About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

I am sure there is no writer in Malayalam to write like this, to criticize the society so vehemently, laughs at people. While reading, I was astonished by the direct mention people in their caste names and criticize them. If it was written today, by any other writer, there would be much trouble...

A Bhagavad Gita and a Few Breasts

Imagine the year is 1967. You go to a bookstore and you are looking for a collection of short stories and you see a book called Oru Bhagavad Gitayum Kure Mulakalum (A Bhagavad Gita and a Few Breasts). As it's 1967 you are not mortified, you are curious. You don't want to bin it or ban it, you want to read it. And what a book it is.

This Muslim was having good fun, writing about getting hold of a new edition of the Gita and watching a procession of half-naked nubile Nair girls. Don't ask what possible connection could be between the two incidents. This is Basheer. And he is the master of meanderings and benign mockery.
And he mocks the superstition of his fellow Muslims, the ideology of his fellow communists, caste , religion , politics ,nothing escapes Basheer.

Now, in the year 2019 , where banning is the rage, cartoons, Facebook posts, books , letters anything that remotely irritates your hyper sensitive sensibilities, It's time we go back to 1967.Where, instead of blacklisting, we appreciate and understand satire. And what brilliant satire it is.

അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ മയനഗരിയിലേക്ക് വായനക്കാരനെ ഊളിയിട്ടിറക്കുവാൻ ബഷീറിനുള്ള കഴിവ് പറയാതെ വയ്യ ! 'ഒരു ഭഗവത് ഗീതയും കുറെ മുലകളും' എന്ന വിചിത്രമായ തലക്കെട്ട് തന്നെയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാൻ എന്നെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്. പ്രസ്തുത കഥയടക്കം പന്ത്രണ്ടു ചെറുകഥകളാണിതിലുള്ളത്. മനസിന്റെ അകക്കാമ്പിൽ ശേഖരിച്ചുവച്ച തന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങളാണ് ഓരോ കഥയുടെയും പ്രമേയമാവുന്നത്. താൻ ഭാഗപാത്രമായ ഈ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഗുണവും ദോഷവും വളരെ വ്യംഗ്യമായി, മടുപ്പോ, വെറുപ്പോ ഉളവാക്കാതെ നർമത്തിൽ ചാലിച്ചാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കഥാപാത്രവർണനയും സ്ഥലവിവരണവും മനസിലൊരു മായാത്ത വാങ്മയചിത്രം വരക്കുന്നു. മലയാളസാഹിത്യത്തിൽ അറുപതുകളുടെ പകുതിമുതൽ വീശി തുടങ്ങിയ ആധുനികതയുടെ സ്വാധീനം ഭാഷയിലും, ചിന്തയിലും, വ്യക്തിബന്ധങ്ങളെ നോക്കികാണുന്നതിലും വളരെയധികം മാറ്റങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്ന് ഈ കഥകളിൽ ഉടനീളം കാണാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ജാതിവ്യവസ്ഥയോടുള്ള അഭിനിവേശം ചുരുങ്ങി അത് വ്യക്തികളുടെ വിളിപ്പേര് മാത്രമായി മാറുന്ന അത്ഭുതകരമായ സ്ഥിതിവിശേഷം ഇവിടെ കാണാം. മാത്രവുമല്ല, ബഷീറിന്റെ തനതു ശബ്ദപ്രയോഗങ്ങളായ 'ഉഗ്രൻ, ഹെൻപെയ്‌ക്കേഡ് ഹസ്ബൻഡ്, സ്റ്റൈലൻ, അണ്ഡകടാഹം, വാമഭാഗം...' മുതലായവ ഉടനീളം ഈ കഥകളിൽ നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
തൊഴിലാളി സംഘടനകളുടെ പൊള്ളത്തരം കഥാതന്തുവായി വരുന്ന 'പത്തു നേതാക്കന്മാരെ ആവശ്യമുണ്ട്' എന്ന ചെറുകഥാ ഏറെ ആസ്വാദ്യകരമായിരുന്നു. ചുരിക്കിപറഞ്ഞാൽ, ഈ കൊച്ചു പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ അവസാനതാളും വായിച്ചു നിർത്തുമ്പോൾ മനസിനനുഭവപ്പെടുന്ന ഉണർവ് ഒന്ന് വേറെ തന്നെയാണെന്ന് സാരം.

ഒരു ഭഗവത്ഗീതയും കുറെമുലകളും എന്നത് പതിമൂന്ന് കഥകൾ അടങ്ങുന്ന ഒരു ചെറുകഥാ സമാഹാരമാണ്. ഒരു ഭഗവത്‍ഗീതയും കുറെ മുലകളും എന്ന കഥ താൻ ഒരു മുസ്ലിം ആയതുകൊണ്ട് ഭഗവത്ഗീത തരാത്ത മംഗളോദയം മാനേജിങ് ഡയറക്‌ടർ എ.കെ.ടി.കെ.എം വാസുദേവൻ നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാടിനോട് തോന്നുന്ന അമർഷവും, മാറുമറയ്ക്കാത്ത നായർ സ്ത്രീകൾക്കെതിരെയുള്ള ഒളിയമ്പുമാണ്. സെൽഫിച്ചികൾ, ഒരു കരിമൂർഖൻ, കമ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് ഡെൻ, തങ്കമോതിരം എന്നുതുടങ്ങി  എല്ലാകഥകളും രസകരമായ  ആഖ്യാനശൈലിയിലൂടെ കഥാകാരൻ വരച്ചിട്ട തന്റെ  ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ചില  കാർട്ടൂൺ  നേർക്കാഴ്ചകളാണ്. ഏവർക്കും ഒറ്റയിരുപ്പിനു തന്നെ വായിച്ചുതീർക്കാവുന്നവ.

"ഹോട്ടലുകളിൽ ഊണിന് ഒന്നേകാൽ അണയാണു ചാർജ്. വലിയ ഹോട്ടലുകളിൽ രണ്ടണ്. ഒന്നേകാൽ അണയ്ക്കുള്ളത് ഉണ്ടാലും കാര്യം കുശാൽ. അതുകൊണ്ട് പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ വില ഒന്നേ കാൽ അണ്. ഒരു പുസ്തകം വിറ്റാൽ ഒരൂണു തരപ്പെടണം. അങ്ങനെ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ കടകൾതോറും, വീടുകൾതോറും കൊണ്ടുനടന്നു വിലക്കുന്നു. അഞ്ചുമിനിട്ട് ആറുമിനിട്ടു വായിക്കാനേ ഉള്ളു. പുസ്തകം വിറ്റു കാശും വാങ്ങി ഞാന വിടെ നില്ക്കും. വായന കഴിയുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ചോദിക്കും. "അതു ഞാൻ കൊണ്ടുപൊയ്ക്കോട്ടേ?' മിക്കവരും സമ്മതിക്കും. അങ്ങനെ ഒരേ പുസ്തകം തന്നെ എട്ടും പത്തും പ്രാവശ്യം വില്ക്കും."
