I've been living with this burden for years, but my secret has finally been revealed and I feel like I can breathe again. I've wanted to ask —to beg— for help, but the spell that’s held me captive wouldn’t allow it. With it out in the open, I’m more determined than ever to break the seal from my chest so I can truly be free.
But what if my seal has something to do with one of the most feared prophecies of the millennium?
"A broken seal breaks the fragile hold…”
What does that mean? How am I connected? And why do I find myself so deeply drawn to Julius when I know my viramore, my soulmate, is out there somewhere? It’s not fair to either of us for me to lead Jules on, but it seems that my vampire companion is fierce in his determination to help me.
The Witch’s Blood is the third book in The Ellwood Chronicles and is a continuation of the overall story as we follow Emrys, Julius, Sebastian, and Ailin on their journey. It contains explicit material and is intended for mature adults 18 years of age and older.

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.
She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

This was a very enjoyable tale about another Ellwood family member Emrys and his quest to lift the seal and find love. Told from multiple POV it's full of magical creatures, loyal friends, intense emotions and humorous moments. This is not a standalone.
I enjoyed the hate relationship between Ailin, the Sage and head of Ellwood family, and Julius, vampire and Emrys's lover. They were at times hilarious with their barbs thrown at each other. I liked Julius himself, especially after I found out what he endured before meeting Emrys. Considering everything he turned out honorable and kind vampire, and he was so sweet and protective where Emrys was concerned. The mystery of Emrys seal was revealed, and what he suffered made me want to hug the stuffing out if him. Poor baby. I enjoyed them as a couple. There were some heartfelt and gut-wrenching moments that made me want to cry.
The book had a steady pace introducing new characters and giving a chance to reconnect with old ones. There were intense bloody battles, sweet sexy moments and a bit of teenage drama. I loved reading about the Bonded all the witches had and the connection they all shared. Ailin was fierce but mellowed slightly toward Julius in the end. The plot twists made the book a very entertaining read. I liked it.
“All is lost, little witch. Doom is upon us. War and blood will be ours”.
Tercera parte de esta saga. No miento cuando digo que llevaba esperando desde la precuela para leer la historia de estos dos señores. No me ha decepcionado, pero me esperaba algo más en general.
Tampoco me voy a quejar.
2,5 stars - not that I didn't like the plot with the actual beginning of the war, but I couldn't get invested in Emrys and Julius' relationship. Truth is, I don't really care for them. And maybe it's because I read "Thayer" beforehand, but the characters' mistreatment to Tobias felt so gratuitous and misguided it made my heart clench.
Anyway, I have some issues with the author's portrayal of relationships (especially the possessiveness and extreme co-dependence aspects), and sometimes the dialogues and inner thoughts are too much, but I still sincerely enjoy this series and look forward to its conclusion.
First things first, you absolutely need to read, or better yet, listen to the first two books in the series before starting with The Witch's Blood. Not only is there a continuing storyline, but most of the characters show up in all the books and you will be very lost otherwise.
I am not fond of multiple POVs in books (as in more than 2), I've mentioned this before in my reviews—and, frankly, unless it's in books like The Metahuman Files by Hailey Turner, I have little patience for it—I will admit that I have a new book to add to my exceptions, because I absolutely loved having Emerys and Julius's perspective, additionally to Seb and Ailin's. It worked great and in a complex story like this one, it was absolutely needed to get all the nuances in what was happening with the main plot.
I adored Julius and I think after listening to The Witch's Blood, he has become my favorite character in the series. I still love Ailin to bits, but Julius and how selfless and loving and caring and willing to do whatever he needed for Emerys, even when he felt he had no chance with him, just won me over, and then when I listened to all he went through? I fell head over heels in love for him, at the same time that my heart was breaking. It took me a bit longer to warm up to Emerys, mostly because he could be so headstrong and it annoyed me that he was resolved to keeping Julius at arm's length. Once he started thawing his attitude toward Julius and not only accepting his gestures of love, but reciprocating and even starting them on his own, my opinion of him changed drastically. The chemistry between Emerys and Julius was exceptional and I adored them together.
I loved Ailin and Seb, too. Their relationship has progressed so much in the course of the series and it was great to see them so well attuned to each other now that Seb has come into his own powers.
It was great catching up with Alex and the kids, although I still want to strangle Basil every single time he's in a scene. Grrrr! I have a theory about him and I can't wait to see what Michele has in store for him in the next and last installment. Oooh, and I adore Toby, he sounded like such a sweet gentle giant of a vamp.
Kenneth Obi did a fabulous job with all the voices, but his Julius just about made me melt in a puddle of Mari-goo, LOL. And I loved the special effects he's adding in certain parts of the books, they really add up to the overall experience.
Overall, this was my favorite book in the series so far. It was engaging, fast-paced, action-packed, chockful with romance, fantasy and a fantastic, well thought out, captivating plot that just keeps getting better with each new book. I already have the last one in my Kindle, and while you can be sure I'll pick up the last book when it comes out in audio, I don't think I have the fortitude to wait until then to read the thrilling conclusion to this amazing series.
This series is in a serious decline. This book was so boring. Virtually nothing happened, except a lot of repetitive and unimaginative fucking from start to finish. And I swear this instalment consists of only about 300 words in all, that are arranged in a various combination of the same paragraph. With so few words, no wonder there is no story. But what angers me the most is, Notaro put two new characters into the foreground and shoved their love story into our faces, but without letting the readers see how or why that love even started. Instead the book starts with them fucking, continuous with them being all over each other through the middle while simultaneously trying to persuade us and themselves that the other doesn't care, and then ending predictably fucking happily because they do love each other and because they are vitamin-virus. At what point during the whole thing, were they not in love, a couple or bonded already, for them to try to make it such a dramatical change?
I have listened to the first book before listening to the second, to refresh the memories, but I will not repeat that for the third just to check if there was really something of Emrys's and Julius's beginning in there. I'm just so utterly disappointed at what could be a really good love story. But I'm sure at some point the author will make a story about Basil and Thare's love. As a continuation or a spin-off. But I wonder if their story will get butcherer also.
Also, why do everybody in this book feel such an unlimited urge to have everybody else so close to them? Why does Ailin NEEEEEEEED Emrys by him, like he's going to die if he leaves for 5 min just to go to the toilet. Everybody is so possessive of everybody it's suffocating.
The Witch’s Blood by Michelle Notaro Rating: 4.5 stars I loved this book. I was hesitant to read it at first because I wanted to get to the conclusion, and I knew at least part of this book took place during the events of the last book. I am so glad I didn’t skip it. Everything that happens in this book is the set up for the conclusion and is really needed to fully understand the stakes involved in the last book. I loved both Emrys and Julius and was glad to read their story. I also loved that we also got to read chapters from Sebastian’s and Ailin’s perspective also. All in all, a wonderful book. Highly recommended if you are a fan of this series.
I love this series so much and was dying for this book. I knew that it would have answers that we've been looking for since book one and I was excited to get them. I also figured that about twenty more questions would pop up. Because Michele Notaro is an evil, evil author and nothing can be that easy.
I'll admit I was not a fan of Emrys at the beginning. He was an asshole. He has his reasons. We read about what those were in The Witch's Seal, but I still didn't think he had a leg to stand on. I was prepared to have to learn to fall in love with him in this book. It turns out it wasn't that hard. I still want to shake the ever-living life out of him, but I no longer want to punch him in the face to progress. I'm so glad we got to see a different side if Emrys than what we saw in the other books. He's so sweet and this book really endeared me to him.
I fell in love with Julius in The Enchanter's Soul. I liked him when we met him in The Witch's Seal and thought that something interesting was going on between him and Emrys, but he really shined for me in book two. He was so patient, so loving, there for Emrys even when they both thought that one day they'd have to let each other go. He didn't put up with any of the shit Emrys threw at him.
I really loved how their relationship developed. How we got to see them grow from being just fuck buddies who had some feels, to them admitting their feelings individually, and then finally letting it all out. It was a different, refreshing pace from A and Seb's slow burn. Even though they were both idiots who needed to be shaken for holding in their feelings.
There are a few Sebastian and Ailin chapters thrown in this one, which I was really glad we got to see. There are so many depths and layers to this story that I was really grateful to see their side of things. And to see that they were okay and healing after what happened to them in book two.
My poor heart hurt after reading this book and I know it's going to hurt more before the end of the series. There are so many emotions in this series, good and bad.
This book is structured a bit differently than the others. In the other books, I could feel the tension, I could feel the anticipation. In this one, it was more subtle. There's a scene that brings it all together and while it made my heart pound it also excited me. I knew something had to give and there was a little push that said "yes something is coming" made the slow build-up to it worth it. Because unlike the other books there wasn't really the big obvious "things are happening behind the scenes, it's only a matter of when" so having it explicitly pointed out was perfect.
I cried so hard in this book. Like I had to set my kindle down and just sob. It doesn't happen often, usually, I just have some tears and move on. Not with this one. You feel this book. I am still feeling this book.
I'm both excited and scared of what could happen in the next book. Tissues and maybe alcohol will be a must when I read.
My least favorite in the series, so far. The story was interesting, but Emry and Julius didn’t feel fully developed or “real” to me. They were barely described, which made it hard to picture them. Emry’s silver eyes were mentioned several times, that was all. Minor characters had more detail than the main ones.
It wasn't believable that I was reading about two tough guys—they were dripping with sugar. It was as if the author was a woman writing for women. Oh, wait...💡 They were SO in love, hugging, kissing, and crying all. the. time. Their 'voices' were basically the same, so much so that I couldn’t even tell who was talking half the time. Truly, a masterpiece of character development. Not.
I'll read the next book only to see what happens next in the overall story arc.

amazing. so excited to get answers to questions from the first 2 books... and of course now i have a million more questions haha... it is fast paced with lots of magic and normally i am not a big sci fi reader.. but this series has kept me interested and wanting more. plus it is well written and set up awesome. i loved it
Juliard and Emr-ass are total assholes who treat Toby like shit and threaten him and constantly let others threaten him when he did nothing wrong. They went to him for help and yet they made a bunch of demands and threats and were simply horrible, how does that make sense. Those two almost ruined book 2, with this book, they kinda ruined the entire series for me.
SOME thoughts during reading but NOT ALL:
This is how he reacts at first but later his entire demeanor changes and his tune changes but he should’ve known what his dumbass behavior was going make Emrys think.
What the hell is wrong with the author, she throws mixed signals all the time.
Right. So you didn’t immediately use the Voice on Toby the moment you sat down on his couch? You did, asshole.
Again, his tune changes so drastically that later it seems like he’s so happy to see Toby and care for him deeply, etc etc. And Toby wasn’t angry, he was scared. You were angry.
Then he cut off the convo, you shouldve gave this traumatized man a chance to say no to you dickwad
Omg these dumbasses just don’t shut up...
It’s clear as day they’re viramores if they’re feeling the way they are, Notaro made these characters dumb af & cringe. So much cringe in this book.
How exactly does Tobias owe him? Julius made it clear they all did terrible shit to each other maybe toby more than others but still. AND you say multiple times in this book that Toby had no choice so how does he owe you sir????? and without toby’s help, Julius would’ve never been able to leave that shithole. So he owes u for setting him free? Because that’s what comes to mind, otherwise the author negates her own words.
Please explain the oweing thing. And partner? Dumbfuckery shining through again.
If Tobias were to talk shit, attempt to attack you or do something u dont like, you’re obviously going to hurt Toby and you’re going to let Emprys do wtv he wants as well so stfu with your stupid words that dont say the truth of the matter.
Oh great. You’re happy your fledgeling is terrified of you. You’re such a goooddd person Jules😒.
Is Julius moody? First you say you’re scared then say you’re angry u have to contact him, then say you never wished to see Toby again, then say you are afraid he might attack you and the other dumbass, now you have the gall to say you missed him? Make it make sense author!
This is one of the few moments where I find Julius being very caring but of course this heartwarming moment is demolished by Embrys
Wtf. So fucking awkward to just start making out with someone on someone's porch lol. Notaro takes it too far with the possesive aspect relating to supernaturals, it’s just so overdone and annoying and makes me pissed at the person who’s jealous each time after a while of seeing the same shit behavior in all her books.
RIGHTT. Toby will feel safe… then he doesn’t in his own house. His magic wont touch Toby? but then it does. Stop lying to him.
Uh huh. Because you totally stick to those rules and not the ones governed by your pettiness or jealousy or insecurity. Sureee.
HA!! See this lying prick does the one thing he said he doesn’t do ever. I’m glad to see Toby stick up to Julius. But unfortunately, this is basically the only time he does it, he lets everyone walk all over him or threaten him etc.
How did you mean no harm? You’re trying to control someone and make them agree to something they havent even heard yet. Gimme a damn break. Toby is so nice. Too nice and forgiving.
Yuck the type of behavior that Emrys exhibits is not attractive to a reader at least not me but I know many others as well. It’s pathetic and it’s repeated over and over and over.
So now that Toby is saying YOUR witch, its wrong? I thought you wanted to be seen as his Emrys. And Julius shoulda clarified more because I’d probably think him a bloodslave as well lol.
Ouhh big strong man, keep pressing into him harder. Man, he said he didn’t know, how the fuck was he supposed to know Emrys is your friend, partner, lover. EYE ROLL. And you say you’ll never bind him to you like that but proceed to do exactly that later on so never say never. And no, Toby shouldnt just know you would never do that to another person because he hasnt seen you in decades so just like you thought he mightve changed then he couldve also thought you changed. Oh and also let’s not forget how you used the Voice on him to exert control on Toby not two minutes earlier.
Why are you continuing to stare him down and intimidate him if he already agreed, you know he’s scared but you don’t back off. This is simple bully/intimidation tactics that made me dislike Ailin so much at times but here it’s worse because Toby’s his fledgeling.
You already made that threat. Stfu. You’re in his domain for fuck’s sake, he didn’t have to agree to help your dumbass.
You forgave him… but so many times in your musings it seemed like u might not have?
Julius clearly says he also did terrible unspeakable things.
Sureeeeeeee. Words and declarations mean nothing in these books, they always go against it.
NOT BY CHOICE. If I heard that, I would’ve asked more questions and then you know, been a decent being and not start shit in Toby’s house, against him, outside his house. Julius shouldnt have led with “dont blame or hurt him” then jumped into “he tortured me”, you shouldve known what that freak would do next.
You’re just making it worse. Why dont you list the terrible shit you did. And yeah there’s no reason because he clearly said Toby wasn’t in control, Samuel was, Nothing was his choice, omg it’s like this man is a toddler. Actually all the viramores do often. And even when he’s behaving like this none of them a inkling that they’re each other’s viramore??
Of course julius the fuckhead is turned on by this shit. Why does this author atribute anger and violent-type behaviors to attarctiveness, as if those actions are sexy along with wrong but since they’re sexy, let’s not focus too much on the wrongness. Make total sense.
Omg Toby’s your fledgeling, he also suffered, he was stuck with Samuel longer than you, he lived in so much fear each day and someone has been threatening to kill them over and over and it’s a result of you actions and words only, you let it slide over and over because you’re too damn focused on your fucked up desires and needs and emotions, not Toby’s, right? Fuck this guy.
It’s his fucking house, motherfucker. I hate characters like this so much. You’re in his domain, he agreed to help you in your fucking burden that you caused yourself.
Fuck youuuu emrys. I wish this fucker actually existed so I could deck him. Toby doesnt give a shit about Julius’s body, he never so much as indicated he was sexually interested in Julius. And I’m sure Julius know what Emrys is doing right then and there but is letting it happen and letting him glare at Toby and make him uncomfortable IN HIS OWN HOME.
And just when you thought this disgusting bully couldn’t get any worse. I bet Julius is turned on again. God, how could any author make these characters up and put them on paper thinking yes they will be the main characters.
And I lost count of how many times this dick threatened to kill and maim and torture Toby in his own house, and it’s all in the span of mere hours. Did I mention the author is unoriginal af many times and overdoes things to the point of making my eyes suffer from reading this shit fest of writing.
Again, thanks for pointing it out, Julius, this author’s characters, especially main characters tend to mesh together and become too much like other main characters in other books, so it’s almost like you’re reading books by this authors where the characters dont differ much in attitude and demeanour even if they initially did or they did so in the other books that came before. It’s like I’m reading fantasy novels but with the same characters each time regardless of who they are as supernaturals.
Julius once again finds this shit funny. It’s either amusing to him or sexy, this violent crap. Julius is full of shit. Emrys is full of shit. Toby deserved better than Julius.
So, you can see he meant it but you still continue to treat him like shit and as hostile, once again forgetting he’s the one helping YOU. Know your place Emrys.
This is actually embarassing and disgusting at the same time. Emrys is clearly getting off and getting satisfaction to see Toby be in fear.
Yeah, keep smirking asshole, when you yourself can’t intimidate him, you’re happy when he gets scared of Ailin. How much more desperate and pathetic can you get?
Lol I’m glad Julius touched Toby to comfort him, it serves Emrys right and the way he just blows off Toby’s concerns is fucking annoying and shittastic. Go narrow your eyes somewhere else you thirsty loser. I still remember how in Sebastian and Ailin’s first book, I’m pretty sure it’s first, Emrys grabbed Ailin’s ass to make Sebastian jealous. I knew then and there this character would need more build up in the decent person department and so far the author has failed to do so because in this book he kept getting worse and worse.
I hate emrys so much. I hate people like him, I hate reading about people like him, it’s not cute, it’s not hot, it’s plain taking pleasure out of seeing someone’s fear over and and over.
And you act like this yet you’re too stupid to figure out he’s your viramore. And stfu, Tobias is his fledgling, you can never sever the connection, thirsty boy. Julius doesnt need your supervising anyway, doesnt the auhtor know she’s making Julius seem like a princess who’s powerless against Toby when it’s clearly the opposite.
Again, Emrys is a piece of shit. I dont think Toby even wants to sleep next to Julius so your “not if I can help it” is fucking pointless. And good on you to treat Julius as if his judgement is clouded because that’s the vibe I’m getting. And motherfucker, Julius said he also did terrible things, no one cares if u trust Toby or not, you’re not worthy of his anyway but stop pretending like your Julius is an angel.
The author kept figuring out ways to make Emrys more and more insufferable and disgusting in my eyes by the page. He’s fucking awful. I hope I’m not the only one who saw this and that others arent simply excusing this behavior. He’s shamelessly using Sage, someone who’s Toby deathly afraid of already without meeting Ailin and unsurprisingly Ailin is all for it. This is so pathetic, do your ownn dirty work and let Julius see what a prick you are though that fucker would only get a boner from it.
Moments like this made Julius marginally better as a person, but he didn’t try hard enough to stop Emrys. He didn’t try to tell Ailin to not scare his fledgeling unnecessarily. He just keeps watching and talking and saying shit that Emrys doesnt really follow. What the fuck fuck is the point opening your trap Julius.
Let me take a moment here to get this straight because this is hilarious. So, this whole time you’ve been fucking Julius, feeling possesive over him, only to say you need his help find your viramore?? And I havent seen much of this “helping” lol. Make It make sense author. Emrys is a horrible selfish dickhead but the reasons for that are not limited to what he’s referring to. I’m trying to imagine a scenario where this dumbass finds his viramore alongside Julius who he’s fucking on the reg. What the fuck would you say to your viramore?? Hey Im your soulmate and this is Julius who probably wants to kill you now that you’re in front of him, I fuck him each night but hope you’re okay with that and get over it” like is this asshole serious? Why would you want someone you’re fucking and clearly obsessed with beside you when/if you were to actually have a viramore out there.
Ailin is doing what he usually does but he’s amping it up for Emrys’s sake. How the fuck is Ailin a known protector, and didn’t Emrys tell you that Toby is risking his life by helping his asshole sire and the worthless piece of work Emrys?
All of this is said in mirth, and in front of Toby. They’re “bratty assholes” and “idiots” who’re scaring an innocent but you still won’t put a stop to them, will you? so Shut. The. Fuck. Up.
He was lonely you ass, he’s been alone for so long.
I’m surprised Ailin still manages to annoy me with his threats even after I read the first books. I know how his is but everytime he threatens someone completely innocent like this, in such a violent way, it raises my hackles. He’s simply being a bully. Warning someone can be done differently yet effectively without you coming off as the villain. Threatening someone in this manner just makes dislike a character who does this. And again, he’s being extra to please his ex-boyfriend, who’s a fucking child.
Yes, Julius, be amused some more, keep watching, you’re doing such a great job at protecting your fledgeling and stopping others from scaring him over and over. Eye roll*
They continue the threats as if they revel in watching someone else sweat and be scared. That’s not okay. Sebastian couldve left it at that after Ailin already whipped out his dick and scared the shit out of Toby but he says “not yet” then proceeds like that… why are you doing that. I think the author kept overdoing this type of shit. This is probably not the first time I’ve disliked Sebastian but this moment made it vehemently so. Just what the fuck. Toby has given no indication he wants to hurt your viramore, so stfu and stop measuring your dick. Why are you putting hands on Toby. This moment is pretty awful, I also thought Sebastian would be kinder or at least remain neutral while he let Ailin threaten someone, so why now and why does it have to be poor Toby even after Julius told both of them that Toby’s his fledgeling. And when he “roughly pushed Tobias away” made me hate Sebastian. What a crock of shit. Again, Julius just watches this shit unfold. Such a good person and sire not standing up for Toby.
I thought it was fucking weird that the author makes Sebastian a threatening bully one minute and the next he’s chatting up to Toby as if he didnt make Toby uncomfortable or deathly scared. I swear these people have so many mood swings, it give you whiplash. I just dont think the author is good at consistency and original writing.
Let me leave this here. Sweets. Dollface. Notaro must’ve been high while writing this cringe fest.
You’re such a fucking little bitch. He cant even warn Toby now without you bristling over literally nothing? He cares about Toby, show some respect for once in your goddamn life.
How is Toby an asshole vampire? He hasn’t once indicated or showed he is. You’re just fucking biased and basing your shit off that asshole Julius and your own jealousy. If Toby is an asshole, then you’re the devil because Toby has been nothing but kind and this asshole just keeps behaving like a petulant child. And this freak knows he cant break the connection they have right? Why does the author do this. You’re just making your characters look like dumb teenagers when they’re grown ass men. And I’m sorry but at this point, I was so fucking sick of Emrys’s behavior and jealousy, I almost dnf’ed. Jealousy like this only seems to make him look an asshole and so damn insecure, why doesnt the author realize this. Once or twice is okay but this many times, this much repetition, I mean did you even try to make this plot sensible?? And Julius, just loves this. He’s enjoying it so much that it makes me sick.
So your Bonded was just as awful and dumb as you and quick to behaving like this when you both know Toby had no control, no choice when he was captured by Samuel. Again, Julius sure made himself look like a saint during that convo the other day, he couldve done better by his fledgling. And Emrys and Zrak completely ignored the fact that Julius even said he did terrible shit too. FUCK. YOU.
Omfg. At that moment I knew I didnt give a shit about what happened to Emrys or Julius cuz they’re terrible but also because I just cared about Toby. His likability was something else and I hate how the author made it that he would be scared further after everything he went through by Julius himself, Emrys, Zrak, and Ailin and Sebastian.
Yes Toby!! I love that he was expressing himself and what he said was 100% true.
Yes, you did. You did fail him. For decades. And are you really sorry? Because with the way Julius was acting before and saying and thinking the shit he did before seeing him again, you’d think Toby was shitty when he wasn’t. None of it was his fault. None. He was forced. He didn’t have a choice. He helped Julius escape. And still Julius acted like that, I don’t like him for that, not one bit.
Toby’s saying that for Julius’s benefit but I’m guessing he simply didnt reach out because he thought he couldnt rely on his sire and that sucks because if he did reach out, I’m certain Julius would have so fucking annoying with his apprehension.
He’s feeling this way about the man who’s supposed to be helping him find his viramore. Make it make sense Emrys. And it’s a fucking HUG. Like I said, the author overdoes and repeats and recycles this type of shit. Like author, do you see this as good writing or are you simply writing it because you get off on it? If he had shot Tobias in the chest, and Tobias wouldve been rightfully angry and scare, I’m sure Julius would only whisper sweet nothings in Emrys’s ear while he lets his fledgling down once again.
Yeah… I think it’s a red flag when Julius has to immediately comfort Emrys each time after comforting his own scared and lonely af fledgling but again, Julius made it clear he gets off on it and so did the author, pretty much by doing this over and over and over and over.
This is so dumb. I thought this was a powerful smart witch? So why’s he so fucking stupid that he can’t put one and two together. Give me a break.
Of course Toby is terrified and heartbroken and not angry like Julius. He was auctioned off to Samuel so young… I just don’t care about Julius at this point.
Yeah keep narrowing your eyes and “deal” with the vampire later *eye roll* for showing how envy he was because he didnt want to be alone again. Stop mistaking his stares as jealousy over you having Julius to yourself. For suck’s sake, he admitted he hasn’t had anyone show him concern in so long.
My empathy for Toby grew and I’m not ashamed to admit I respected the dog more than any other character besides Toby in this book at that moment. Even though, let’s be clear, I had 0 respect for Emrys after all his bullshit. And I certainly didn’t give a shit about him or Julius.
Let me just start off by saying that Kenneth Obi and his wonderful wife, Breha, gave me a free audiobook copy of The Witch’s Blood by Michele Notaro. They were more than happy to give a few available copies away to interested people in return for honest opinions of not only the novel but also the narration. I’d like to point out because I was given the audiobook version of this story, I am unaware of any problems with the text of the book such as punctuation errors, misspellings, etc. With that said, the following review is my honest opinion of my listening experience.
Before I jump into my thoughts about the author’s side of things, I’d like to talk about the narrator, Kenneth Obi. I’ve loved Ken’s work from the first time that I listened to one of his books. I’m not just praising this man’s work because he gave me a free copy of the book. I’m actually really picky when it comes to narrators. He’s just great at what he does and I’ve not been disappointed yet. He’s amazing at distinguishing between the characters with different accents and voices so that you have an idea of who is talk or thinking about something. Ken is also great at bringing scenes to life with the passion he puts into his voice acting. If a scene or character is emotional, you’re going to feel it! It’s not uncommon for Kenneth to bring you to tears, make you laugh, or feel the snark of the characters. He brings that energy to this narration, making you really feel for the characters and experience the scenes. One comment I do have is that there were a few times when the audio didn’t match up perfectly. I should have made notes of it, but I forgot. It’s almost as if he did another take on something he wasn’t quite happy with and the two pieces didn’t match up exactly. It’s not really a big deal for me, but I guess some people might momentarily be bothered by it. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about Ken’s narration of The Witch’s Blood. He did a wonderful job throughout the whole series!
Now...onto the story!
The Witch’s Blood is an enjoyable addition to the Ellwood Chronicles. It’s the third installment that picks up where The Enchanter’s Soul leaves off, only this time focusing on Emrys’ seal and his part in the prophecy. The overall development of the plot thus far has been done fairly well, giving the novels an intriguing appeal that draws the reader/listener in. Michele Notaro, in my opinion, has done a good job of creating this alternate reality where magic, myth, and folklore come together within the human world. I’ve found the author’s take on many of the creatures, beasts, and beings very interesting throughout all three books. She’s given everything in this series her own unique spin and I can definitely appreciate that.
One thing I do have to point out is that sometimes certain characters come across as petulant. They aren’t so childish that I’m completely put off of them, but they do test my patience. For example, let’s take a look at Sebastian. Throughout this entire series, he’s been bothered, scared, annoyed, or disgusted by multiple little creatures despite Ailin assuring him they’re safe. I will admit that Sebastian wasn’t as bad in this book as he was in the first two. I’m sure some people find Seb’s antics cute, but I just found them annoying after a while. Another example is Basil’s behavior. Oh good Goddess above, there were moments when I wanted to shake some sense into the boy. He was quickly becoming just another name on my shitlist until the scene with the gremlins where he sort of redeemed himself. Then, at the end of the book after earning back some of my love, he has to act out again with not only Thayer but impressionable young Jorah as well. It left me shaking my damn head and agreeing with Ailin about locking them up in separate rooms.
It was great seeing the relationship development between Emrys and Julius in this book. I already knew there was something there between them, but it was good to find out just what their relationship was and what they meant to one another. The author did a great job of creating a pull to, not only Emrys and Jules but also Zrak due to all of their troubled pasts. Julius suffered for years as a bloodslave to his sire. He lost people and saw those he cared about tortured at the hands of a truly evil being. Emrys and Zrak, on the other hand, endured torment from the Berserkers to protect their coven. They both experienced so much pain, loss, and loneliness thanks to the Berserkers. In my opinion, they deserve to find some joy in life and the author was good enough to let them all have a little happiness.
We get to know quite a few previously known characters a little better as well as meet some new ones. Tobias, one of the troubled fledglings of Julius is the most prominent new character to me. We hear mentions of Julius’ other two fledglings, Cassara and Nessa, which we will probably see in the series soon. We get a better feeling of Zrak’s personality which I was super happy about. Zrak, as Emrys’ bonded Hellhound interested me from the start but felt a bit flat until this book. We discover that Zammerra is a stonecold killer when it comes to protecting Seb. Ailin also lets us see how much he loves his kids even when they are driving him mental. I will say that I was a bit disappointed that the other younger coven members weren’t mentioned very much. I felt like they could have played a bigger part as well but were brushed aside in favor of more prominent characters. Yes, I supposed this book was mostly focused on Em and Jules, but they still could have been mentioned considering how much Em loves those kids.
Overall this was a good book. There was m/m romance, drama, affection, sadness, action, smexy times, love and everything in between! The next novel is sure to be a great continuation of the series, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for that in the future. I’ll sum up this review by saying if you’re into magical and/or mythical beings, give this series a go. You might just find it as intriguing as I did once you start reading/listening.
Much better. A solid 3.5. This story centered around a different couple. Julian (a vampire) and Emrys (a witch). I really liked this couple. They did call each other cutsie nicknames a tad too much for my liking (sweetie and dollface…really?). But the plot was intriguing and fast paced. It ends on more of a HFN for Julian and Emrys and a cliffhanger for the actual underlying plot, but as there are many more books to the series this doesn’t bother me much.
Seriously though, why tf did I not immediately pick this up after finishing the sequel? So glad I randomly thought of this series earlier this week and had the opportunity to continue the story.
Michele Notaro has done it again! I don’t know how but each book in this series gets better and better. Everyone is recovering, or at least trying to, from the horrific events that happened in The Enchanter’s Soul and figure out a way to break Emrys’ seal. Lucky for us, we get to hear from the viewpoints of Ailin, Sebastian, Emrys and Julius in this book. I forgot how much I enjoy the scenes with Sebastian and snakes, lots of laughs.
I really love the kids in this series as they add a magic all their own to it. I loved how everyone, and Ailin knows many people, banded together to try and help Emrys and they were very clever about it. I got a little frustrated with A and his attitude toward Jules; however, I do like A’s fury when someone he loves is threatened, and his capacity to love is boundless. So glad that Sebastian has a cooler head and was around to temper A’s anger. I have a feeling they’ll all find their way together. By the way, my heart swooned during the touching scene at the inn.
While it broke my heart to hear about what Emrys and Julius went through and to feel their pain, I did appreciate learning more about their histories. Ailin and Emrys’ convo was a long time in the making but well worth the wait. I simply adore Jules and Emrys. They stole my heart and I love how protective and possessive they are of each other. When Emrys gets angry, wow, things sure do get hot, hot, hot! May I just what bada$$es Jules and Emrys are when fighting.
Oh my gosh, Basil and his “incidents” he finds himself in are both hilarious and head shaking, but I will admit I do feel for Bas as he has lots of heart and I think feels things very deeply. This book was full of so many twists and turns, some expected and more not (no spoilers), but combined they create a amazing story that I couldn’t put down. I can’t wait to see what happens next and want the next book now.
Em and Jules ruled the show for me and make my heart so happy. A sexy vampire and witch combined with spectacular world-building, need I say more?
The Witch's Blood is the third and penultimate book in The Ellwood Chronicles series written by Michele Notaro. It centers on Julius, a witch, and Emrys, a vampire, and how they relate to Ailin Ellwood, the sage, and Sebastian Fitz, the prophesied enchanter.
It follows the journey of Emrys, a witch and Julius, his vampiric protector and love interest. When Sebastian Fitz has been revealed to be the prophesied Enchanter, Emrys must come to terms what this means and his part in the prophesy.
The Witch's Blood is written rather well. Told mostly from the point of view of Emrys, the narrative is paced rather well as it explores the back story of Emrys and Julius. The story progression is well thought out, the shift from the first two books being centric on the relationship of Sebastian Fitz and Ailin Ellwood to this installment of being Emrys-Julius makes perfect sense as it ties into the overarching plot. The world building continues to be stunning as the narrative gets more into the minds of now four protagonists.
All in all, The Witch's Blood is written rather well and is a good continuation to what would hopefully be a wonderful series, which I plan to continue in the very near future.
Julius has such a torturous past and Emrys knows a thing or two about experiencing such pain as well. Their love for one another is strong and I love that even though both of them didn't know who they were to one another they still fell so deeply in love with one another, never letting go, never faltering, looking out for one another. This book shows you that the pull and knowledge about who your soulmate is, is only one part of the equation.
At times it is not an easy story to read about both of their past experiences. You want to shield them, protect their past selves from all those evil beings hurting them, but all you can do is read on.
But the past doesn't always stay there and both of them have to fight not only for their lifes but also for those of their family. The battle is bloody, it is fast, it is heart wrenching and it brings the family closer together and forms new and stronger bonds between lonely vampires and a protective sage.
Okay so even though I still really liked this it is without a doubt my least favorite book of the series. A big reason for that was how suddenly the Emrys/Julius story was front and center without much build up. It just felt low key jarring and i'll be lying if I didn't admit I found it really hard to care .
The biggest issue though was for some reason the relationship just didn't feel real to me . Plus what was with those pet names dollface? sweets? talk about cringey . Maybe it would have been less jarring to me if their perspectives were added casually instead of being the majority of book 3 all of a sudden but that's just me
With that said this world is so interesting and these characters already own a special place in my heart and I just love the story Michele Notaro is telling. I can't wait to start book four to see how this story arc warps up.
This one was the best in the series so far, but the story still feels like it’s lacking.
The plot feels jumbled. It’s clear the story is plot driven but the plot isn’t character driven. The character’s aren’t really solving anything and they seem more reactive than proactive. However, unlike other books in the series the back story and world building is tighter and relevant.
The character development is also better. I felt that Julius and Emrys’ story came together much better than Sebastian and Aillin. Toby was also a wonderful addition.
The story still loses points for me in writing and diversity. Women aren’t really represented in this story. Also, I’m confused by the lack of non-white characters. The only BIPOC I noticed was Emrys. Also, idk if Emrys is even Black. He’s described as dark skin but only in the first book.
I’m probs gonna finish the series to reach my goal but I don’t think I’d reread it.
As we come to book 3 in this series, things change up a little. This book mainly centers on Jules and Emrys and instead of a witch and an enchanter, we see the developing relationship between a witch and a vampire. We are beginning to see some of the back story with Emrys and what actually happened to him in the past that shattered his relationship with Ailin.
I really liked Julius and Toby (Julius' fledgling) was also introduced. We get to see Julius' compassion and capacity for love - which is interesting since he is a vampire and Emrys is a witch.
There is lots of action and the storyline continues to progress. It is all leading up to the last book and conclusion. It looks like it'll be a doozy.
