James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

I never dreamed I would actually own Garfield Fat Cat Volume 8, and I knew if I did ever get the chance to own it, I believed it would only be used. To be standing here today holding a brand new copy of Volume 8… I cried. I’m so happy and thankful.

In case you’re wondering why Volume 8 would mean so much, I will tell you: for years, Volume 8 was not published. No one actually knows the reason why, but Garfield stans guessed a multitude of reasons. Now, my best guess is… the publisher just didn’t realize Volume 8 wasn’t still publishing? Perhaps it was an error. I really don’t know. But because Volume 8 wasn’t being published, it became rare. Incredibly rare. Volume 8 was selling for more than $100 used when volumes typically sell less than $10 used. Brand new volumes cost $20.

Every month or so, I’d check to see if there was a good used copy I could find or for any news on Penguin Random House saying why they weren’t publishing Volume 8. Much to my surprise, one day, there was Volume 8. Available for order at PRH. I ordered and fully expected my order would be canceled or just never show up. But it came. It came in perfect condition for me to have and enjoy forever.

The takeaway here is that while I don’t think someone needs to own every book they’ve ever read or every movie they’ve ever watched, I do whole-heartedly believe that for those books you want to be able to read and re-read and for those movies you want to watch and re-watch, physical media you own is the answer. Libraries curate their collections (and rightfully so). If you want to guarantee access, you must own it.

Collections I’m working on growing:
Garfield
Baby-Sitters Club
Sweet Valley High

Get your favorites. Find them, treasure them, and enjoy them.

Oh, and my review of Volume 8? I loved it.

Like all Garfield and all daily strips it's hit and miss and miss and miss and miss. But I still enjoy them. This was probably the strongest collection I've read so far, a handful of the strips were genuinely funny.

Excellent!: My son recently became interested in Garfield, and he just loves the books. Its fun and very easy reading, so he enjoys it, while still practicing his reading skills. Its the best of both worlds! The service was great, the shipping was very quick, and the quality of the book was excellent. Thank you for putting many smiles on our faces!
