The Power to Save a Life

Jacob Chastain grew up in an environment filled with drugs and violence. Inside the home that should have felt safe, fear and anxiety were the desperate norm. Stability and security eluded him as he was shuffled between family and friends that would take him in. But at school, things were different. There, day after day, year after year, Chastain’s teachers saved him.

Teach Me, Teacher is the true story of a childhood marked by heartache—a story that may be similar to that of the children sitting in your classroom. It’s the story that shaped Chastain into the educator he is today. Lessons learned from his experiences as a child and as a growing educator spring from every page, offering reflections on the trials and triumphs facing teachers and students everywhere. From these lessons, we learn that one’s darkest moments can ultimately lead to a meaningful and fulfilling life when someone cares enough to step in and make a difference.

Written in celebration of teachers and the power of education, Teach Me, Teacher affirms that you have the power to save a life.

Jacob Chastain’s book, Teach Me, Teacher, is part memoir, part teacher professional learning. Jacob shares stories about his childhood and the effect that it had on him as a person and a student, while also sharing the profound effect that his teachers had on him. He also shares his experiences from his first few years of teaching, which ANYONE who is a teacher can completely relate to.

I have been a teacher for 18 years and found myself taking notes and ordering books on Amazon that Jacob recommended. I purchased this book after I started listening to his podcast of the same name, and was not disappointed.

For anyone who is looking for a first hand look at why trauma-informed education is SO ESSENTIAL, look no further. I think that new and veteran teachers alike will be able to pull something valuable from Jacob’s story. I went into teaching to become the teacher I desperately needed when I was in school.

Jacob’s grit, determination and passion for teaching are evident and inspiring. Teaching IS an act against suffering. Thank you for rekindling my passion.

I cannot express how much I love this book. This reminds me of a quote by Brad Meltzer 'Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about'. Surprise this includes our students. These young kids may be going through things we have no idea about. Keep this in mind. Treat everyone you meet with compassion.

Need to Teach

Chastain has had a difficult childhood that led him to be a great teacher. His story reminds me that it is okay to be passionate about what you love and to live every single one of my students even if they drive me crazy.
