New York is under attack from sinister forces. To save the city, she must give her life…
Emma Slade burns for revenge and excels at kicking butt. At least human butt. But the fiends who murdered her family hopelessly outnumber the half-fae orphan. And the handsome, brooding werewolf claiming he can help might send her instead to her death.
Liam Cooper is determined to locate the prophesied savior whose sacrifice will protect the realm. Prowling the Manhattan streets, he’s shocked when he encounters Emma and learns she’s his fated mate. But it breaks his heart when he learns she’s also the messiah he seeks.
Taken to the shifter’s compound, Emma trains with a mystic sword that has never lost a battle. But Liam grows increasingly anxious that fulfilling the prophecy will doom the woman he loves.
Can the two heroes pull off a miracle and twist a terrible destiny?
I absolutely loved this book...until we get to the part about her brother. I don't understand one bit why that was even a part of this story. Had it only been that he molested her, that would be different...but she let him? She fantasized about him in her sleep when it was Liam? Her BROTHER? I don't get it. Why? It did nothing but take away from the story and kind of grossed me out. Granted, it could be explained later on, but I couldn't continue to read after we learned she thought it was her brother in bed with her rather than Liam...and that was about 3/4 of the way through. It actually surprises me that no one else has said anything about this. I can't be the only one that thinks it was distasteful and a distraction. Honestly, I feel like there should be a warning in the description. I would have loved to finish this series, but that's just way too much for me to swallow.
Absolutely AMAZING! Savior's Spell pulled me into Emma and Liam's world from the first words. I was only planning to look over ARC before going to sleep at 1 AM but Emma wouldn't let me go until halfway through the book, I fell asleep still holding my Kindle and wearing my glasses. As much as I loved Nic and Aiden's story throughout The Unseelie Court limited series, I think I enjoyed Savior's Spell even more. Maybe it is a case of a book in hand because all of the books of The Unseelie Court are fantastic. I pre-ordered but couldn't wait so I was delighted to get an ARC of Savior's Spell, but my love of the book is all mine. This book is well worthy of shouting about.
“As was my habit when entering a new territory, I closed my eyes and silently recited my own version of the Serenity prayer. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can. And the ability to make a difference. Then I opened my eyes and took my first hit of New York air...”
Emma Slade wants to avenge the deaths of her mother and brother, but she’s not sure how to. Half fae and half human, she nows she’s someone who can deal with the “twisted ones”, but is she the actual Savior foretold in myths and legends of the Seelie and Unseelie Courts?
Her actions reach the Werewolves, lead by Liam, their Alpha, who is strangely connected with Emma...as she is connected with him. United in protecting a strong, young were who has bonded with Emma and could be her downfall.
Are there things not known? Heck, it’s Gwen Rivers world, and she seems to be the only one unspooling the thread that started with Nic and Aiden in “The Unseelie Court” series.I love these characters as well; especially North and Kiesha. The Unseelie Court laud the foundations...now,Rivers is building the house. Highly Recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it]
Wow what an awesome story, continuing on from Nic and Aiden I seriously love this world and the new spin-off was definitely worth the wait I just loved it.
Great characters, awesome story there was nothing not to love in this story.
I had read the Unseelie Court series a little while ago and was left hungry. I wanted more and Gwen Rivers certainly delivered. Savior’s Spell is full of suspense, neck breaking action (I thought I was going to be whiplashed a couple of times), deceit, betrayal and budding love. The main characters are meticulously and slowly developed. Even the secondary characters contribute to give this on going story substance. My favorite is North. He is like a breath of fresh air...literally. There is no excess fat here either. Everything has a reason and a purpose. What really holds this story together are the spices...pinches of romance, sprinklings of humor and cupfuls of magic. It’s all mixed and tossed together well to satisfy even the most discerning of fantasy readers.
Emma is out to avenge the death of her family by killing as many Dark Fae as she possibly can. Then she meets a mere child who has managed to survive this wicked and violent world alone. She also meets Liam and now her world is forever changed. I loved the way this story evolved. Emma follows her own mantra version of the serenity prayer and it suits her.
“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And the ability to change it.” ~Emma
One of the things I thoroughly enjoyed was the reappearance of characters from The Unseelie Court...Nic, Aiden and others. That was the icing on the cake. Be assured, you don’t have to read the Unseelie series first to wholly enjoy this Spellcaster series although I would certainly read them at some point. Sometimes, it’s a nice twist to delve back into the past to read how it all began For me, Savior’s Spell whets the appetite, tickles the heart and stabs the imagination for what is to come. More, please.
Note: I consider this series for older YA readers, 16 or 17 and adult. There is violence, sexual scenes and innuendo. I wouldn’t give this book to my 13 year old granddaughter to read.
This series is a spin-off from the Unseelie Court-series by Jennifer L. Hart (she changed the name for the genre) and I really enjoyed reading it. Emma Slade travels to New York to hunt for dark fae after the death of her mother and brother. She is a spellcaster (half fae, half human) and after saving a fae she is followed by Liam, alpha werewolf, who is quite interested in her. He and his pack also save fae and he soon recognizes Emma as his mate.
I really liked the fact Liam did not just simply fall in love with Emma because she is his mate. He wants their relationship to grow naturally, but then he also gets some news on the prophecy-front about 'the savior' (Emma). Will they have a future together?
The story was entertaining and I loved seeing Nic/Aiden and Addison again. However, this story does not pack the punch like the Unseelie Court-series. This might be because that was written as a 4-book story and this one seemed to end quite neatly at the ending. I was kept wondering if there was more to come about Emma/Liam or that the next book will be about others?
Overall, another great story by a great author. I look forward to the next!
I received an advanced copy from the author, but this is my honest and voluntary review.
I received a ARC from the author and this book was amazing. Emma Sanders is a 1/2 Fae, 1/2 human with empathic powers and also a Spellcaster. For 2 years she has been tracking the dark Fae who killed her mother and brother. One night she saves a Fae woman from “Fae haters” and her life changes. She is seeking shelter from a storm when she stumbles across a old restaurant and meets a young girl living on her own. Liam Cooper is a werewolf and acting law for the 6th borough. He witnesses Emma saving the young woman and decides to follow her. This book has deception, betrayal and romance with strong characters and awesome friendships that will have you riveted to your seat and not wanting to put it down. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one.
wasn't sure what to expect since this was my first book from Gwen Rivers but it surpassed anything I could have imagined! I honestly can't wait for the next installment in the series! It has well developed characters, a plot that just keeps giving, and is well timed in its humor. I don't like recapping the book summary but I will say that if you like paranormal and stubborn characters there is no reason for you to make any plans tonight because you will be binge reading this book all the way through!
Hmm... There were parts of this book I really liked. Overall, though ... It was just ok. I'm seriously sitting here, having just finished the book with an unsatisfied grimace on my face. How can a book that showed so much potential have ended so. .. blah?
This was an entertaining story. Emma is half-Fae, which means that she can't lie, but she CAN hurt humans, which she does, to protect innocent Fae. Her goal is to kill the Fae who killed her family.
Then she meets Liam, the alpha shifter assigned to protect the Fae. When it turns out Emma is the "chosen one" to save the Fae by sacrificing herself, it's made more complicated by the fact that she's his fated mate.
So, lots of juicy tropes in this one, executed pretty well. I liked the chemistry between Liam and Emma, particularly how careful he was with her.
There's a few twists that I thought were bit heavy-handed, but overall, a fun read.
Savior’s Spell by Gwen Rivers is a paranormal romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Jacqueline Rendell.
This is the first book of Gwen’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I absolutely loved all the characters. I cannot wait for the second book in the series Savior’s Hex to be released on audible so I can get more of Liam and Emma.
Jacqueline did a great job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of her projects in the future.
I would highly recommend this series if you love Paranormal Romances.
This was an intense story. The storyline was an emotional rollercoaster. I enjoyed this story, it was interesting. The interactions between the fae and werewolves was interesting. Loved Kiesha and Emma.

Like jesus not even like mild but the whole rape of a minor and all the shit surrounding that then add in it being a pretty major part of the plot and not a distant dark backstory because shes like in the middle of the trauma and like still super fucked from it to the point of victim blaming herself like jesus fucking christ. Genuinely ruined what was a pretty decent book. Like fuck sakes wouldve made WAY more sense for it to be this mysterious absent father and SPOILER AF like no shit dude this is a review of a book anyway shouldve been father abusing both kids and therefore thats why the brother turned all evil or needing/seeking power or something like christ.
Even without that hellscape the emotional scenes especially in the last third after said revelation were shite like such a disconnect numbness like you couldnt vibe with the story like idk the way it was written was all anticlimatic and i didnt care about the romance or the plot or whatever i mean i got pissed when the fae fucks legit were like you cant live here bullshit i mean god. Idk its so much bullshit and there were lots of brushing over details and plot holes and general like telling not showing and idk if this is the first book in a universe or what but it felt like a spinoff to another series which i shouldve read first which as with the lack of trigger warnings anywhere i also didnt see any this book is part of such and such universe and should be read after this series etc stuff anywhere and frankly that made it a little jarring so if it was the first book in this universe its pretty shit on worldbuilding backstory etc like im all for showing not telling but i also like to know the rules of the world im in and this one wasnt like run of the mill typical fae or fantasy earth type shit you know the vanilla stereotypical shit you read one fae book you read em all vibe which can be great but also means you gotta work a lot harder to establish your alien version of the fae and rules etc and this one was mega weird and made like no sense so much of the time that i sorta was just hoping for the good stuff to come and for a fae shifter mate sorta book it lacked completely in that department like i swear the book was over when they finally even brought it up and then it was like insta over and no real romantic shit mosty due to the whole ptsd rape shit im guessing but yeah its fucked in many ways but like ugh i cant. Then the mix of like the very irish/celtic fae terms and norse gods and like idk i felt like there was so much happening but also nothing that actually made me happy to read and like any sense and like i cant believe they killed off magda like wtf dude like what you gonna kill the kid too like come on making her brother evil rapist wasnt emough you gotta make the fae chick she saved from evil rapey murderers also be evil to her for being half fae despite the fact shes their fkn saviour and has proven to save them like wtf? Ugh i hate it even the redeeming qualities such as the kid and some elements of story arent so good they make it forgivable.
Genuinely though almost tempted to hte read the next book in the hopes it was just the first book being a cluster fuck.
Is it because la bishs name is emma and so is mine? Perhaps. Is it because i try hard as i can to give first books in series free passses because theyre ususlly doing a whole lot of world character etc building and cant really chill til the sequel? Also probable. But god i want to like it but it had so many serious fuck ups that i hate it. Ahh.
Whatever i might skim the next books reviews and see if i can deal with another stressful fucked up read or if by some miracle it redeems itself.
Had some good quotes and humour in there i guess though lol like ill accept that.
The beginning was gross though as was the whole incest rape shit too obv but like jesus i wish it had been a little less dark cause the whole story concept screams light and good and like once upon time tv series as does the cover and bkurb etc etc and not like idk id expect this sorta shit from a dark bully fucked up sorta trigger warnings up the arse book set in a prison or something not what this book advertised itself as.
Like if youre gonna use my name make it good.
Also the prophecy was such an anticlimatic bs like Shell die like great pull that outta ya arse did ya? And then oh actually no though Like fuck off that couldve been AMAZING
Like first of all she couldve had her human side die and turn into a werewolf which again who the fuck knows how bitten i think anyway and so shell technically die but not be proper dead. But shell die sacrificing herself believing shell proper die and like damn dude that wouldve been an awesome story but its a thirsty sword weve got zero attachement to that apaprently is like 5 mins of magic tops disposible sorta crap arse sword and stops working like PUH LEASE wtf is that a sacrifice if it was gonna shit out on her anyway like for real? How is that some great sword ove had helium ballons last longer ffs she basically had a condom sword. Ugh idk its all hype and no real fufillment. Like legendary sword youd expect like excaliber or like at least a lightsaber or shit even like a magical girl wand like sailor moon but fuck she couldve literally just used a gun like i love how by not establishing the rules of this world its all up in the sir and not in a good way like bye logic weve reached hell. Like 1 machine guns theyd work better than some bs sword. If thy dont exist then why like telling me all these werewolves are related but not born but they become so when turned? Fuck knows honestly and who turns them? Like come on my dude. And then like theyre dead when theyre turned? How why if theyre dead why they got soulmates? How can they have babies can they have babies like shit ma dudes lets establish some ground rules because idk wtf is goinf on in this book world and i legit have about 4 amazing series of books i could be continuing but the blurb sounded great and i needed an easy light read to rest my emotions and the full on feeling of amazing books snd instead got this shite which makes me wish i read smut because at least thats satisfying. But nooooo. I chose to read a shouldve been lighthearted mate book with emotions and like happy stuff incolving like joining a pack and being mates and training and ended up being insane in the worst ways and fucking regrettable honestly like im sorry book emma you deserved better honestly.
What struggle it was to read this! I am not sure where to begin. The characters and story seemed ok but the actual dialogue just took me nowhere. By the end I did not care what happened.
I really liked this book and can hardly wait to read the next in the series. There is so much going on in the story it is hard to know where to start the description. Emma is a half fae known as a spellcaster. She lost her mother and brother to the twisted fae two years ago and has been looking for their killers since then. She arrives in New York on a bus and looks for a deserted place to take her rest. She stumbles across a lone werewolf child, Keisha, in the abandoned building who stole the book for me.
Meanwhile Liam, the werewolf alpha, caught her scent when she got off the bus and was already tracking her. He saw her save a full fae from human fae haters which confused him because he was originally thinking she was a twisted, those who steal fae's powers by siphoning them by murdering them.
Add to the mix that Emma is Liam's mate and the one prophesied to save the fae people when spellcasters are feared and despised by the very people she is supposed to save as well as many other fine story points and you will have lots to read and enjoy. While there isn't out and out romance in this book of the story arc the connection is there especially on the alpha's side. I am hoping for even more focus on the two becoming a couple in the next book.

Emma is a spellcaster. She is in new york to take out as many dark fae as she can. They syphon humans and fae alike. One night emma hears screams and runs to see whats happening. There she sees fae haters cornering a fae woman. They turn to attack emma leaving the fae woman to escape. Emma beats them up catching the attention of the alpha wolf liam. He stalks her going to take her out for being a threat to his pack. Emma takes shelter and finds alittle girl all by herself. Emma asks her if she can stay and she says yes. Emma knows if she stays too long she will pit the little girl rage in danger. Later that night liam attacks only to discover emma is his soulmate. He wants to take care of her but emma wont let him. After finding out she is a spellcaster he becomes upset wondering if she is the one in the prophecy. The characters are amazing. The story is well written and action packed. I could not put this book down. I loved it.

I don't think I could have written a more generic, clichéed, and unoriginal story if I tried. The only thing that was vaguely interesting was the world-building itself which sadly took fourth place after the savior prophecy, beating the evil bad guy, and the cookie-cutter fated mate romance. There are various old gods, there are other realms one of which apparently somehow lost its magic, and a lot more, none of which gets enough page-time to ever be explained properly. There is one decent twist that also turns out to be surprisingly dark but that wasn't nearly enough to redeem the rest of this boring stereotype party. The romance is the angsty kind and is driven (or rather hindered) by unfortunate misunderstandings. It has all the misunderstandings. If you are new to reading fiction in general as well as urban fantasy and paranormal romance in particular you might enjoy this book but if you have a bit of experience in any one of those categories this is probably just going to eye-roll you to death.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
Emma the Spellcaster had no more got to NY than she had to save her first Fae
Emma had no more than left the bus depot than she had to save a Fae woman from attack, but it was from humans not the twisted dark ones she was hunting. But it put her on the radar of the shape shifting wolf pack protecting this city, specially the alpha male Liam. By the time he finds her again she hastaken a young wolf under her protection and he is shocked when he finds she is his mate and that she is the Fae Savior that has been foretold as coming to save the Fae from the dark ones. But now he has to change the future and save her! He can”t let her die she means every thing to him.
Gwen Rivers has written a creative and entertaining story combining Fae & Shifters. I thought that I would just listen to a small portion of the audiobook before retiring for the night, but the story kept me enthralled. I enjoyed this story and recommend it to others who enjoy this genre, but it is for more mature readers as there is some inappropriate sexual content that is related, although not described in graphic detail. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Jacqueline Rendell's narration is great and she adds to the entertainment factor of the book. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.
I did not love the writing of this book. Found myself consistently mentally editing sentences like “wow that would have been better said this way”. A lot of telling not showing. Maybe I didn’t like it much because I listened to it as an audio book and didn’t love the way the narrator spoke but it was just not it for me. Very meh, kinda corny, and the stuff with the brother was just woah. Did not expect that and made me think “wtf” a few times lol. I don’t think I’d recommend this book, and I’m personally not continuing with the series.
This author is disgusting. There’s a portrayal of someone who has survived childhood SA and then there’s writing an entire molestation scene between an older brother and an underage sister in graphic detail and framing it like a consensual encounter.
Then in a fit of rage, the male MC blames her? Accuses her of liking it? And then we’re supposed to like him again?
And the lack of acknowledgment of this in these reviews? Y’all are sus too.
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and the characters and story were well developed. I loved the character personalities and character dynamics. The story was action packed, full of twists and turns and had plenty suspense, emotion, intrigue, hot chemistry and romance. I look forward to the next book in this series!! I’d highly recommend this book!!

Slow burn paranormal romance. The book isn’t based on the relationship but that storyline is woven in and when I say it’s a slow burn I mean it. Emma is a spell caster (half Fea /half human) and on a mission to get revenge for her families gruesome murders. This leads her to New York and drops her in the center of the paranormal war. A fun book with a lot of heart! There’s some hard moments and some triggers but the over all is just a girl with a big heart on a mission.
3/5 STARS! Wow! This audiobook was a pretty cool listen. I liked the characters a lot, & werewolves will always interest me (team Jacob for life). I liked the conflict & how the plot was set up. Its also super fast paced and never got boring. But, I hated the weird incest- abuse plot. We didn't really need all that. It completely threw me out of this world. Other than that, a cool tale of magic & fighting.
