Roboticist extraordinaire Casmir Dabrowski has a new nemesis: astroshaman leader Kyla Moonrazor.
She’s stolen the ancient wormhole gate the king ordered Casmir to retrieve, and she’s entrenched in an underwater base on a forsaken moon. Moonrazor is more educated and more experienced than Casmir, and she has legions of killer robots and cyborg defenders on her side. Casmir has his friends and... a submarine named the Waddler.
As if his task wasn’t daunting enough, his old competitor, mercenary Captain Tenebris Rache, is on the same quest, and he’ll do anything to keep the Kingdom from getting that gate.
If Casmir can’t find a way to defeat them, the king will never let him return to his home, his family, and the career he loves.
Another highly enjoyable romp with Casmir, Kim, Asger, Bonita and Qin. All the rest of the gang put in appearances, in an action-packed adventure liberally laced with sarcasm and snark. Great fun! I enjoyed it immensely, and am already starting on the next one ;)
The series is still very funny. There is bloody action but most of the prominent characters survive barely. The Captain is among the best that I've encountered and all the female characters are awesome throughout. The male characters are on a long but comfortable leash, making for a great comedy.
The Captain is swashbuckling, fighting for her crew, worries about her credit balances, still finds time for men that catch her fancy, all while griping about the physical complaints connected to her age. She's possibly my favorite captain ever. I really like Buroker for a good stress relieving comedy.
And now for my experience of Goodreads. See my review of "Dark Horse", a good novel by Diener or Powers of the Earth (a love story of s libertarian on the moon, hiding his torrid affair with his gun, will his forbidden love be discovered). After reading the comments of Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi), if you are a not appalled, please do not read my reviews, beginning now.
Claes Rees, Jr, Andrew, JP and the others were possibly the least imaginative cretins on the site. I have read worse, from an american suggesting anal rape prompted a woman to object to what I also considered paedophilia in the John Ringo Zombie series through an outraged american patriot (eagle as his Profile pic) defending Hitler's reputation in comment to a review of a scholarly work.
Claes implied or stated that he represented all american racists and Fox having claimed for more than ten years, that all american racists adore the "Poot" or Putin as others think of him, to Claes Rees, Jr and company, I say.
Don't be a numpty. Be a smarty. Come and join the Communist Party.
GLORY TO UKRAINE !!!
On the upside it reawakened my long dormant inner communist. My younger self emerged and it was embarrassing trying to explain to him that I had not sought a local BLM organization for starters or done any volunteer work in a long time.
On the downside, the site experience was far different to the occasional question or comment that I thought I might receive on my reviews. Goodreads (certainly the American-tainted English language section) is as I have discovered, not a community of readers so much as a Reddit for books (based on what I've heard online about that site). The negative comments to female reviewers on Goodreads would make your skin crawl.
I reread some of the best free books and finally eliminated most of the rubbish writers from my searches. YouTube is a better source for the bibliophilic thrill. With its variety of history, science and cultural studies essays and documentaries it is a major source of entertainment. Some favorite channels are.

Buroker does it again. Lots of action, good world building and character development continues in this volume. And again some laugh out loud snark that I’d like to remember to use! Thank you Lindsey.
5 out of 5 The best book in the series to this point, this was much bigger in scale and events and in the actuall book size. Casmir and gang are trying to storm underwater base that thay suspect holds the gate pieces, there are some problems of course:Casmir gets the great Plague and is dying, Rache kidnappes Casmir, Kim and to help him recover the gate and all the while Casmir is thinking of the ways he can ti share the gate technology with the galaxy. Qin and Binita are freed by Johney twelve toes who turns out to be a Knight undercover and dad. Casmir manages to even leave an imperession on Kyla Moonrazor who he fought for the control of the base. in the end Casmir turns the gate radiation off,Kyla Moonrazor with some help from Casmir stirevents in a way that everybody gets a piece of gate and escape(she kisses casmir before that). and Kim barelt saves Casmir 's life. But they find out that their system is under attack from the same prince who has a bounty out for Casmir and they cant go home, they have to travel to a snother system to pick up the prince.

This series is enjoyable and worth reading for anyone who likes a bit of mystery sprinkled with bits of humor and interesting characters, especially when set upon the stage of sci-fi, written by an author who excels at writing well-developed characters with world-building weaved into the story so well so that you don't realize you have been immersed. (No annoying info dumps by this author.)
Book 1, Shockwave, ended with a cliffhanger and it was a bit of a struggle figuring out what was going on, who was who, and where it was all going. But, I have enjoyed Buroker's writing since discovering her Fallen Empire series, so I plunged into book 2, Ship of Ruin. I enjoyed it completely feeling happy that I hadn't let some niggling problems in book 1 discourage me from reading onward. I snatched up Book 3, Hero Code, and I was caught up, eagerly awaiting book 4, Crossfire, this summer, a birthday present to myself in July. Book 5, Gate Quest, was released this past week, and I added to my paperwhite today, spending my day enjoying the Arizona sunshine and 84 degrees while Casmir visits an ice moon.
Who can resist an adventure with pirates; princesses; a geeky genius hero and his best friend, who is autistic; a motherly mercenary; a teen-aged assassin (genetically created) who dreams of a knight in shining armor; a knight whose armor isn't so shiny; a personable and mysterious pirate; an AI ship who is a neat/clean freak; some T-1000 type robots; and a host of other characters ranging from evil, scary, supercilious to quirky and loveable? There are many mysteries, and the series has ongoing big questions such as whether loyalty to Casmir's home planet and political system is right or wrong, who built the gates and who should control them, is the pirate Rache totally a bad guy, and why is someone always trying to kill Casmir. While these are overall themes that tie the books into a series, book 2 onward have complete stories each containing a plot arch with very definite endings. You can feel satisfied with the story upon reading the last page while looking forward with positive anticipation to the release of the next book.
Another exciting book by Lindsay Buroker. Casmir is at it again and you can't help but love him. I am excited that the next business book in the series is coming out on the 21st of this month. I am a true Lindsay Buroker fan.
Like many others I have loved this series including "book 5" and can't wait for the next book in the series (scheduled for release 11/21/2019). I'll have to go find another book or two to read while I wait - boo hoo :-) Anyone wanting to read a fast paced entertaining set of stories start with book one of this series, you win't be disappointed. The characters are fun and the stories / plots always keep you engaged and you'll find yourself laughing / chuckling out loud. Enjoy!
I love this series. I say this every time Lindsay Buroker begins a new series. I began reading book 1 thinking that I wouldn't enjoy this one as much as Dragon Blood or the Empire series, which I hope we will be seeing more of. However, I really have been enjoying the Star Kingdom series more than I thought I would! I am now engaged with the characters as much as I was in the other series. In fact, I really love the robots!!! I appreciate Lindsay's books for the excellent editing and truly great dialog. I also love that the protagonist and most of the other central characters have physical flaws, a few are older but still vital and energetic, and some that are emotionally and/or socially challenged. I am just in awe of the author's versatility in genre and character development, as well as "world building."
Great space opera with kings, princesses, space pirates, mercenaries and ancient alien technology.
Also T-1000 style combat robots that are surprising lovable.
After a lot of fighting with astro-shamans the gate is reached and Casimir has the chance to disable its security systems. While he's suffering from seizures and the Great Plague.
Besides all of the fighting we find out that Kim and Rache are developing a romance. The princess Oka has returned 16 of Casimir's messages. One of these days he may ask her on a date if he isn't in prison for treason. And Qin and Bonita both have potential romances with knights.
Casmir finds himself in the centre of trouble again! Everyone’s here in this adventure but some are in different locations. There are a couple of family and other reunions. The Kingdom fleet is chasing after the Gate parts. The Astroshamans have them but their base is under a kilometre of ice making it difficult to access. Everyone realises that Casmir is probably the only person who can render the pseudo radiation in the Gate inert. It doesn’t make for a comfortable life! This is especially so when other systems find out about the Gate and decide that they want a piece of it. Lots of action with Casmir being his usual quirky self.
Book 5 in the Star Kingdom series is another winner.
Lindsay Buroker has written another exciting and compelling story. My only disappointment is having to wait for the next chapter in the series. She creates characters that grab onto you, making you cheer them on as they conquer the obstacles thrown in their path. None of them are perfect, but the characters come alive in your mind so vividly that you forgive their faults and applaud their strengths. I can hardly wait for the story to continue.
Gulp. I just read through Lindsay Buroker’s Gate Quest (Star Kingdom Book 5) in one massive spear reading session. I couldn’t help it. The book was just soooo good. Now I’m going back and reading it more slowly, to sort of savor the pages. I guess that’s all I really need to say about this book, come to think of it: any book making you want to do that has got to be superb. For the record though, It is indeed superbly written, with a great plot, a perfect cast and perfect world-building. Highly recommended, though the series is best read from book 1 for maximum enjoyment.
Another enjoyable novel from one of my favorite authors. The character dialogue is witty.and the story is interesting with just enough action to create a sense of adventure. I highly recommend this series. Especially if you need a break from the novels that can get a little too dark and serious. And if you enjoy underdogs who somehow come out on top without compromising their morals and becoming the evil they fight. I look forward to the next book in this clever and entertaining series.
If you're an action, adventure, sci-fi and fantasy life long junkie like I am, the Star Kingdom ticks all the boxes. This latest installment is another witty, interesting, exceptionally well written story of intrigue, romance, and adventure. Love the characters and the way Lindsay Buroker develops all of them. The only downside is having to wait until November to read the next one.
Lindsay Buroker's, no matter the genre, are action packed. Well drawn characters and environments, snarky comments framing the clashing swords and knives, along with the staccato zips of repeating gunfire. There is so much action in Gate Quest, I'm exhausted! I'm exhausted in a very satisfied and contented way and looking forward eagerly go Planet Killer in November!
Snark abounds, love is in the air, and death and destruction are around every turn. This latest instalment in Buroker's Star Kingdom series is another rollicking adventure as the crew descends upon the astroshamans' ice moon. But deeper and darker threads are in motion. The future is more uncertain than ever and we are left wondering if meddling and Snark will be enough...
I love these books for their wit and banter. I’m sad about all the dying and slaughter, especially when you have glimpsed bits of humanity from them previously, but it does keep the action moving along. I love that it is often hard to easily label someone as a hero or a villain. That and the interactions are what makes such a far-flung sci-fi so approachable.
Five days to read a Lindsay Buroker book. I think that’s a record because I usually read her books in two days.
Lindsey said this was the longest book in the series. And I thoroughly appreciated it.
There was some interesting interplay between Rache and the Kingdom, those groups and the Astroshamans, and all of this happened with rental submarines.
I really enjoyed this trip with Casmir and his friends and enemies to retrieve the new Gate from a frozen moon. Casmir is an important person in securing the new Gate. Everyone is trying to get a piece of it. Casmir barely survives and I cannot wait for his date with the Princess. Cannot wait for the next book!
Another extraordinary adventure in the Star Kingdom series! I love the characters, the plot, the dialogue, and the snarky humor! This story is about the advancing search for the stolen space gate and includes the introduction of a wonderful new character who claims to be a Kingdom Knight who is undercover as a pirate. Love it!
A lot happens in this book, but the characters still find time for snarky remarks, deepening friendships, and a hint of romance. Much more action is on the way and we have over a month to await the next book in the series. The author has hopelessly spoiled her readers with her high rate of productivity and we're seldom kept waiting this long!
I was quite impresssed by Casmir in this volume, he showed a real toughness he hadnt yet shown. He's no Rache, and I wouldnt want him to be but given a different life and different circumstances who knows......well I suppose do actually.
I also liked the vilian for this book, and I hope its not the last we see of her.
I really love be these quirky, far from perfect characters. The author has some skill in the area but I believe she has outdone herself in this series. Love the contrast of the knights, the mercenaries, the mods and the geeks. Whom do I love more?!? So hard to choose!
I am really loving this Star Kingdom series. Lindsay has done a fabulous job creating characters that resonate with me, and a storyline that is "edge of your seat" entertaining. I am looking forward to book 6 (Planet Killer), and other books in the Star Kingdom universe.
Casmir has done it again. Assigned by the king to finish tracking and recovering the Ancient and Deadly Gate. He naturally drags his friend and roommate, Kim into the mess. And along the way, he gets involved in stopping a civil war on a space habitat. A good read.
I am hoping that the series continues for at least several more books. I'm glad to see that there is a book 6 in the near future. It is entertaining to follow the stories of many of the characters. They are characters that you care about and who have interesting adventures.
