This tasseomancy guide includes standard fare such as the legend of the discovery of tea, tea drinking history, how to perform a tea leaf reading, and an index of common symbols and interpretations. The book seems intended more for those looking to set themselves up as professional teacup readers/mediums rather than solitary, dare I say casual, readers like me. There are some lovely looking recipes included, along with a few charming line drawing illustrations. My main beef (hence the deduction of two stars) is how self-serving for the authors the entire book comes off: it starts with detailed bios of the pair, who are styled as "prominent" witches on the Salem scene and beyond, and constantly refers to their mediumship/events businesses. I soon got very tired of hearing about their annual tea leaf reading events and how wonderfully successful (and accurate) they are; it reads as a booklong advertisement for their professional services. In all, this volume is not an unwelcome addition to my witchy bookshelf; however, I think the subject is better and more succinctly presented in Sasha Fenton's "Tea Cup Reading".

This book is incredible. The combination of rituals and customs of a bygone era, storytelling, and straightforward practical instructions makes this book the quintessential practical handbook for anyone wanting to tap into this ancient form of divination. The authors have successfully applied their skill and years of experience to create a brilliant and accessible handbook for everyone, regardless of experience. As I read, I envisioned how easy it will be for me to share this book with friends and co-workers who may or may not be witches. It’s that universal. Although a practitioner of cartomancy for the most part of four decades, I have never been drawn to the practice of tasseomancy—until now. Sandra and Leanne instantly drew me in and made me want to put the kettle on to brew some tea and get down to the business of Reading the Leaves.

More of a 3.5 for a variety of reasons. It has a lot of anecdotal stories of guests they've had and heavily focuses on the supernatural and seeing into the future. That doesn't mean it isn't interesting if you view things through a psychological lens.

On the positive, it does give you a how-to on reading leaves and how the position in the cup is relevant. It's easy to follow and fairly in depth on their methods, even being a short read (roughly 125 pages, then a chapter on exercises, which I fully appreciate, and chapter 12 is all recipes.) it has a nice glossary of symbols in the back too.

I took off a star and a half for a couple reasons. First, the instructions for tea leaf reading (step by step) feels like it's missing a step. They tell you to flip the cup into the saucer upside-down but never to remove it or flip it over again. Small, I know, but since my job entails user-experience and usability, it's an issue for me. It leaves unnecessary questions for the novice, even if it seems like a 'common sense' thing to do. Never assume. Second, on page 110 it felt odd how the entire book read in more of a 'telling' style with 'we' and 'our' and 'us,' (interjections as well in italics and first person) then we get a line "Leanne and Sandra painstakingly...." which just threw me off. Finally, the bibliography. It's all links to various websites. I expected some scholarly sources for the 'brief history of tea' section, but found none. Not a major deal, so long as you know. You’re probably not reading this book for historical accuracy.

Overall, it's basically a compilation of Google searches (obvious by the sources), their experience, and personal stories. It's a decent reference book and adds an added layer of interest to your tea time, if you're looking for that. If you’re more into the psychological side or supernatural it gives you another activity to garner whatever insights you’re searching for - deep in the subconscious or spiritual. Oh, and one more thing, but I feel it's necessary to mention because of the constant references to Salem, MA; those who died under suspicious of witchcraft were not really/likely practicing witches. I realize the entire town has been conflated with witches and the craft, but I often wonder how the accused/murdered would view our outlook on them today.

This book is a fun introduction to the art of reading tea-leaves. Written by two women, who run tasseography sessions in Salem, Massachusetts, it's not only a good introduction, but it's written by experienced practitioners too.
The book starts with a history of the practice, continues into a how-to segment (complete with a few sample cups to read), before adding in some tea-time recipes and an extensive symbol dictionary.
They've annotated it throughout with their own comments and observations, while keeping the book relatively compact (making it a great size for taking to a tea-room if you want!).
If you have ever been intrigued by the idea of tasseomancy, or are just curious, then this is a good place to begin.

What an amazing read! As someone who used to devour books as a child and has somehow now *lost* that ability, I flew through this book! It was a joy to take in. Extremely personable and full of heart and passion. These ladies not only know what they’re talking about, they present it in a clear and engaging way. From the history, to the guidance and the bonus recipes at the end! Because of this book, world is going to be full of tea leaf readers for certain!!

Worth the read! It's quick to get through but detailed and well written. There is an entire chapter dedicated to training psychic abilities in children which was not useful to me, but also well written. It did list multiple signs of ADHD and/or autism as psychic indicators, which is a little concerning considering this was not a noted fact. If it was, I wouldnt be noting it here. It's something to be aware of.

Such an amazing book! The book is incredibly detailed so it gives great insight for beginners as well as adds perspective for people that have been reading leafs before. You really can’t go wrong! Plus the recipes are so cute and I can’t wait to try making some! Sandra and Leanne did a phenomenal job and I really can’t recommend this book enough.

I loved this book. It was super informative. It wasn't heavy on stories but told them only when it applied and would further your knowledge and understanding. They didn't repeat themselves alot. It was a fun read. It even has some exercises to do so you can master what you have learned. Love love love it!

I’m docking a star because it took me so long to read, but this was a truly enjoyable book! The wear and tear from the weeks I carried it around with me and the army of little blue tabs I’ve massacred it with mark it as well-read and well-received. I look forward to taking what I’ve learned from Sandra and Leanne into the rest of my practice!

I took a course with a friend on tea leaf reading last month, but they didn’t get into any of the symbols so I sought out a book. I bought two books , but this one is the best and is the only book you need for tea leaf reading in my opinion as it covers everything. I also liked the vibes of the two witches (women) who wrote it and I hope to go to their shop in Salem one day! ☕️

This was really quite a fun read and I can't wait to try tasseography on my own. I would've loved for there to have been more examples and exercises, but I suppose you learn by doing. Even though I'm unlikely to follow the recipes myself, I love the concept of incorporating witchcraft into cooking.

This was such a fun book! As someone who's dabbled in tea leaf reading before, it was a great way to re-introduce myself to this magical practice! I also loved the recipes at the end, and know I will be trying at least a handful of them, especially the Lavender honey cookies!

Reading the Leaves makes tea leaf reading easy, relatable, and fun! There's so much to dive into and I've already been able to read myself and a few friends. 10/10 would recommend.

Pretty thorough with some great techniques. More in depth than most of its kind but, still not quite the depth I am looking for. Though, in-depth tasseomancy proves most difficult to find.

The information it's about okay
But it actually annoys the hell out of me when a book has several pages of unrelated information.

Finally sat back down and took a lot of notes with this book. A lot of tasseography information is a lot of repeats, but was able to gather a refined list to the symbols and other meanings found in the cup. Great for anyone who may need an intro!

I found this to be quite an interesting read, especially since I didn't know much of anything about Tasseomancy. However, this little book is great at giving you a quick introduction, but relatively comprehensive (in my very limited experience) guide to get you off and running if you want to start practicing. The explanations are clear, concise and orderly, but my favorite part is the practice "cups" that they give you to try out.
