A obținut diploma de Master în Sociologie (1976), acordată de Universitatea din București și titlul de Doctor în Filosofie (1983), acordat de Universitatea din Cluj. Între 1976 și 1986 a lucrat ca sociolog în cadrul Institutului de Proiectare a Construcțiilor Tipizate din București.
A emigrat din România în martie 1987 și s-a stabilit în Statele Unite ale Americii. A obținut titlul de Doctor în Istorie (1995), acordat de École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales din Paris.
Din decembrie 1990 până în septembrie 2000 a deținut diverse funcții manageriale și de cercetare la The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington D.C. A fost vice-președinte al Comisiei Internaționale pentru Studiul Holocaustului în România, prezidate de Elie Wiesel, în perioada octombrie 2003-noiembrie 2004. Din septembrie 2000 este director al International Archival Programs Division din cadrul U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington D.C. (Muzeului Memorial al Holocaustului din Washington).

Uluitoare,înspăimântătoare și revelatoare ,ar trebui neapărat citită de pasionați sau chiar studiată în liceu. Lungă,grea și seacă cu puține momente de respiro ,dar foarte bine scrisă și documentată.
Cartea face lumină asupra unei perioade negre din istoria României și totodată prezintă personalitățile vremii care au contribuit la odioasele crime și torturii care s-au petrecut pe teritoriul României și nu numai.
Probabil singura carte în care nu te bucuri că vezi poze.

September 14, 2020Am constatat că într‑un sat din Bucovina, un ticălos de neamţ a luat vaca unui ţăran şi i‑a dat un bon scris în nemţeşte. Românul a luat bonul şi foarte liniştit l‑a pus la chimir sau în cartea de rugăciuni, sigur că va fi despăgubit pentru vaca luată. Ce credeţi că scria pe bon? Scria aşa: „Posesorul acestui bilet are dreptul să fie trist, pentru că i s‑a luat vaca”.

Vad ca au sarit mai multi oameni cu rating de-o stea. Eu sper ca nu s-au impacat cu stitul destul de uscat al cartii, nu ca sunt fani ai personajului principal.
Sarind peste paranteza, chiar cautam o carte cu acest continut, care sa puna totul in ordine cronologic. Ma-am mai ciondanit cu niste oameni pe internet si n-am avut multe raspunsuri, dar acum am ordine mentala.
Cartea explica in ordine, dar si tematic, cum a avut loc Holocaustul la romani. De la antisemitism si originile lui la pogromuri, masacre, deportari si masuri discriminatorii, dar si la explicatiile faptului ca foarte multi evrei au supravietuit totusi. Cartea mai include aspecte despre masurile aplicate rromilor si unor culte, recomand cartea autorului dedicata strict rromilor, foarte buna.
Cartea include atat marturii puternice, dar si multe explicatii, cifre, tabele, care pot speria unii cititori. Dar ramane foarte citibila si explica zic eu foarte clar ce s-a intamplat. E parte din istoria noastra, nu cea mai luminoasa, dar trebuie stiut.

Pe cât sunt de bun cu cei buni, pe atât sunt de rău cu cei răi. Dacă sunt șantajați de ticăloși români, să-mi înlesnească să-i prind și să fie siguri că nu-i voi menaja”, asta spunea Antonescu, pe vremea domniei sale.
Holocaustul a fost un eveniment dureros, un fenomen care nu trebuie repetat în viitor, o mișcare de ucidere în masă a evreilor, slavilor, țiganilor și a altor persoane de diferite rase. Holocaustul reprezintă o tragedie.
Antisemitismul nu trebuie promovat, a provocat prea multe legi rasiale, ură și dorința de a ucide.
Foarte mulți evrei și-au pierdut viața în România sub regimul lui Antonescu din 1940. Încă din 1866 au început persecuțiile prin adoptarea decretelor din care rezultă apartidismul evreilor, fiind sistematic discriminați din punct de vedere economic și politic.
Pogromul de la Iași, masacrele de la Odessa, deportarea evreilor, lagărele din Transnistria acestea sunt doar câteva dintre evenimentele care au produs moartea numeroaselor persoane.
Unii au încercat să salveze, alții au supraviețuit. În România mulți evrei au murit din cauza foametei, deshidratării, tifosului exantematic, febrei tifoide. Unii au fost împușcați, arși de vii, batjocoriți. Au fost obligați să poarte steaua galbenă, simbol al recunoașterii, și-au privit rudele pierind. Au suferit așa cum nu a suferit nimeni.
Holocaustul din România a reprezentat un masacru, al doilea, ținând cont că naziștii s-au aflat pe primul loc în această situație.

Nicio tara, cu exceptia Germaniei, n-a participat atat de masiv la masacrarea evreilor.
O carte de o importanta istorica incontestabila ce vizeaza una dintre realitatile mai putin cunoscute sau popularizate ale Romaniei. Prin documente, tabele, statistici, dar mai ales marturii ale supravietuitorilor si marturisiri ale celor implicati in Holocaustul din Romania, Radu Ioanid prezinta cu lux de amanunte fiecare aspect al acelei perioade rusinoase. De la guvernul antisemit ajuns la putere si legislatia antisemita, pana la deportarile si executiile masive de evrei in fiecare oras din tara - nu exista nimic care sa nu treaca neobservat sau neanalizat. Pana si laudata si mult-apreciata patura intelectuala din secolele XIX si XX sta sub semnul antisemitismului, intrucat putini sunt acei oameni ai culturii care nu si-au exprimat in spatiul public convingerile antisemite. De altfel, asta nu inseamna neaparat ca ele n-au si existat. Asadar, cercetarea lui Radu Ioanid te zguduie, te intristeza si te face sa te intrebi de ce asemenea tragedii nu sunt nici macar mentionate in manualele de istorie ale secolului XXI. Daca nemtii sunt resemnati cu istoria lor, noi, din pacate, ramanem in continuare lasi si refuzam sa ne asumam trecutul.

Tough, tough read. When the Germans criticize your manner of genocide, you know it's bad. This book is in essence a long, unrelenting list of gross abuse and arbitrary treatment of Jews in Romania. Though Gypsies are in the title, they barely show up in the book. One short chapter is dedicated to their plight and a couple of scattered mentions.

The Holocaust in Romania is, without question, the most thorough, rigorously researched, and devastatingly clear account I have been able to find of what happened in Romania under the Antonescu regime. I have read widely on the Holocaust in Eastern Europe, but no other work comes close to documenting—methodically, unflinchingly, and with irrefutable evidence—the machinery of persecution, deportation, and annihilation carried out against Jews and Roma in Romania.
For me, this book is not abstract history. It is personal. It is the first scholarly work that allowed me to fully understand what happened to my own family. The remaining Finkelthalls never even had a chance—including my great-grandmother, Jetti. This is a hard read but there is a lot of information if the subject matter interests you. My great aunt,her husband and children were murdered in Noua Sulita Romania during the Holocaust. I read this book as research for context surrounding their deaths. If you are looking for information on the Romanian portion of the Holocaust or just the Holocaust in general it's a must read.

What a brillianly written and researched book this is!!!! It shows again and again to what extent Romania under Antonescu was the most loyal ally of Hitler, implementing the Final Solution not just of the Jews living in Romania, but also the killing of Roma and other religious minorities. Most Romanian Jews were exterminated, yes, this it the correct word, by the hordes of Romanian soldiers who wanted to purify Romania of "the kikes"- as the Jews were called by the leaders of one of the most corrupt and anti-Semitic countries in Europe.These unforunate 375000 Jews who perished and were brutally murdered in the horror camps of Transnistria were an easy target for the murderous hordes of Ion Antonescu and his henchmen.
It is no use describing the infinite crimes perpetrated by the Romanians and their respective allies, the Ukrainian soldiers and the Nazi beasts. You will need a very strong stomach to read the terrible crimes and things that these unfortunate people went through.And you will need the same in order to read how during a period of some 40 years before, the various parties, groups and intellectuals prepared the ground for the things to follow, including the most despicable butchering and pogroms of Jews between January to june 1941.
True, this was not an industrailized Holocaust, like the one which happened in Poland, although plans were ready to send Jews there as well. Antonescu was not a total fool and after the defeat of the Nazis in Stalingrad and other dismal defeats during that years, he realized that the war was lost, thus towards the end of 1943 and the beginning of 1944 the deportations to Transnistria stopped.
Antonescu and his henchmen were executed in 1946.
However Romania, until very recent times, refused to acknowledge her resposibility in the Holocaust . Eventually, the leaders of this most corrupt country- even these days -had to face the truth, and take responsibility for the destruction of more than 375000 Jews, out of 785000 Jews who were alive before 1941- the years when those horrors happened.
This book is excellent and merits to be read by everyone who is intelligent and thinks that another Holocaust cannot happen anymore.Indeed, this is a timely book. Suffice it to watch these days what is happening between Russia nd and Ukraine in order to see that some similar things occurred and still can happen exactly like they did some 80 years ago.
