Celtic Brooch #10

The Topaz Brooch

Rate this book
In 1814, I took a little trip... Due to the subject matter (pirates and war), this story contains violence, sexually explicit scenes, and adult language and may be considered offensive to some readers.

Starring Rick O’Grady and Billie Malone, with David and Kenzie, Pete and Sophia, and introducing Cajun Remy Benoit and special guest stars General Andrew Jackson and the pirate Jean Lafitte.

THE ADVENTURE: In New Orleans to speak at the annual conference of the National Association for Catering & Events, former Army Ranger Billie Malone decides to swing by an estate sale, and can’t resist buying a magnificent topaz brooch.

Later in the day, while admiring her purchase, she triggers the magic, is whisked back in time to Barataria in 1814, and is drawn into the Battle of New Orleans, and the escalation of an ancient, ongoing war with powerful, global combatants.

WOW! This is without a doubt the most ambitious of the Celtic Brooch series books yet. It is 758 pages long and jam packed with history, romance and tension. It is always impressive how much historical research Katherine Lowry Logan must accomplish in order to incorporate and weave real historical figures and historic events into the story lines of her books. In this case, the Battle of New Orleans of 1814 was the historical setting where a rag-tag group of Americans battle a superior British force in defense of New Orleans. Heading the poorly equipped U.S. Army is Major General Andrew Jackson (who later became the future seventh President of the U.S. as a result of this victory) against Major General Sir Edward Pakenham's British troops. French pirate, smuggler and privateer Jean LaFitte, along with his cut throat pirates, are recruited with promises and do more than help the Americans win the Battle. Without their help, it was surely doomed to failure. Their vibrant, quirky, dangerous personalities are all brought to glorious life by the author's vivid writing in her descriptions of their meetings, the horrific sights and sounds of the battle and the aftermath. Their individual relationships with our main characters were complex and lifelike, but worked seamlessly. All of this is the backdrop where several of our beloved characters from past books, as well as expanding the roles of two new characters, is where our story takes place. And, it is a doozy! Ms. Lawry Logan already warned her rabid readers that there was going to be violence and raw language in this book, so I was prepared. When there are pirates involved, what do you expect? There is also the fact that our two main characters, Billie Malone and Rick O'Grady, are two former military who are deep in denial about their PTSD. Their struggles with PTSD cause problems from the get go. And, for a time I though famed artist Sophia Orsini (from "The Pearl Brooch") was turning into another Jack Mallory ("The Broken Brooch" and "The Diamond Brooch"). I will leave the reader to find out what happens there. The entire book is moving toward a climatic ending that will answers some questions to the history of the Celtic Brooches and open up more mysteries at the same time. It is an epic, outstanding book in this fantastic series. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Bring on the next book!!!

A good ride to the past

I have mixed emotions as to how to score this book. Story-wise it's a 4, characters are a +4, but the excessive foul language (not all for emotional stressing) and the crude horniness was at a 3.
That said, I'm a staunch Brooch lover so I Had to read it. I do enjoy the history trips and know that I can bank on the researched accuracy. Meeting Jean Lafite was special as I have an uncle born I New Orleans whom was rumored to be related. Now I see it wasn't Jean but could have been one of his brothers. I've always liked cowboy Rick and to "hear" him sing and be so romantic and caring was a treat. I do so hope he and Penny can curb their language in the future, especially with so many children in the books.
This was really two books in one, thanks for figuring out more about the brooches and keepers. I'm still confused but there will be "more on the other side" .
How about a story set in Scotland some time? That would fit my genealogy. Maybe concerning the family of our brawny Scotsmen's history.

Mind blowing, AMAZING adventure!

Of all the books in this series I can honestly say this is by far my FAVORITE!!!! Chock full of adventure and twists and turns all throughout. Throw in some extremely cool pirates along the way, BROOCH hijinx galore and you have yourself the start of a good tale. So much excitement takes place here. Be warned however....you MUST have read all previous books in said series or you'll have no clue who everyone is or major plot points in the story. We revisit old friends and family, and possibly gain a few new ones along the way. I adore how women in this series have strength, huge hearts and are fierce in every way! The only downside I can find is I'm ALREADY desperate to see which brooch is up next, what adventure it takes them on and WHO the brooch is intended for?!? Until then I shall have to re-read all the gems that came before this 😉. ENJOY!!!

First, I hate writing reviews, but I have to leave one for this book (and series). This is the best brooch book to date! This series started out as fun ‘brain candy for me. Brain candy is what I call the fun, light romances I enjoy reading. In the romance department, the author uses a formula that you see acted out successfully in each book. However, Ms. Logan’s writing is evolving. Her plots are becoming more nuanced and intricate and her characters are constantly challenged. The author has created a wonderful world filled with beautiful, but flawed people. PTSD is a reoccurring theme that is personally helping me. All the characters are superheroes in there own right but they all have weaknesses, make mistakes, and stumble. I too suffer from horrible PTSD and the very nature of the disease is to alienate and shut down. Ms. Logan’s other characters encourage and support one another and PTSD support groups help too. This has inspired me to get more help too. I just wish I had the friends and family members from the book for myself. I noticed one reader complained in her review about the language/ cussing in this book. It’s not extraneous or even unnecessary, it’s authentic. Many of the characters are soldiers and they’re placed in horrifying positions. Polite and proper conversation isn’t realistic. Gritty situations call for gritty language. I know when my PTSD is flaring and I’m angry all of the time, f!&@ is my favorite word! I really identify with Billie/Penny. I too am trying to figure out how/ who I want/need to be. (To Ms. Logan: Please don’t tone down your writing for the haters. You used ample warnings and if people don’t like it, they can go read some sanitized dribble.)

This book has real merit as a historical novel. Ms. Logan is obviously a thorough researcher. Even though her conversations with historical figures are fantasy, they fit what is known about that person’s character and are very believable. The author has been clever with merging 21st Century females and obviously less forward thinking historical males. The conversations, debates, and banter are clever, thought provoking and often humorous. The book before, The Pearl Brooch, was the first book to ever inspire me to want to learn more about the Founding Fathers. I love history, it’s fascinating, but I’ve never been interested in US history before WWII. I’m looking forward to learning more about the Pirate Lafitte too!

We’ve talked about romance and history but there’s another theme developing in the series. The battle between good and evil. Yep, this series is evolving from Brain Candy to books with more merit. I cannot wait to read more from Ms. Logan.

I love this series and when I started this book, I couldn't put it down. Yes, it was darker then her other stories in this wonderful series, but each story has presidents, wars, PSTD in them. this one just has more. Yes it has rape, but it also had compassion and tenderness. The old friends and family are still there. The writing was brilliant. Her research came out in every page. If I would have read these books in high school I would have been more involved in the history of our country. The romance just adds more spark. Can't wait now for the next book to come out.

Another great Brooch Series Book..with some criticism.

Oh I love The Brooch Series. I own them all. In the world of Kindle Unlimited this speaks volumes about me!! I feel like The Clan folks are personal friends to me while I read their adventures. However, this book was too long!! I love Rick and Billie/Penny but the over the top sex scenes and conversations seemed to be thrown in and tacked on to the side of the story. I have no issue with the language in the book. It seemed appropriate at the time. But the sex scenes were smutty and, sorry Katherine, vulgar. It ruined the romance that you usually are so eloquent with. I’m not a prude but I don’t think it was necessary to their love story. I understand “hot for you feelings”, but please, don’t write the future books with this level of sexual intensity. Please leave a little to the imagination. I don’t want to pass on future books. I am, Your Fan, Jan.

The Topaz Brooch

The storyline in this book is great. Ms. Logan has certainly done her background homework.

The constant overuse of the F bomb and GD word at least 100+ times was totally overrated and unnecessary. Then the over detailed sex scenes the last third of the book seemed to me a desperate attempt to make the book more interesting. For me, it was the exact opposite effect as I skipped a lot of pages in an attempt to escape the garbage. I

I really want to like her work as she puts much effort into the creative background information and beautiful details only to spoil it with filthy language ever constant detai!ed sex. I wouldn't go to a porn store to purchase books...not do I wish to read it in an ebook.

Best Brooch Book yet!

Topaz Brooch hits on some very scary and very personal subjects. PTSD is a common occurrence within the military and sexual assault victims alike. It takes time and the right people in your life to work through these traumas. Katherine captures this struggle of self doubt, hesitancy to achieve etc extremely well and makes these characters sing!!!! (In Rick's case literally ha)

I live with a retired Marine who is also a former Law Enforcement officer and let's talk about those traumas. I dont have to because Katherine did and portrayed this in a very lifelike and realistic manner

Her research on Jean Lafitte and the battle of New Orleans was intense and in depth. Jean was loveable and believeable. I could "see" through Katherine's words how Andrew Jackson got the nickname Old Hickory.

The scenes painted in the book were incomparable for the reality the displayed.

I couldn't put this book down literally. It sang to my soul on so many levels. I think at one time I told my husband. "Fuck! This is our marriage!" When Rick just wants to protect Pennie but doesn't discuss anything with her.

The view of Pete and Sophia's marriage/relationship was summed up so much more than in The Pearl. I really enjoyed seeing their love blossom.

Pennie and Rick dealt with some deep personal shit throughout this book and I became invested in their relationship vicariously so much so that I couldn't wait for that part in the ending where.....oops spoiler!

I had a book coma where my reality was not comfortable without Rick and Pennie for a couple of days.

Be prepared for a soul shaker, a boot Quaker, and a match made in heaven in this enjoyable ride of a book!

This was probably my least favorite of the Celtic Brooch books.

At 11%, the time travel had not started and I was bored. Please respect your readers a little better. How many times did you need to tell us that Rick wanted to be in a meaningful relationship. Preparing for travel in the previous books was interesting as details were provided. None of this in this one. I almost put it down at this point. Some of my frustration may have been because there are now so many characters who have been added to the family. Keeping them straight and floating back and forth took more bandwidth than I wanted to provide.

Too much graphic sex and language. I understand why Billie's character was so extravagant. Her language was part of her character but the graphic sex and was over the top. This was more a bodice ripper and to me it brought the book's value down a couple of steps.

The mysticism of the 'blue' men was a little out there but appreciated the explanation they provided. The power of the brooches, keeper and guardians makes more sense now. My initial rating would have been a two. It went up after this section but the graphic sex still keeps it low.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Each brooch book gets better and better. The only downside is waiting for the next one. The Topaz brooch has everything. Love, drama, heart pounding moments and family with some great sex scenes for your enjoyment. Well done. Keep them coming.
BTW nice twist at the end.

After 10 I'm ready for some diversity

I understand Scotland and Ireland being the focus here, but I'm a bit appalled by the lack of diversity in this series. There is not a single BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) character in NEW ORLEANS!? The characters are repetitive. Sophia was a nice change from the typical "badass" but every single woman is Type A? Every man is obsessed with protecting his property... Ahem I mean woman? Enslaved people are just freed long before the Civil War but none of them is important enough for a mention? The only black character, Sally Hemmings is mentioned like 4 times in a 700 page book? I stuck through all 10, hoping to see someone, anyone of color. NOT EVEN REMY IS. You missed the boat. He was a natural fit. I highly recommend reading stories about BIPOC, meeting BIPOC authors and highly considering your lens for the next books your write. I want to hear the stories of ALL my ancestors, not a whitewashed, glossed over version. I want to hear about a character who breaks your thin, beautiful, wealthy, christian, white mold. You've glossed over slavery in the South, the systematic murder of the Indigenous (crossed her legs indian style!?), and ignored the plight of Asian peoples in San Francisco. Please, in 2020 learn and DO BETTER.

I do appreciate how you haven't chosen all young characters, I think your understanding of white history and narratives are quite good, I'm just hoping that next time n all your research your find a character who doesn't look like you, who isn't a professional athlete, and who's life isn't controlled by an obsessive military/police presence. I want to see someone new!

Sincerely,
An Irish-Puerto Rican American

Oh my goodness! I didn't mind the foul language, as I have a potty mouth. However the gratuitous sex talk and as someone else said "horniness", was utterly ridiculous. It started to just become embarrassing to listen to and embarrassing for Rick!

I don't mind adult erotica, but there has to be a need for it. It has to fit the story line and fit the character. In this case, none of the above fit. It didn't fit the character, the story, the fact that they were soldiers with PTSD and were literally in the midst of another war! I'd imagine the constant sex thoughts would be the last thing on Rick's mind!

I think KLL wanted to try and please the people who wanted more erotica, however she couldn't have the characters actually have sex too early in the book. So she literally made Rick sound like a sex starved 16yo boy. A boy who has no control over his thoughts or erection! KLL tried to appease the erotica fans, but she failed miserably.

I love, love, love these books but I got to the a stage where I just didn't want to hear it any more! It definitely lost a couple of stars because of this

The Topaz Brooch is The Most Intense story I’ve read out of all The Brooch Series, by far! Rick O’Grady and Billie Malone are on one long and intense adventure, with their PTSD getting in their way at times. That is the only spoiler I’ll put out there.
Katherine Lowry Logan; this is your BEST out of all the Brooch Series, so far! I finished this story in a day, then turned around and started reading it again last night. I’m afraid I missed something!!
This story will wrap you up as you read it! My suggestion is to take your time with it. It is so full of history and intense danger, you’ll get lost in New Orleans, thinking you’re there inside the story. I became so thoroughly wrapped up in the story, I’m rereading it to make sure I didn’t miss anything.
Holy Wow!!! FANTASTIC BOOK!!! Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! TEN STARS!!

L.

Rick and Penny we weren't likeable and would not hold down a marriage for five mins with their attitude let alone soul mates for life. Loved all the previous couples. The plot otherwise was amazing as usual. Ridiculous sexual references - seemed to be pages of the contents of Ricks pants and the effect on his brains. Ugh! These books do not need to sink to this level to sell.
Lafitte's relationship with Penny was sensual and lovely on the other hand . I will read the next novel but if this sexual avarice and crudeness prevails count me out. Disappointed.

I don't know the difference between a book and a novel, but this amazing story is a novel! Katherine has done extensive research in so many fields to create a seamless story line (history, military, medical, art and design, food and wine). As in all her books, her characters (new and reoccurring) have issues that touch so many lives and futures.
Well done!!
Look forward to the book in the saga!

I don’t write reviews, but this book deserves the raves. I have to admit I was a little dubious starting this book because of the “warnings”. Although there was a lot of “extra color” in this swashbuckling tale, it was appropriate and not over the top.

The larger story arch is finally being revealed a piece at a time. So tantalizing. It keeps me coming back for more.

Cannot wait for the next adventure!

I listened to this on Audible.

I'm not sure why they changed narrators. Most of the books were by one narratior, then they changed it and she was pretty good. Not quite as good as the first, but she didn't require a period of adjustment to get used to the change. I think most of it was just there change.

This book, however, I almost put down because of the change. The sound affects are HORRIBLE and make it difficult to hear the narration, detracting from the story. The male narrator often made his accents so thick that I couldn't understand what he said at all. He tended to lower his voice when he did those as well, so it really made it difficult. I just didn't hear those parts. I listen while I'm driving, doing my chores, and frequently while I'm working. I can't be rewinding, increasing the volume, and slowing it down to try to make out what he was saying. He would also whisper when there were whispered dialogue, couldn't hear or make out those parts. Also couldn't make out the dialogue he did for those through doors, walls, etc. He just needed to read those in the regular volume. We know they were whispering, outside, or whatever because the book states this. This isn't a 20's radio story.

For a good portion of the book, from the beginning, there was also a difference in tone and volume between the narrators. The difference in volume was throughout the story with the female being louder. But towards the beginning she sounded tinny.

That all being said, I continued the book because I've listened to all of them and they build on each other. Plus I enjoyed the story. I did not care for the heroin though. She was annoying and just not believable or likeable. I cannot believe she was an army ranger, much less a captain, yet have such issues with death, killing, and also no idea how to handle sexual assault. Military women go through special training to cope with the particular kinds of abuse and torture that women can go through. And although training is very different from actually being assaulted, she just didn't handle it in a believable way. I've been assaulted and I've gone to individual and group therapy and not only would I not handle it that way, but no one else in any of the group meetings dealt with it like her. It's just not believable. Getting upset and angry because your extremely violent rapist is shot before they can rape you is just absurd. The continuation of her denial of having been thrown in the past, is also either unbelievable, or she's really dense. And then she kept saying how she could kill them, then she just knocks them out, but let's herself get beat up first. I heard a lot of how she was so self sufficient and bad ass, yet she couldn't do anything on her own. And she traveled into the past and was instantly this badass former army ranger captain, yet she was previously a caterer/party planner described as being a 'lady,' which was after she was in the army and right before she went back in time. So there's a discrepancy in the heroines character. I really just didn't see her making any contribution to this series. She had all this history, but it just wasn't believably demonstrated. It was like there was character building on paper, but how the character reacts and acts, in terms of showing rather than telling, just fell dramatically short. She was never self reliant, always foolish, and overall just annoying and overly dramatic. But we were told she was everything but those things.

I've really enjoyed this series. But the heroines ALL being great equestrians, martial arts or self defence experts, while being rich and doctors or lawyers is just getting old. One lead character being great at everything is plausible. But not all of them.

This might be my last book in this series. I think it's about to take a turn I don't care for. I liked this one but it was too crude for me. I like how the series started out. Some sex but not too much detail. Sure some people like porn, I don't. I wish the author didn't go there. I have an imagination. Anyone needing that much detail is a voyeur. Worse, the 'faith' in this bugs the crap out of me. First, no priest would give advice on IVF. It's forbidden. That's not rocket science and very easily to learn about. Surely most know the church forbids anything artificial when it comes to making babies. If you can't make them naturally, adopt. Period. There are no other options allowed. No priest (worth anything at all) would give advice on doing anything else. And again I'm really annoyed by the 'faith' of the O'Grady characters. They are passed off as 'faithful' but prayer is about all they know how to do. They don't know or live the faith. If the author wanted to make them have any faith why not make them Protestant? But a truly faithful and knowledgeable Catholic would know that sex outside sacramental marriage isn't ok....ever. And they'd not flaunt it they'd hide it. Sure many Catholics do but we don't pretend they are faithful while doing it. They're the ones that say "I grew up Catholic." But that's about it.
Lastly, the mention of the Illuminati got me. I do not want to read about such non-sense. Could she come up with something original? It's about to get very stupid, I think. And worse, I fear she'll try to tie it into the Church. If so, I'm out. But since she's not currently released any more books I may give up before the next one is out. I still love the story but I see this going somewhere I'll find super stupid.
What do I love....the history! Well done on the research of the history. That is what keeps me coming back. And funny that I finished this book while in New Orleans.
OH which reminds me.....NOLA has no basements/cellars. They'd all flood. A tad more research there would have made that obviously clear. The city is below sea level. Surely Katrina taught the rest of the world about the city. No cellars, then or not. I did giggle when I passed a somewhat underground parking garage yesterday though. But nope, I don't think you'll find a single cellar in the area. Heck I don't think you'll find one on the Gulf Coast at all.

Battle of New Orleans

This is a difficult review to write because of the subject matter. Please take the author’s warning seriously. Before I get into my notes, let me say that I think that Katherine has done a magnificent job and I’ve given it 5-Stars. I’ve devoured the entire series; from the beginning it’s become one of my favorites buthis book is very different from the others. They all occurred during times of tragedy and/or war, but the emotional issues kicked everything up several notches.

It’s set during the time of the Battle of New Orleans. The attacks and rape scenes are brutal, and the actual battles are horrific. The previous stories have men who are genuine warriors but also very romantic. The intensity of the situations in this story basically stripped the characters of their emotional filters, resulting in language crude enough to be called vulgar. I normally would be offended by it, but in light of what they’re dealing with, it fits the setting. I was, however, unhappy with the characters “at home” continuing with a lot of that language. I hope it falls off to what’s normal for them in the future books. Still, it wasn’t enough to make me drop a star.

I now love Jean Lafitte and, if you read this I know you will too. The characters are genuine and the mystery of the brooches continues, although there are a few new revelations (hint). As always, Ms. Lowry-Logan’s research is extensive and accurate. I would encourage the reader to start at the beginning of the series if possible. The characters grow in number and you get to know them better with each volume. If you like time-travel and romance with a historical background, I believe you’ll enjoy this series.

Another amazing story

As I have said in all my reviews, this is absolutely a story to read...but start at the beginning with the Ruby Brooch.

Now, about this book. One this that truly sets Lowry Logan apart from so many other authors is that there is not a set formula for her books. You don't know what you are going to get each time you open the cover, but you can be pretty darn sure it will be better than great.

The Topaz Brooch is a darker, more gritty story in many ways. I glanced through the other reviews and noticed many people upset at the amount and description level of the sex in this book. I disagree. I feel like for these characters we wouldn't believe a sweet, kiss you and then dissappear into the bedroom type of scene. We lived with Penny through her traumas, the ugliness and rawness of it all. We need to live with her through the rawness of putting her life back together. Many times life isn't pretty and putting it back together after trauma can be even more graphic. I don't think this story would ha e been believable otherwise.

But that is just my opinion. Read it and form your own. Just remember if you are new to the series START WITH THE RUBY BROOCH!

I have read all the books in this series and had mixed feelings abut this one. I loved the storyline in all of Logan's books, she does a super job of researching for them. I did read the "warning" at the intro it didn't bother me but it was a boring distraction and I hope it doesn't continue in the future books of this series. Two chapters (in a row), 20 pages in my usual size 5 font was a bit much to take. I read it because I was afraid that one of them might say something that may be a clue to the meaning of the stones, no such luck. I'm a old lady, not a prude but there is moment when a sex scene just becomes tiresome and rather vulgar.
I sincerely hope that future characters with whom we have yet to meet do not have sexual hangups due to past sexual abuse. In my mind this story direction is not something that Ms. Logan does well. Now, with that said I can't wait for the next book to come out, I also can't wait for the revelations of what is behind the cave door under the Castle!

Another Amazing Brooch Adventure

Recently I took a break from reading the two main genre I had been drawn to for the past year or so. While organizing my ebook collection, I saw the first brooch book and found myself rereading the next 7 I owned after that. I thought I should maybe take a break and read something in between, but no, now I am obsessed!

So now, even though the books seem to be getting longer, I am mesmerized by the saga, and The Topaz Brooch, the story of Billie/Wilhelmina/Penny, has been a spectacular addition to the storyline.

Usually in these huge books, there is a part or side story that can be skipped over or skimmed, but not in this one! It held my attention on every page and even followed into my dreams at night.

And thank heavens, this "episode" provides a very dramatic/climatic reveal of the history and purpose of the brooches. Thank you Katherine, for this incredible journey and your incredible sense of place regarding Bastaría and New Orleans in 1814. I am in awe of your research skills!

Not the usual Brooch story in the loved series...but a great page Turner kept me mesmerized!

This edition in the Celtic Brooch series is a page turner... kept me glued for days! Disclaimers were there lots of violence, sex and course language. I am a survivor and have PTSD. I also know my limits and my triggers but I trust Katherine as an Author not to use gratuitous non plot driven devices in her story. The story was character and plot driven and appropriate for the situations the character were in based on their personalities. THAT said it was great to get to know Sophia better, who is an interesting heroine in a supporting role in this story. Devotees of the series may think of her as a female Jack Mallory...or at least I did. I loved getting to know a bit about Jean Lafitte and his brother, the battle of 1814. And some of my favorite parts were learning more brooch lore. It has mystery, intrigue, lots of emotional ups and downs...but I vote it is a winner!
