Inio Asano (浅野いにお, Asano Inio) is a Japanese cartoonist. He is known for his character-driven stories and his detailed art-style, making him one of the most influential manga author of his generation. Asano was born in 1980 and produced his first amateur comics as a teenager. His professional debut happened in 2000 in the pages of the magazine Big Comic Spirits. Since then, he has collaborated with most of the major Japanese magazines of seinen manga (comics for a mature audience). Among Asano's internationally acclaimed works are: the psychological horror Nijigahara Holograph (2003-2005); the drama Solanin (2005-2006); the existentialistic slice-of-life Goodnight Punpun (2007-2013); the erotic A Girl on the Shore (2009-2013); the sci-fi Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction (2014-2022).
4.5, mostly because this volume felt slightly disappointing after the last one (though no surprise there, given vol. 9 was the best so far), and also kind of confusing at times.
Asano just went and dropped a lot of content and information on us when it comes to the geopolitical aspects of the story, and we didn't get to see that much of our main loved characters. But I guess that had to happen, since the end seems to be fast approaching.
After all, there's only twelve hours to go until the end of humanity...
A kind of apocalyptic but character-driven sci-fi story where the end of the world approaches as aliens have been hovering in a ship above Tokyo. When the invaders initially came in, there was some death and destruction, but since that point it's just been up there hovering, those these cute little aliens seem to be causing geo-political paranoia (okay, and some real concern because of the initial entry into the system. In subsequent volumes, things sort of go back to usual, as the teens in the series buy clothes and food and develop crushes and continue in school.
But what also happens is that these intruders get abused, and some of out teens protest intruder abuse, and political frictions by this, volume ten, seem to be spreading across the world. The Big Four seem to be vying for power edge as what appears to be the possible End of the World. We learn that there might be only twelve hours to go before the end.. . . In general we see no aggressive intent on behalf of the aliens, but we could all be wrong. Something has to happen soon. It's character-driven and family-oriented, with some humor and political satire even as the end approaches. Can real destruction actually happen? I have volume 11 here as well. . ..
We are nearing the end and the stakes are high. I really disliked Koharumaki. He's psychopathic and every times he shows up I feel awful.
There are political tensions that are realistic in the most depressing ways. Juxtaposed to that, the gang is enjoying their free time at the beach. Though there are underlying unspoken secrets that culminated in a cliff hanger at the end.
The finale is near (probably). Our main crew is still enjoying their summer vacation except for Ouran who is currently navigating the messy feelings of love she has for Oba as he prepares to head off back to Tokyo to stop the ship exploding. We are also seeing multiple plotlines coming to their bloody climaxes. The Youth United Front leader has killed Takarada, the pacifists have missed their chance to hurt the country's leaders, and the PM has been ousted because his government leaders no longer need him. Basically facades are coming down, and so is the spaceship. Where this will all lead, I can only assume death. The multiple casts coming together though is exciting to see and also somewhat disheartening. But here we go, towards the finale.

With only two volumes left, I can’t shake the feeling that this series might ultimately leave a lot to be desired, story-wise. The sense of impending doom that’s been hinted at in the last few volumes finally seems to be coming to fruition, setting the world on a precarious path.
However, as we start to learn more about the invaders, it feels underwhelming. I was expecting their arrival to carry more weight or significance.
That said, this series still showcases Inio Asano’s genius. Even without a groundbreaking plot, he captivates readers through his stunning artwork and deeply engaging characters.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Asano's skill as a storyteller and artist is nothing short of astonishing. Things felt like like they really came together in this volume and the end is looming.
I don't want this series to end, so hope there are a few more volumes at least. Another five would keep me happy.
Definitely nearing the end, feels like somewhere around the time he wrote these chapters he was given the warning that he needs to wrap it up. So many characters who were introduced then disppeared many volumes ago have made a reappearance. Was a struggle to refamiliarize myself with them
