మైనా[Maina]
పంజరంలో మైనగోరు నిద్రలేవడంతోనే 'రామ రామ' అంది. స్వేచ్ఛను సహృదయంతోనే పంజరంలో పెట్టి బంధించిన మానవుడు ఆవలించి లేచాడు. సాదరంగా ఓసారి దాన్ని పలకరించి అవతలకు వెళ్ళిపోయాడు.
సాయి యింకా నిద్ర లేవలేదు. కలలో రెక్కలగుర్రం మీద ఎక్కడికో యెగిరి పోతున్నాడు. మైనా రెండుసార్లు పేరెట్టి పిలిచింది. సాయి అన్నయ్యలేచి సాయిని లేపాడు. సాయి లేవకుండానే విసుక్కున్నాడు.
''నీ మైనా పిలుస్తోందిరా. ఇంకా నిద్రేనా, లే'' అంటూ ఒక్క కుదుపు కుదిపాడు. అయినా లేవలేదు. మైనా మరోసారి పిలిచింది.
సాయి వొళ్ళు విరుచుకుని, లేచి నిల్చుని పంజరం దగ్గరకు వచ్చాడు. మైనా ఒక్కసారి రెక్కల్ని టపటపా కొట్టుకుని ఆనందంగా తల ఊపింది. పంజరంలోంచి దాన్ని తీసి బుగ్గమీద పొడిపించుకొని, ముఖం కడుక్కుందామని దొడ్లోకి పరెగెత్తాడు.
మైనా మెల్లగా ఎగురుతూ వచ్చి నీళ్ళడేగిఇశా మీద వాలింది. వచ్చేప్పుడు సాయి పంజరం తలుపులు వేసిరాలేదు. ''పోనిలే ఇవ్వాళ నీకూ ఆగష్టు పదిహేను''' అనుకున్నాడు అక్కడకొచ్చిన దాన్ని చూసి.
మైనా అరుస్తోంటే ఆలోచనల్ని తెంపుకొని అటు చూశాడు. ఎలా వచ్చిందో నల్లపిల్లి మైనాను నోట కరుచుకుని పారిపోతుంది. పళ్ళ సందుట్లో మైనా ప్రాణం గిజగిజలాడుతోంది.
సాయి పెద్దగా అరచుకొంటూ దాన్ని వెంబడించాడు. ఆ వెనకనే సాయి అన్నయ్యా, వాళ్ళమ్మా పరుగెత్తారు.
చేజిక్కిన ఆహారాన్ని అది సులభంగా వదిలేయ దలుచుకోలేదు. మూడు నాలుగు యిళ్ళు తిప్పింది. గోడలు దూకింది. చివరకు ఓ యింఇ అటకెక్కి కూర్చుంది.
సాయి నిచ్చెన తెచ్చి అటక ఎక్కాడుగాని అప్పటికే నీరసించిపోతున్న మైనా అరుపు ఆఖరిసారిగా వినిపించి ఆగిపోయింది.
సాయి కళ్లు నీళ్ళతో తడిసిపోయాయి.
ఆ రోజు స్కూలుకు వెళ్ళలేదు. ఇంట్లోనే కూర్చున్నాడు.....

I have listened to this novel's audio book by Story Vault.
Though I don't like the main protagonist's character completely (I feel he has weak heart), I think writer tries to showcase how every person has his own flaws and how he emerges finally overcoming them.
His life as police constable and as a leader to his friends while he's single is inspiring and we can feel he's very real.
In his childhood he thinks his uncle's daughter as his wife like everyone in their family are saying, but once he leaves to police training, he never thinks of her until she wrote one letter (this is while he's attracted to Hafiza) asking him to come back. He feels very excited n goes to Village in a jiff after many years n marries her soon. The disturbing part is he feels attracted to every other women he met (before or after his marriage) but never remembers his wife.
Like seriously ?!!!!
Writer showcase how men think of women n vice versa before n while in a relationship with her through his relationship with Musiya. He portrays many emotions in this phase (this is before his marriage) ., guilty of taking advantage of her husband's trust on him, feel loved by her, taking her love as granted, feels bad if she cries for him and so many....
His relationship with Hafiza is something very unsettling. He sees her as kid at first but later she tries to tease (flirt with) him almost always. Till some level it is fine but after he's married also, she tried to do the same making his wife Kamala feel insecure.
His attraction towards Hafiza when his wife went to his in-laws in her pregnancy feels very wrong. Even when he's in hospital his attraction towards a nurse Tereza is unexplainable.
One thing I feel very connected is the character of his wife Kamala. She is innocent who waited for him for years. She feels bad when he laughs with other women as she's naive. Her actions even fights with her husband once she returns after her pregnancy, are also acceptable (to me )as everyone in colony told her Hafiza is pregnant.
His relationship with Kamala is very beautiful as he understands everything about her but never remembers when he's feeling attraction with other women. Kamala is an ideal wife who supports him in every difficulty.
Though he rejects Tereza, his idealogy n ego behind that is not so good.
At last the writer links events of his life to the name of novel which is nice.

A semi- real story of a ordinary person under realistic extraordinary circumstances. Multiple love/lust stories, life as a cop in pre and post independent Telugu states, life in a TB asylum and more experiences of a person from teenage to middle age. A broad range of experiences of a telugu person in a nascent globalising world. The writer wanted to show that telugu people also had lives that are extraordinary and on par with other life experiences in other parts of the world - those with adventure, love, sadness and all the questions about life and our purpose that constantly pester us. However, i found that the woman haracters's thoughts are only portrayed from the vantage point of a man and they never speak for themselves. The protagonist Sai Baba assumes the woman's thoughts.

Terrific style of writing..felt the writer inspired a bit from Nidhi in Chivaraku migiledi.
