The Haunting of The Lost Traveller Tavern

Rate this book

Lauren bought an old tavern. It was the perfect opportunity for a sea-change. True, it needed a bit of renovation but that was only expected. If only she had not stayed at that dirty B&B, because someone must have slipped acid into her sugar cube. Everything would be back normal once the effects subsided, wouldn’t it?

The Lost Travellers Tavern had been vacant for a decade when Lauren bought it. It needed a lot of work, but she could cope with that. She could deal with odd noises, strange events, entirely black spots and even the deepest cold she had ever encountered. But then there was Loomis, the groundskeeper, who refused to enter the house on account of the ‘thems.’

In exasperation Lauren attempts to shake off the worst of it and wait for things to get better…until she sees the floating head. Will Lauren survive the perils of the tavern, or will she too, like those before her, succumb and fade into history.

Lauren leaves her life in London behind and buys a tavern in the Highlands, The Lost Traveller Tavern. From the very beginning she feels haunted: Meow, Laugh, Piano (bit repetitive over the pages). Is she getting bonkers? What's behind those haunts? Who are "Thems" and how can they be stopped? Mabel, an elderly resident, tells Lauren a story of murder in the 50s. The book is okay but tedious at parts. You get an eerie feeling and some chapters are too the point but overall the story is a bit too average. The author could have made more of the back story. So everything remained a bit on the surface. For fans of mild horror, Scotland and haunted houses/pubs definitely worth a glance.

This was quite an interesting story and kept me reading to the last page. I don't understand why Lauren didn't run for the hills when things started to happen in the tavern as I can't imagine any sane person wanting to stay there.
I'm giving The Haunting of the Lost Traveller Tavern three stars as I think just a little more editing wouldn't go amiss because of the many typos.
However, I'm intrigued enough to buy the second of Ms Knight's ghost stories, The Haunting of Gatesworld Manor. I found the preview quite compelling.

Non stop action in another good haunting

,The author draws the reader into the development of the main character Lauren. who is determined to turn an old tavern into a profitable place of business Despite the reputation and the noises in the old place, Lauren fights the spirits that are against her. I recommend this book and look forward to more by this author.

Spectral Killers...

Quite an interesting take on the 'haunted item' theme.

A knife previously used in a murder or three.... maybe.

A lady takes over a tavern in Scotland to escape her past, but it's been closed for years and supposedly haunted. Will she be able to find out the truth before she opens for business?

Cat takes us on a journey with limited characters, but plenty information, throughout. An intruiging journey and a twist at the end.

An excellent read from Cat's mind as she gives us another helping of ghostly atmospherics and new haunted areas. Worthy addition to a lover of stories ussually meant for a dark night...with thunder for the backdrop

Just okay

I love your books and you are a favorite of mine but in just could not get into this book. There were parts I liked but others just didn't seem to go with the story. I hope others enjoy it. I am now going to another book of yours.

The book started out well, but had too many loose ends. It seems some important details to the story are left missing. The ending was very disappointing.

3.5 rounded down
Story about a haunted tavern. Good ghosts and bad ghosts. Again they are tethered by objects to haunt the place. Ending has me asking if they really left though.

One thing this author’s works all have in common is her ability to create endlessly imaginative hauntings. She combines threads from the past and weaves them into the present to give us the whole cloth of a haunted place.

Lauren has a life she would rather leave behind, so she puts all she has into acquiring on old tavern to be her home and livelihood. Lauren cuts all ties with her past and former friends and dives into her new life headfirst.

Thankfully with her small budget, most things soon check out to be functional. However, from the first day she begins to hear odd noises, a cat’s meow when she can find no cat, music from the old piano in the ballroom when no one is playing. Aside from her own experiences, the plumber comes upon an old man asleep in the armchair in one of the rooms. When they search room by room, there is no sign of the old gent!

The grounds are lovely, thanks to the old groundkeeper, Loomis, who she inherited from the bank she made her purchase from. But Loomis refuses to set foot inside the building. He says the voices are too strong inside! Is he just some strange old character, or could something unseen reside within?

Lauren can’t afford to have any problems. This is it; she has nowhere else to go. She must find a way to reconcile all of the tavern’s quirks before opening. What will she do if she isn’t the only one living there?

It is a short and easy read, and a atmospheric one. I did enjoy the book but for my it is a short story rather than a book. Due to its size their is limited time to delve into the characters and so we know stuff has happened but we never find out what. If you are okay with that and you just what to whizz through an easy read which is a little scary - do it.

Hmm

Some very strange language in this book. Confusion between England, Scotland and Britain too. Interesting story but I found lots of the syntax and word choice off putting.

Here Kitty Kitty

Lauren buys the Lost Traveller Tavern after the real estate agent sends her a few pictures. She has fled to this part of Scotland to start fresh. The Tavern has been closed up for quite a few years so she has a bit to do to get it ready to open. She starts seeing and hearing things that can't be there. Is the place haunted? Lauren doesn't believe in ghosts. Yep, this is a creepy story. Perfect for folks that love chilling mysteries.

Excellent! Super creepy!

This is a terrific read for lovers of ghost stories. Almost a cliffhanger, there could be more to tell if the author was so inclined. Well done!
