disaster or misfortune, whether famine, economic distress, the poorer, more oppressed sections of society, who are suffering most, turn on a weaker section of their nation and blame them for the misfortune for the suffering they are enduring. This process is known as projection and it makes the sufferer feel better partly because it appears to explain what is happening and partly because it gives the sufferer someone to look down on. There is one most important the weaker group must have been previously vilified by the voice of authority and, preferably, do not look like or talk like the first sufferer. They turn on the weaker group to blame and this eases the first sufferer’s pain. Men bully and control women to ease the inner pain of their own inadequacies. Currently, populist politicians, publicly appear to adopt the bullying of a weaker group to obtain the vote of those suffering from misfortune and who are themselves blaming the same weaker group. An example is a man who thought women wearing the hijab looked like post boxes. The same emotional process sells newspapers under the ‘Tell the people what they want to hear.’ People vote for those who share their prejudices and tell them what they want to hear.
