David L. Golemon (a.k.a. David Lynn Golemon ) is the author of the Event Group Thrillers, including Event, Ancients, Leviathan and Primeval. Legend, the second book in the series, was nominated for a RITA award for paranormal fiction.

Golemon learned an early love of reading from his father, who told him that the written word, unlike other forms, allows readers to use their own minds, the greatest special effects machines of all—an idea Golemon still believes. The only thing he loves more than writing is research, especially historical research, and he sees the subtext of his Event novels as being that understanding history allows us to create a better future. Golemon grew up in Chino, California, and now makes his home in New York.

This series of books right from the first has been a series that kept pushing outrageous assertations and has been able to bring the reader around with a solid explanation and while stretching the imagination the story always falls into the area of the plausible.

This novel is also quite in the area and the rationale put in the story is understandable. The only thing that has bugged me with this story is that while the initial story was well paced with suitable details for all the new characters and a lot of time devoted to the villainous intents of the Russian's as well as the extreme Grey the supervillain of this piece; the last quarter of this book on many occasions seemed jumpy with a lot of details missing and somehow unsatisfactory. It almost seemed as if there was a deadline pressure to complete the story and as a reader I felt a loss of continuity. Some of the story points stretch the realms of imagination like the age of the Witch and how the Grey managed to fuel its survival for ten thousand years with its own body and considering that it had its acolytes, why did it have to have any alliance with the Russian, considering that its ruthlessness knew no bounds and power seemingly unlimited.

All the i's are dotted and the t's crossed but for a reader who has been following the series closely, the death of an important character from this story, the witch's death did not get much of a mention. Even the demise of the Grey was too easy considering the reams written about it's powers in the book. Even the death of a principal character was short although it could have a bearing on subsequent books so is forgivable. Matchstick's role which was considered vital to this story and was a resurrection is also not woven well into the last few pages of the story.

All in all the story was magnificent as always and the challenges worth the efforts of the Event group but the ending was a little too quick.

The story starts with a Russian rover exploring the dark side of the moon for more alien technology and discovering a ten thousand year old prison ship with a still alive Grey, a find that is of major significance for the power hungry committee which is holding the reins of Russia.
On the other hand we have a continuation from the previous book which ended with a cliffhanger where the body of Matchstick, the Green alien a friend of the Event group missing from his grave and looking like he walked away.
As expected the team gets into action to find their friend and understand the dynamics of his disappearance. We have the easy banter of the team when they are moving around in search of links to the group that subsequently kidnaps Matchstick and a member of their team. Roping in another group arch-nemesis turned grudging friend Henri into the mix and we have a rollicking adventure in our hands and a story that leads us to the dawn of time and the legend of the fallen angel, Asmodius. The story achieves biblical proportions and holds the interest of the reader fueling imaginations.
The Russian's hitting out at the group forms the other parts of the story.

This is overall a good thriller and gives a good return on time invested.

A recommended reading.

Story ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ proofreading ⭐

The story was excellent! The " proofreading " a joke!

First PLURALS ARE NOT MADE WITH AN APOSTROPHE!!
Using homonyms interchangeably is not appropriate! For example " feint" and "faint"or "waste and waist"!!
At locatiob 433 chocking and choking are different.
At 447, should be number 9 ,not 10.
At 518 should be Marilyn not Marylin
1764 " bound hand AND ( not "a") foot"
1794 "her and Alice" should be "she"
1810" her and Garrison" should be " she"
4571 three should be threw
4630 "to shoot" is repeated
4815 uses "does" instead of "do"
There were many more!
This is the second book by a major publisher to have such egregious errors!
If someone was actually paid to proofread this, that person is incompetent!
I have read, and enjoyed, all of the previous books. While one or two errors are understandable, this is outrageous!

Based on the title, I wasn't sure what I would think of this book. It turned out to be a real blast. It closed the loop on some outstanding questions in a couple of really fulfilling ways.

Story ruined by countless spelling and grammar mistakes

Love this series. It seems like no one took the time to proofread the book. Inexcusable! Felt like it was written by someone not familiar with English.

Proof reading

The story was very entertaining. I have read all of the event series. The characters are some of my all time favorites...The reason for 3 stars is because there were errors on almost every page, I had to re-read some sentences twice to have them make sense, definitely takes away from the story. Can't find the book in the store now so I'm assuming they have pulled it to make corrections. Too late for me. Disappointed, feel I deserve a credit as this was a $10.00 book.

Season Of The Witch is the final novel in the Event Group series, or so rumor has it. While I have my doubts, the body count of heroes may suggest so. On the other hand, I have a feeling…

What really doesn’t surprise me about this story is the extremely poor editing. While I forked out $30 for a special order hardback through Barnes & Noble, I expected it to be cleaned up somewhat better than the Kindle version, which I’ve heard is atrocious. While I can say it IS much better, the overall quality is still laughably amateurish.

We’re not talking about mere spell check here, folks. We’re talking about technical grammar errors, wrong words in the wrong places, incomplete sentences, the list goes on.

He continually references the word pentacle with a four pointed star. While technically accurate (a pentacle refers to a talisman or symbol, no relation to five), in reference to Witches, at least modern day Witches, it’s usually a five pointed star. In fact, the cover even shows it as a five pointed star, which may be a discrepancy in either the artwork, or his references. Given that witches are predominant within the story, and Salem has a big part, that’s kind of pushing things. Of course, there’s the matter of age of the head Witch, which also blurs the lines of technicality. I have to give him a pass on that one, but still, it kept coming up over and over again and gave me pause.

Then there was the 94 miles from Las Vegas at Lake Mead. As the crow flies, there IS no place on Lake Mead, 94 miles from Las Vegas. However, by road, there are several places that would fit the bill and I’m pretty sure I know which place he’s talking about. My astronomy club does a star party there once in a while. In reality, it’s only about 30 miles as the crow flies. The thing is, both teams that went after Matchstick flew in Blackhawks from Nellis. While there ARE Blackhawks at Nellis, the trip to someplace like Nelson’s landing would take probably ten minutes? Maybe a few more. That would about coincide with the length of an average thunderstorm around here. I say here because I live right outside Nellis AFB so I know the area pretty well. I have to again, give him a pass on that one, but it did give me pause again.

Because of the lousy editing, I’m always on high alert for technical errors, even though on most books, I usually don’t worry or care about them. I bring these two things up because I called him on it, checked and found he was within the boundaries of believability, even though I don’t normally do that with an author.

Now, as for major characters dying? To tell the truth, I could care less.

Why?

The author, while writing in solid third-person, past-tense, also writes with no point of view whatsoever. The point of view is a complete free-for-all. With a cast of thousands, he head-hops with abandon, sometimes from sentence to sentence, let alone paragraph to paragraph.

I have no emotional investment in any of the characters. So, if one or many of them die, I don’t care.

All I care about is the story. In that, I’ll admit I had a lot of fun, and with the brisk narrative, no rambling, plenty of action and humor, I had a good time.

If not for constantly being jerked out of the story by bad writing, and not caring about any of the characters, this would’ve been a killer read.

Others have said he needs to fire his editors. I’ve been saying that since I read his first book when he was with a major publisher. Someone also needs to give him lessons in point of view so I can care about his characters. I’ve been saying that all along, but to no avail.

Oh well…I still buy his books and still enjoy the story. I wish him the best and look forward to the next one, whatever it may be. It doesn’t look like anything will change, so I have to take it as it is, and just try and overlook all the flaws. There’s still some good out of all of this.

In advance, I apologize for my English, it is not my mother tongue and this book is not in Spanish, far as I know. Since I read in English, the review will be in the same language.

I’m going to end up re-reading this book soon, and these are the two main reasons: I have to wait for the next one to come out, (Confirmed by the author) and Henri was a total badass, dark hero!!! I Love this character so much.

Now, reading about the deaths was hard! Especially because they don’t usually lose their key people, the author likes the happy endings lol, so I kept expecting something to happen that would bring back the fallen, like using the Dorway from The Traveler, for instance. But our characters are too noble, sometimes so much that they don’t seem too real to me. Partly the reason why Henri is my favorite, but I'll go back to this in a bit.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster! It broke my heart because we lose one of the coolest characters but, on the other hand, I didn’t see any other outcome for him after what he lost.

It saddens me that we didn’t get to see the background of the witches, these characters were underdeveloped and honestly, they could’ve had so a rich story, based on the American history and culture of Salem and all. The attitude from some of the soldiers, like Ryan (this guy just got more annoying with each book, too angry and disrespectful) and sadly, Jack; was a huge letdown. I mean, dude, you just traveled through time and to another dimension! You have a tiny little alien friend and air-bending children! Seriously? They could’ve been more open-minded, considering everything they have seen.

The ending was just amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. That was one horrible loss and I can’t wait to see the outcome and how it will affect my two heroes, what will happen with them after this. Master of the World can’t come soon enough.

**
Now, about Henri and Jack. They do begin as a total antagonist, the exact opposite of each other and in a way, they still are. Jack is full of light and is so righteous but there’s a darkness in him that allows him to do what he does best.

Henri, on the other hand, is often described as an opportunist, a “liar of major proportions”, a mercenary, and a thief. So, you’d say he’s basically a total douchebag with no redeeming qualities but give it to Sarah to become the window that would allow us to see the other side of him. The honor, the kindness, and in general a tiny bit of light still in him.

So, the way I see them, Jack and Henri are the opposite and yet the same. The body count throughout the whole series is becoming too much of weight and wearing down on Jack and sending him to a really dark place, while Henri seems to be coming back into whomever he was before he became a thief. I mean, he was a soldier and made it Colonel, there’s a sense of duty, service there. Once a Soldier, Always a Soldier, or so I’ve heard.

During this book, we see him as a leader, and even Jack calls him a good guy. This duo is truly amazing and so fun to watch but after the revelations of the last book, in Mongolia, they end up in a bad place and it looked like Henri might’ve lost any warm feelings toward the Group, but during this book, he does stay with them, and hey, he does it for free! Sort of! Lol.

Although it’s difficult to say after this ending, I do hope we get more books after Master of the World. This last death might prove to be way too much for Jack. ¿But what about the others? And how would Henri fit in? if he keeps burning bridges in his field of endeavor for the sake of the Group, he might not have anywhere else to go, and that would be a MAjOR turn of events. Can’t wait, fingers crossed!

Overlord was supposed to be the conclusion of the Matchstick Man story, but obviously Golemon found more. Since I like Matchstick, I’m glad he did.

At first, it’s secret Russian shadow government vs. secret American military think tank. After the war with the Greys, the Russians found something on the back of the moon and are keeping it to themselves. While back in Dept 5656, Matchstick’s grave has been vandalized and his body is gone.

But then the story unfolds into another battle in the ancient millennial war between the human and alien good forces against the human and alien bad forces.

I loved this book in spite of all the errors (see footnotes). It has wonderful characters. But be prepared for heartbreak at the end.

Footnote: 1) I’ve been keeping track of the people, things and events of this series on an Excel page, especially the cool, but confusing underground complex. In a previous book they have the Cryptology labs on level 31. In this book the department is on level 87 which is below the artifact vaults. Why the move? Or is this a continuity error?

2) Needed better editing, there’s a lot of errors. Sometimes the wrong plural or a left out word (‘Xavier managed to drop ‘it’ into her free hand’) or an added letter. Mostly usage of the wrong word. i.e.: Ryan: then he realized the “feint’ nor faint. ‘Farbeaux’ produced a small rubber stopped ‘vial, not vile’. Jack: we can start thinning out your ‘herd, not heard’. Those are just a few in the middle that I found after trying to ignore most of the errors earlier in the book. But they got to be too regular not to mention.

Fave scenes: the monkey in the bait shop, the Presidential visit, the computer intern’s idea and Jenks declaration and testimony of love.

I heard about the proofreading issues...read it anyway so it didn't phase me too much. The story is absolutely entertaining and the characters up to their old tricks as always...but there was a foreboding feeling throughout that something significant was going to happen.

I'm giving this only 3 stars not because of the editing issues, but because if anything the story felt a little rushed...almost like it was supposed to be part 1 of 2. The pacing was a little off at times and some of the characters spent too much time on the sidelines.

The world the Event Group inhabits is one full mystery and intrigue and the book does a very good job of expanding on that...but I still like there was room for more. With that said, knowing some of the problems Mr. Golemon was facing over the last year, I can overlook the negative points. But I do wish he would "recall" this one and re-release a "new edition" with just that little extra to bridge the gaps.

Well worth reading regardless.

I have been invested in this series since the first book. I have grown to like all the main characters and cried in a few of these books when characters were lost. I put off on reading this series because this was the last one he has made and didn't want the series to end.

I read somewhere he was going to write another one after this book, but have not heard anymore about it. This is one series I would read again. It's a mystery/supernatural series involving military and war.
I'm sad that this had to end. I just hope somewhere in the future we can read about Jack Collins and his team again.

This is a great series David L. Golemon and highly praise it to anyone who might be interested in this type of read/genre.

OK but Underdone and Chaotic

I've followed the Event Group novels since the first. This is the first that missed the mark. It seemed that the author was trying to tie up too many loose ends and throw in the new element if witches. Sadly, it was way too rushed and many interesting characters were underdeveloped and tossed aside to rush to the finish. I really hope this isn't the end of the series and that the author gets back to form with the follow up. Adding insult to injury, the Kindle version of the book was very poorly edited with lots and lots of typos and wrong words. Hopefully, someone will do a clean-up pass before too many more people download it.

Ending is such a letdown

Talk about letdown. I feel like Wil-E-Coyote just aimed a tanker stuffed with fireworks at RR and watched the fuse fizzle in the rain.
The characters and intrigue was built up nicely but the final “battle” between 2 Super natural forces turned into 5 minute yelling match with ZERO involvement from the bad guy!!! Like how do you even do that? Build up the ancient baddie for the whole book and then he doesn’t do anything in the end??? And our intrepid heroes don’t do a damn thin other than shoot to not kill a few drug addicts??
You can’t just randomly off a few loved ones and consider it an intriguing novel with plot twists.
Very disappointed.

I truly enjoyed the story. I have enjoyed each book of the series. There is only one reason I gave it 2 stars.... the editing.

The horrible editing made it a very hard read. Spelling errors, very simple spelling errors were on every page. If someone - say an editor that's getting paid to do their job - would have even glanced at the book, a lot of these could have been fixed before it was available to the public.

I'm hoping they release a better copy so the next readers can truly enjoy the book they spend money on.

I, for one, am a little disappointed that I paid for this one.

I absolutely love The Event Group. This book really put me on an emotional roller coaster. I was excited when old friends returned but devastated with other revelations. The history of this conflict was enthralling and made it difficult to put down. The men and women of the Group definitely had their work cut out for them and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next story. My only complaint is the editing was a bit lacking. The story held up well enough that the mistakes didn’t jar me out of it, but there were a lot of mistakes.

Let me begin by saying this book almost got five stars. The story was very entertaining and it bought a lot of past elements together well. There were some some parts that were hard to get through because I've gotten invested in these characters.

The reason I can't give 5 stars is because the publisher needs to find a new proofreader. This book was littered with spelling and grammatical error. Some sentences were nonsensical fragments of two rewritten thoughts.

Also David L. Golemom writes "thus far" way too often. But that's just me being picky.

I have this book only 2 stars because the editing is so bad, it's hard to concentrate on the story. Honestly, it's as if it was translated by someone who doesn't speak English. But the syntax is wild, the grammar is just wrong. But other than that, it was a very good story

Golemon is a very good story teller, and this is one of my favorites. I just hope a cleaned up version becomes available

A fantastic installment in the Event Group Series pitting Col. Jack Collins and Department 5656 against its nefarious counterpart, the Committee, and more specifically, Mr. Sokol and his extraterrestrial partner, Asmodius. I will not spoil it, but the end of the book comes with many great loses on both sides.

While I look forward to the next installment, I wonder what will Mr. Golemon think up next?

I hope that the Event Group series is not over soon.

Another great book

Horrible editing though. Obviously done with software versus human proofreading! BETh's instead of BDU's as in uniforms. Main is not a state! Lots of words that sound alike but are spelled differently used incorrectly! Really hard to enjoy reading with so many errors!

Give stars for the book, ONE star for the execution.

Oh, drat it

The book was great, as usual. But gee, will there be another? I don't see how, but you are a great writer and I figure you can do it. Just don't leave Matchstick hanging, what about him.
The book was never out of my hand from the first word I read. I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

Excellent

I have been reading these books since the first one was published and have thoroughly enjoyed every single one. I only have one problem. Please, pleas, please get someone to edit them. The spelling and incorrect word usage was horrendous. I noticed and I only have an eighth grade education. But as I said the story is great as always.

Well this is another solid Event Group novel. Not Asimov but very enjoyable. However, the grammar in David's novels is often filled with mistakes. Whoever edits for this needs to find a new line of work! It's to the point of distraction, in this day 'n age, most irritating.
Still, well worth the read, I look forward to the next one.

As much as I love the book and the series, there are still some issues that I have to address. The Event group has seen so many things in their lifetime. Yet, when confronted with something rather basic, they are shocked. And the main bad guy in the book powers seems to fluctuate. Otherwise, it was still a great book and a great series.

Love the entire Event books and this was another good read. Only gave it four stars because I thought this story line was really difficult to believe. It was just a little too far out there so not the kind of story I normally read. But more than that the editing of the book was just awful. Particularly the last quarter of the book. Grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors were all over the place. Golemon would do everyone a huge favor by finding himself and his readers a new editor.

Ancient Enemy

Loved this story as much as the rest in Event Group thrillers.
Very good read.
The proofreading or editing on this book was a read to behold.
I’ve never seen so many errors on any book I’ve read.
Having said that, the book and story were fantastic.

Not my favorite of this series. You do have to read these with a suspension of belief, but this one seemed to take more of that than the others. The eBook also has many typos and grammatical errors that detract from the reading.

Ditto

Others have said it. Fun story, but what on Earth is going on with the grammar? It's like Golemon dictated the story into voice recognition software (accounting for the incorrect homophoned) and the publisher ran with it. Pay me to proofread!
