Chicago Police Detective Brooke Chandler is keeping a secret…and if she’s not careful, it could get her killed. Brooke is no stranger to the supernatural. In Chicago, vampires are just as prevalent as drug lords, and infinitely more bloodthirsty. So when her partner and fiancé dies in a mysterious fire while chasing down a lead in Salem, she suspects something dark and otherworldly is at play.
Blessed with the ability to see into the past by touching inanimate objects, Brooke transfers to the Salem PD, hoping her talent will help her get to the bottom of things. Between dodging assassination attempts and being stonewalled at every turn, the going is tough. Add in a mysterious fae club owner with secrets of his own and a personal grudge against her, and it becomes nearly impossible.
If Brooke wants to play in the supernatural sandbox, she’s going to have to roll up her sleeves and get dirty. But how many people will have to die for Brooke to discover the truth about her fiancé?

A satisfactory read with nice twists and a well-done romance. It has all the norms of a fantasy book and I liked the setting and the main character, Brooke, was very sarcastic and funny. Will be reading the second book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing was well done and it had a great storyline that has a lot of promises in growth. That being said, although this is the first in a series it can be read as a stand-alone as it does not have a cliffhanger ending but rather just leaves it open for more. I'm excited to see where it leads us too; oir main characters seem very powerful and it'll be fun to see just how much they really have, and of course to see them get together. There isn't much in the way of sex although there is a flashback 'vision' and I'm hoping for more later! I really liked the storyline. A detective with the ability to touch objects and see visions moves to Salem to find out what happened to her fiance. In doing so she ends up in all these cases that unlock mysteries about the supernatural community, her family, her past, her reincarnated past, and even some interesting powers. I liked that the writing was maturely written and also that it had a good and quick plot progression. I recommend it and I'll be continuing on w the series :)
Oh where to start first the author’s ignorance of firearms, but yet writes them into their story…google is your friend example is author wrote .1911 pistol as a firearm well that is a model of firearm not a caliber…1911’s come in 22, 9mm, 10mm, 40 and 45 calibers. Also S & W .40 is a cartridge casing that is used in making 40 caliber bullets which work in any 40 caliber firearm. Most who use firearms, never reference their firearm by the caliber examples Glock 22, Ruger P90….most likely the police issued weapon is a S&W M&P 40 that is referred to as M&P40…again ignorance…another apparently the FMC had her 1911 in her bra…that is a big bra to hold an 8 inch by 6 in firearm, even the ultra compact 1911 are still about 6 in by 4 in, that’s a lot firearm to stuff in ur bra to keep concealed and to whip out really easy….before I am labeled as a gun nut…I carried a firearm 40 hours a week for 20 years and was educated to recognized what firearm I was on the wrong end of. I could had overlooked this but as the story progressed there were glaring issues with flow, as well a the FMC became an entitled power tripping nasty C. Examples were author compared Salem pd office to be quarter the size of Chicago, everything was compared to Chicago, but we have no clue what Chicago even looked like, cuz the story started with FMC in Buffalo on her way to Salem…so descriptive of location and events is severely lacking. Flow issues example…FMC was fight a wraith, the wraith had knocked both of her firearms out of her hands…so how did she shoot the wraith?….No where did she pick one of her firearms back up……And thirdly FMC started off kind of strong but quickly progressed to a know it all, entitled Bitch, then progressed to a nasty person. She jumped to conclusions and judgements quickly, she is suppose to be and excellent detective, I am gonna have to disagree. She expected everyone to give her everything because she is so special…she is in a city full of special people. My favorite is her partner say he did not get to meet Tom, but she pulls and old memory off him…immediately she jumps to conclusions that he is lying cuz well there is no other explanation, well maybe look at you were hunting vampires, you yourself have this amazing ability to see events in peoples lives not like that is evasion of privacy…but to think that there might be a mystical other reason for them not remembering or the captain trying to cover up Tom’s disappearance…awful closed minded especially after learning of the fae.
And finally, this book came out a year or so ago, my review does nothing to help correct Authors ignorance, but hopefully let’s other know these issues, I wished someone who have written an honest review that I could have seen before wasting my time and money on this.
Review in english : Full disclosure, I read this book a long time a go. But I finally decided to review it because I really liked it.
This urban fantasy series is great : a mystery, a cop searching for the truth, a sexy fae/club owner. What else do you need ?
I really liked the character of Brooke who is looking for the truth about her fiancé. Her encounter with Maddock, a mysterious character who will make you want to read more, is explosive. As in all urban fantasy, the romance is present but will take quite a while to develop. But Maddock's character is definitely worth the read.
I think I'm going to read this series again because I never got around to finishing it. The 3rd volume came out long after I switched Goodreads accounts.
A woman who is searching for answers, a man who thought he had them all… this story, while fast paced, introduces several characters and their involvement with one another, while leaving some questions unanswered. I love the world building of the small town, the brief glimpse into the occult surrounding it, and the character building between the detective and the Fae lord.
The “Second time…” title has a split meaning for me. One is revealed within the story. The other because I had started this book before, couldn’t get into it, and tried again later. I’m pretty sure it is due to the very fast paced nature of the first few chapters, but if you find yourself in a similar position keep going. Once the balls start rolling you will find yourself hooked.
Brooke Chandler is a detective in Salem Massachusetts on loan from Chicago PD, to investigate her fiancé's death. Chicago is overrun with vampires, but Salem is a haven for other supernatural creatures including Fae extraordinaire Maddock Tremaine. Brooke is brash, rushes headlong into to trouble immediately, not very likeable, and violent. I didn't like her for a long time and then she grew on me. Investigating means finding out the truth about the world around her, her own background, and the truth about her dead fiance.
This is a great start to a wonderful series. Fast paced, exciting, and seriously I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting! Loved it. and unlike most of the fantasy fiction regarding the faerie, vampires and other supernatural books having the plot set in Salem is genuinely ingenious as it already has a history for the tourists. Well done and I throughly enjoyed this book and will be carrying on with the series.
Brooke was devistated when she found out her fiance had been murdered. She felt guilty because she didn't go with him when he went to investigate missing people in Salem. When she arrives she finds out the are other beings going bump in the night. She in way over her head and she ends up befriending a powerful fae. Lots of twists and turns you don't see coming. Great story line. I just wish there was more steam between the main characters.
It was a great book to read, fast paced detective. MC is not the smartest as she goes into everything unprepared (and it frustrated me to no end) but with all the twists and turns the book is very well though out and I would say worth a read. I loved that "romantic interest", if you can call it that, was Scottish, that was my favourite part.
Brooke is a detective with a secret . She can touch things and see what happened. Her fiance is dead, and she is going to find out why and how. She runs into all kinds of supernatural creatures.
This book had me on the edge of my seat and had multiple twists I didn't see coming. An awesome mystery in an urban fantasy world, with great characters. Can't wait to read the rest!
Nice murder mystery. Lots of paranormal beings, fae, witches, and a host of great characters. A big twisty I didn't see coming, and that did it for me.
I could not put this book down I am completely hooked, there are some things you see coming and quite a few that you don't which make the book interesting to read
