On the Inside is John Killick’s story about his time inside some of Australia’s most infamous prisons; Silverwater, Bathurst, Goulburn Supermax.
John served time with Ivan Milat, Graeme Thorne, Steven Bradley and Ronald Ryan, but the book also includes many unknown stories. As well as a fascinating look at some famous Australian criminals on the inside, this is also John’s own incredible story of battling addiction, self-discovery, and how the prison system shaped his life.
Given that true crime is a favourite genre it should not surprise that a book written by someone who had committed crimes and been incarcerated would be interesting. I read cover to cover, however, the book would also be enjoyable by individual chapter.
What an incredibly fascinating story and also extremely sad. It is not surprising to see how a lot of these men ended up where they did when you learn about their sad upbringings, or lack of. Very interesting insight to the stories of the people behind bars.
Very interesting reading about all the various people who have spent time in prison. I had to wonder why they keep coming back and why some are always trying to escape. Many of the people had spent long periods (several being forty years or more) of their life behind bars and yet they keep offending or trying to escape. They just can't seem to help themselves. Some of the stories told were horrific particularly about the paedophiles. How can human beings have so little feeling for they suffering they cause others? Even the author spent around 40 years behind bars. No sooner he was out, he would rob another bank or commit a similar crime, and back in he came. Considering that the author was self taught whilst inside he did a good job. However, I was surprised that a professor went over the final copy and did not pick up the occasional grammatical, spelling and typing errors. It certainly didn't detract from it being a very informative and excellent account. Well worth reading.
