Pathways to Romance #3

The Charming Rogue

Rate this book
She’s the woman of his dreams. If only she didn’t despise him…

Everything has always come easily to Caleb James. Everything, that is, but Mary Walker. Her stunning beauty and independent nature enticed him from the start—and yet every romantic overture he made went so horribly awry that she can now barely tolerate him. But that’s all about to change. He has the perfect plan to redeem himself. When she arrives at his family estate, he’ll finally be able to win her heart. Too bad he’s not the only one there with the very same idea…

The last thing Mary wants is time alone with the insufferable Caleb. But since he’s one of her twin’s best friends, declining his invitation is out of the question. She’ll just have to do her best to ignore the charismatic, overly confident rogue. Only…he’s not acting like a rogue this time. Surely the little glimpses she catches of his softer, kinder side are an act…right?

Can Caleb and Mary overcome years’ worth of misunderstandings and missteps—not to mention a persistent rival for Mary’s affections—to find their very own happily ever after? Or, when all is said and done, will The Charming Rogue be left alone once again?

This Regency Era romance is stand alone novel and is book #3 in The Pathways to Romance series. It is rated G and features an enemies to lovers storyline.

Cinnamon Worth is a native of San Diego. She grew up with a large family. Her parents had seven sons and three daughters. Cinnamon was their youngest. Her brothers and sisters would get into a lot of trouble, but would have the best stories to tell years later. Cinnamon was not as cool. She pretty much focused on school and kept her nose clean.

When she went off to college, she ran into the same dilemma most college students do. Her nicely defined path was running out. She would need to make some choices. Chief among them – what was she supposed to do for a living?

She had the good fortune to meet an amazing man the summer before her junior year of college. Sadly, she had already signed up to spend a year studying abroad. But the couple weathered the challenges of a long distance relationship and have now been married for over twenty years. Of course, all this did not solve that pesky problem of making a living – at least not right away.

That romance did, however, shape so many choices in her life. She decided to obtain an MBA after college because that boy had two years left in college and wanted her to stay put in San Diego during that time. Then, after the two years ended, they married, and he dragged her away from her hometown so he could begin work on his PhD and his MD. The college he attended happened to be located near Sacramento, so with her MBA in hand and zero experience, she went door to door begging for work, which she eventually found.

Her career ended up being in public finance – remember the Sacramento’s main industry is government. Year after year passed. Two beautiful children were born. Her husband studied and studied. After a little more than thirteen years, he had completed his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and his medical degree. But he still needed to do his residency.

Once again they set off on a new journey and had the good fortune to spend a few years living and working just outside of San Francisco. But there is no place like home and once her husband completed his training, his career brought them right back to the city where they met. Cinnamon turned in her 10-key for an apron and became a homemaker. This has led to a boom in sales for local restaurant owners. Surprisingly, one finds free-time when they avoid housekeeping, refuse to cook, and have no job, so she started writing for fun and demonstrated for her children the advantages of finding someone to marry who will let you goof off all day.

She loves humor, and even when she tries to be serious, it seeps into her writing. She has been thrilled to discover a small cluster of readers who are clearly brilliant, have excellent taste, and obviously possess a wickedly, awesome sense of humor. Yes – I mean those that are reading her books! Thus far, she has published books that use Jane Austen’s wonderful characters from Pride and Prejudice. The fifth such book will be released in early 2019.

Out of the three Pathways to Romance books, this one is by far my favorite. It was more Pride and Prejudice-esque, and the characters were likable this time around. Because this is novella-length, it was hard to understand exactly WHY Mary hated Caleb so much, especially as he was never anything but nice. I was glad to see her change and redeem herself by the end of it. The “villain” of the story never helped or hurt the plot, not really sure why he was in there.

As with the previous book in this series, The Charming Rogue starts off right where The Duke and The Damsel ended. In it, we find the story between Mr. Caleb James and Ms. Mary Walker. Of course, as a reader who has been following these books closely, I found it intriguing that after all this time, even though Mr. James has always been talking (and been teased by his friends) for his affections for Ms. Walker, that said character actually didn't correspond his feelings and rather had a firm dislike of him. Thus, I really enjoyed how the author threw these two together, and how that created the most interesting outcomes.

I liked Mary's change of heart, and how she (finally) learned, I think, not to judge someone so quickly, or not jump to conclusions. The romance was really sweet, and I really liked the ending. I also liked how through each book in this series, the reader can certainly see the growth of the author's writing. And while this book isn't one of her P&P adaptions, I felt it had certain nuances from it :)

Of course, a great part of my enjoyment while reading/listening to this book came from its narrator since she did a great job with all the voices from the different characters (I certainly liked Ms. Walker's and Mr. James'), and how she managed to convey most of the nuances and emotions the characters were feeling. ~ 4.5 stars

The rogue is quite charming and Mary is very blind due to misunderstandings and flubbed attempts at impressing her. She actually reminded me of my 7th grade self who couldn't stand a particular boy and then ended up going to Junior prom with him. I can't decide if that is an indication of Mary's change of heart being realistic or just Mary being immature in general.

It is a quick read and clean. Nice for an evening's read.

I find it difficult to listen to two regency audio books back to back as I did today because when I get used to the first narrator it is hard to make the switch to the second one. So initially I didn't enjoy the narrator but by the end of the book I was quite used to her and comfortable with her reading. While she isn't my favorite narrator, it didn't detract from the story.

Language: I think once
Violence: no

I enjoyed this story with all the characters within. The main characters were Mary Walker and Caleb James.

Mary Walker is a stunning beauty and has a independence nature. While walking around a park with a friend they see someone that they know. They stop and are invited to have some of the picnic that is laid out. While talking to these friends a guy that she knows show up. She not happy about it.

Caleb James is walking around with a friend. They decided to visit the park and see if they can find anyone that they know. When they do see someone they decided to visit them. He is happy because there is a lady that he like is there. He been trying for years for her to notice him.

This was a fun story to read or listen to. It had action and drama throughout. It had a few giggles within.

I received a complimentary audio copy via StoryOrigin. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

Caleb James bumbled his secret courtship of Mary Walker in so many ways, from knocking her into the water, giving her flowers she is allergic to, and shooting pigeons when she has an affection for them. She thinks he is arrogant and can't stand him. But after her brother Anthony convinces her to go with him to visit Caleb and his sister at his uncle's estate, she sees a different side of him that he hides from his friends. But there are still misunderstandings and some continued bumbling that causes turbulence in their relationship.

The narrator had a nice British accent with voice changes and inflections throughout the story, but her tone was rather sleepy.

Caleb has helped behind the scenes, as his closest friends have navigated the choppy waters of romance. Meanwhile, he has pined for Mary, the younger sister of one of his friends from university.
Though Caleb is able to guide his friends to overcome their obstacles to love, every time he tries to get Mary’s attention, he makes a fool of himself, without even realizing his faux pas.
When Mary agrees to spend time at Caleb’s estate to appease her brother, can Caleb prove to her that she was mistaken her assessment of his character and motives?

Fun story. Her misperceptions, his unrequited love... While this book can be read as a standalone, much of the background to the story and depth to secondary characters is found in the other books in the series. This was one of the better stories in the series, in my opinion.

This was a sweet regency romance. It’s nice to find a clean regency era on Audible. Cute story with plenty of great dialogue. A lot of misunderstandings to be solved.

A regency romance

The story was an interesting one, although I did find when they were doing their thought parts it was a tad annoying, it detracted from the story a bit and at some stages left me a little confused.

The narrator made the story interesting to listen to.

I would recommend this to all those who enjoy a clean regency romance

Book 3 in the series, it’s the story of Caleb and Mary. Caleb has loved Mary for years, but all his efforts have been disastrous and have drawn results opposite of what he’d hoped. Basically, Mary can’t stand him.

The book is a miss-mash of miscommunications, false assumptions, and prejudices. Mary was hard for me to like. She’s a selfish brat, and rude to Caleb and her brother. It wasn’t until late in the story that the relationships changed. There were some things left not completely tied up, although there was some veiled closure.

I liked the book because I’ve been waiting to read Caleb’s story. He’d been in love with Mary since before the first book. If you’ve read the series so far, you’ll want to read this too. Cinnamon is always an author that I enjoy.

I listened to this on Audible also and was quite disappointed with the narrator. Her voice sounded sing-song to me and, in my opinion, hurt the story. I cannot recommend the audio version.

(3.5 stars) - A charming tale

Caleb is struggling to win over the woman of his dreams, but everything he tries gets misinterpreted by Mary. She already knows that he's a cad so she sees everything he does thru her prejudiced perspective.

It's a little bit frustrating and a little bit amusing.

Fortunately, Mary's character arc doesn't stop there. The best part of the story is when she has an epiphany and develops as a person. And the ending is just pure sweet fun.

*Clean romance level: sweet kisses

“The Charming Rogue: Pathways to romance book 3” by Cinnamon Worth
What a fun, easy, clean, sweet Regency romance. I was gifted a download code by the author via StoryOrigin and downloaded the story from Audible.com. I just enjoyed listening to this fun romp. The road to true love surely is plagued with many a wrong-turn, and mis-understanding to be sure. I do love reading stories such as this one. This is a stand alone read within a series. I also like it when one it is not required that one read each story in the series in the order they were written/released. Surely do hope you enjoy this story also. Happy Reading

Caleb has always had feelings for Mary, but anytime he tried to express himself, things went horribly wrong. Maybe his new plan to win her over will work... or maybe it won’t.

I have to admit, Caleb and Mary were not my favorite characters, but they did elicit and emotional response. Cinnamon Worth did her job.

The narration by Megan Green was well done. She definitely brought out the personalities of each of the characters.

The Charming Rogue by Cinnamon Worth is a clean regency romance.

Caleb is too charming and too perfect, and Mary doesn't like him one bit. Caleb, on the other hand, adores Mary and tries endlessly to get her attention. He manages to get her to stay at his family's estate for a while, but just as he thinks he will gain some headway, another man swoops in.

This book was cute. I feel for Caleb in the first half. Everything he does to try to get Mary to like him fails miserably. He has to get her brother to blackmail her in order to get her to visit his family for a while. Poor guy. I understood Mary's point of view as well. She thought he flirted with everyone and was always showing off his talents, and so she didn't take his interest seriously but was offended at him.

There was some definite character development in this story, which I enjoyed. And the complications to their romance - besides their initial misunderstandings - made the story quite interesting. Also, once the romance did take off, they fell in love a little too quickly. But on the whole, it was a sweet, clean romance.

I enjoyed this audiobook's narrator. She did a good job giving life to the characters, and her voice was perfect for the time period the book was set in.

I received a complementary copy of this audiobook from the author. I received no compensation, and was not otherwise obligated to write a review. Everything I wrote was the truth.

Wonderful story line and characters

I was worried that Mary and Caleb would marry others because of Mary not being impressed with Caleb's ways of trying to impress her and then Ethan De Voss steps in and you need to read it. This story had wonderful characters with a solid storyline. The read is smooth and the book is over before you can register the end. I can't wait for the next, it should be Abby and Anthony's story.
