Buried in Secret by Viveca Sten is Scandinavian noir at its best. This is the tenth instalment in The Sandhamn Murders series but reads fairly well as a stand-alone. The story begins with the discovery of human bones buried on an uninhabited island in the Sandhamn Archipelago. Two detectives are tasked with the murder investigation. Two unrelated women went missing around the same time ten years ago and the detectives need to identify whose bones were found, considering that the bones were too old to provide DNA information. The novel moves between two time periods: ten years ago and in the present. It also switches from one missing woman’s story to the other, keeping the reader interested and guessing. What really works here are the short paragraphs with a cliffhanger at the end of each one. Viveca Sten has written a smart, fresh mystery that never lags. I look forward to reading more books by this author. Highly recommended. Thank you to Amazon Crossing, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is book 10 of the Sandhamn murder series set in Sweden, how did I not notice this when I requested the book? Never mind, it worked quite well as a stand alone. Development work is being undertaken on Telegrafholmen, a small island near Samndhamn. It was never going to be built on but when enough money is thrown at something - you know how it goes! But work comes to a shuddering halt when blasting of the surface rock and digging reveals what looks like human bones.

There is not enough left of the bones to make a quick identification but DI Thomas Andreasson and his sidekick Aram soon narrow it down as being (probably) one of two women who both disappeared about 10 years ago. One of them is Siri Persson Grandin who was in her late 20s when she disappeared. Her husband tried to have her declared dead in unseemly haste, even though there was no body ever found. A rather large insurance payout may have pushed him along.

The other woman, Astrid, was a couple of weeks shy of her 18th birthday and seemed to have a crappy home life with a mother who partied hard and her (the mother’s) boyfriend who displayed a creepy interest in young Astrid.

Nora Linde, a financial crimes prosecutor takes an interest in this case. She sees an opportunity to maybe help someone after she felt she let down a young woman by somehow enabling a vicious man to get bail instead of being locked away. She is a good friend of Thomas the police inspector. It turns out they are each looking into one of the disappearances but could they be somehow linked?

This was not so much a thriller as a murder mystery, it took ages before we even knew who the victim was. Despite joining the series quite late, I think the characters were well fleshed out. Nora carried a lot of guilt which coloured her interactions with everyone, even her husband. Thomas was a loyal friend to her but he had his own demons. I liked that the characters personal lives were included in a sympathetic and realistic way. The clues were dribbled out quite slowly but I did guess many things (not all) correctly so it’s a good story to pit your detective skills against! It got a bit exciting towards the end but the book was generally quite restrained with the drama being more of the cerebral variety. I did enjoy the story but I’m not sure I liked it enough to want to read all the earlier books. Thanks to Amazon Crossing via Netgalley for the complimentary ARC which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

3.5 stars rounded up.

Translated from the Swedish by Marlaine Delargy, Buried in Secret by Viveca Sten is the tenth book in the Sandhamn Murders series. Skeletal remains are dug up by builders on a small island in the Stockholm Archipelago. It begins with an investigation which reopens two cold case disappearances from ten years earlier. The flashbacks to the two women’s lives were not dated as such and initially somewhat off-kilter. The narrative recounts Detective Thomas Andreasson and his team’s investigation, as well as separate enquiries by Prosecutor Nora Linde. She is on sick leave owing to a previous case (last book) gone wrong and is friends with Thomas. Whilst the beginning has a confusing impression, it then settles into a standard police procedural rhythm. Each of the various characters has history which is alluded to and some are even keeping deadly secrets. Whilst enjoying Nordic noir, this first encounter of the series was enjoyable, if above average and a three-and-a-half-star read. Interestingly, there is a 2010 TV series of the first five books titled The Sandhamn Murders. With thanks to Amazon Crossing and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and are made without fear or favour.

I’ve followed this series from the beginning, and it was one of my favorites. The last one was very dark, and its focus on sadistic domestic abuse really was not for me. However, I read the summary of this book, and it sounded like it might be a good choice. Big mistake. Nora, the protagonist, who was always a strong and intelligent woman, is falling apart, haunted by the last case and the threats made against her and her family. She drinks too much, starts fights with everyone that cares about her, devolves into paranoia and, stretching credibility, starts investigating a 10 year old case she has no business looking into, presenting herself a prosecutor, when she actually has no ties to the police department. Even the premise of the book is puzzling. When the police are notified that human bones have been found on an island and they are unable to identify the gender, would they immediately launch a full scale investigation into two women missing for 10 years? I would classify this more as psychological suspense, but I prefer the traditional Nordic Noir mysteries. I received an advance copy from Netgalley.

This is the tenth in the Sandhamm Murders series; it is the first I have read. Although it was OK as a standalone, there was constant reference to something that occurred in the past (I assume in a prior book). It was not fully explained, and I would have liked to know more about it, especially since it had such an impact on one of the main characters.

The remains of a skeleton are found when excavating on a small island. As the police look into missing persons cases, there are two possibilities. I liked how the story focused on the personal lives of not only the two possible victims, but also the professional personnel involved in the case. I also liked how the details leading to the disappearance of both missing persons was interwoven through the book, slowly unfolding. I did not like the character, Nora, at all…self destructive people always annoy me.

This was an engrossing read. Once it got going, after about 60%, I couldn’t put it down. Although this takes place in Sweden, I didn’t see it as classic “Nordic noir”. It didn’t have that cold, dark, bleak, foreboding quality. It was much lighter, set in the summer by the sea. There was some social criticism as relates to police cutbacks, but that is certainly not unique to the Nordic countries and I have read that a lot recently both in American and British books.

I do look forward to reading the next in the series; I hope that Nora will have recovered from her recent troubles and will be presented as a stronger, healthier individual. If I ever find the time, I may go back and read some of the prior books in the series.

Though this is #10 in the Sandhamn Murders series, it's my first novel & I read it as a standalone. The connections amongst the central roles remained difficult for me to understand as all hold a history. I really hadn't seen that it was #10 while requesting a copy from Netgalley. But I have no qualms as the account was super exciting & the twist, in the end, was totally stunning.

What a roller-coaster read it has been for me with the title & it is a first for me from Viveca. Now I ought to read her other works later, recognizing how stimulating this one was. Bless you, Netgalley, the Author & the Publisher for an e-ARC of the novel. I am giving my review voluntarily in exchange for a complimentary copy. Thriller fans can read the book as a standalone or as part of the series.

Buried in Secret is the tenth book in Viveca Sten’s Sandamn Murders series. I’ve read all of them. Maybe I’m just suffering from over-exposure to the series, but I have to admit, unfortunately, that I’ve enjoyed the last several books less than the earlier ones. Buried in Secret is not a bad book by any means, but one aspect of the book, which I’ll get to below, annoyed me and lessened my enjoyment.

The story is set in August 2016, several months after the conclusion of the events in the previous series book, In Bad Company. Blasting activity at a construction project on Telegrafholmen, an uninhabited island near Sandamn, has unearthed human bone fragments. Since it appears more likely than not that the bones belong to a murder victim, Stockholm police inspector Thomas Andreasson and his partner, Aram Gorgis, are assigned to investigate. Unfortunately, they have little to go on. Because of the violence of the blast, only fragments can be recovered, and there is no indication of how long they’ve been in the ground. Identifying the skeleton through DNA extraction or other forensic analysis is problematic and may be impossible.

The police are pressured to solve the case quickly so construction can resume. Attempting to discover who was buried there, they review files on several people who disappeared and were presumed dead although no body was ever found. They soon narrow their focus to two young women, Astrid Forsell and Siri Grandin, who went missing at about the same time ten years earlier.

As she often does, Sten plays with dual timelines. She intersperses flashback chapters about these women at intervals throughout the book, interrupting the primary narrative of the 2016 investigation. These flashbacks ratchet up the tension as we learn more about them before their disappearances. We are kept guessing about which woman (if either) was buried on Telegrafholmen.

So far so good. But where Sten goes wrong, in my opinion, is in how she depicts Nora Linde. Along with her lifelong friend Thomas Andreasson, Nora has been one of the two primary characters in the series. She is a prosecutor with the Economic Crimes Authority. She is spending the summer on Sandamn Island on leave from her job due to stress from the horrific case that was the subject of the previous book. Nora blames herself for letting a victim down in that case, and she also lives in fear because of a threat of violent revenge by the perpetrator’s brother, Emir Kovač.

Nora’s stress level is out of control. She is self-medicating with wine and painkillers. She’s in this frame of mind when she learns about the Telegrafholmen bones and decides to conduct her own unauthorized investigation. It’s not the first time that she’s poked around in police business that doesn’t concern her. But she can always rationalize her behavior, and she can usually count on Thomas to either welcome her help or forgive her if he doesn’t.

I’m sure that Sten is trying to show how PTSD can lead to irrational actions and potentially wreck someone’s life. But to me, she goes too far in making Nora unlikable, almost insufferable, this time around. Actually, I thought Nora went off the rails in the previous book, and now it’s gotten worse. And Sten’s writing style doesn’t help in this regard, either. Although she uses the third person, we are privy to all of Nora’s thoughts about blaming herself, her drinking, her marital concerns, and her fear of Kovač—and it’s very repetitive. A little of this goes a long way. I didn’t sign on to be Nora’s therapist.

That’s my primary gripe about the book. The mystery of the unidentified bones is intriguing. We’re kept in suspense about the identities of the victim and the perpetrator until almost the last possible moment. If only Sten had kept Nora on a more even keel, I would have enjoyed the book more and rated it more highly.

My favorite Swedes are back! Thomas Andreasson and Nora Linde come back in the tenth installment of the Sandhamn Murders Series with a case with ties to the past.

Construction work in an uninhabited island uncovers some human remains. Without an ID, police must delve into some cold cases that could be linked to the discovery. Despite being on leave after her last case, Nora can’t help but get involved, especially as she knew one of the missing girls from the cold cases. As the cases converge she will get targeted, but not by whom she expected.

I love this series so much! If you’re in the mood for some light nordic mystery, this series is the perfect choice. The whole series spans several years so it’s been fantastic to see Thomas and Nora’s lives keep evolving. With that said, I’m not sure I’m enjoying that much the direction Nora’s life is taking (hopefully it will be just a temporary thing). Her last case left took a toll on her but, instead of seeking help she’s finding solace in alcohol and treating quite unfairly all those around her. Thomas is also going through some changes in his personal live and I really hope both of them find some stability in the future.

The mystery was well done and it was nice to see both lines converging at the end. The fact that there were two parallel investigations made of this a pretty entertaining read, and the short chapters also helped to keep turning the pages quite fast.

I love the atmosphere of life on the islands the author always manages to convey and a visit there in real life is one of the things on my bucket list travel wise.

Looking forward to meeting back Thomas and Nora again for book 11!

This is her 10th book on the Sandhamn Murders and it was a especially hard for me to read about Nora as a lush. I new why she was using wine as a potential sleeping aid. She had a bad argument with Jonas and then he had to fly off for four days. Leaving Nora with Julia to keep watch. We have two potential victims that could have been left for dead 10 years prior. I don't want to let you know who they are, so you can read about it. Follow it to you own conclusions and see if they come out or not. Certain people can be looked at as bad, and others as good. People don't always come out as they do, don't let yourself get too emotional about first impressions. Viveca did a good job at putting people into situations which may or may not have been good. Read it and you'll see for yourself how it comes out in the end. I see where Camilla gets her imagination for her books.

Spannende Handlung, wunderbare Kulisse.

Whose Bones Were Found and How Did They Get There

Right across from Sandhamn, Sweden, is the island, Telegrafholmen. It was just opened for the first homes to be built. While blasting to clear the land for construction, a skeleton was uncovered or, more accurately, many small pieces of a skeleton. The investigation into the identity of the person and the circumstances behind how and why that person was buried there starts.

There are two major main storyline threads, the police investigation lead by Thomas Andreasson, and another by his longtime friend Nora Linde, a prosecutor for the Economic Crimes Authority, who had a personal relationship with one of the possible victims and an overwhelming emotional need to ensure that her fears from her last prosecution are not repeated again. There are two minor threads based upon each of the possible victims that provide what really happened ten years earlier leading up to the disappearances. Thomas’s efforts to trying to determine which two possible victims’ investigations would be the best allocation of his resources. While Thomas focused on one, Nora with pure emotion ran her own investigation of the other. The competing investigation quickly captured my intention.

The B-storyline has several threads. One is centered on Thomas and his estranged wife, Pernilla, trying to salvage their crumbling marriage. At the same time, Nora and her husband, Jonas, marriage also is in danger. On this layer cake of B-storyline threads, the icing is another thread delving into the effects of her last case and how it is affecting her current behavior. These threads make these character more real and enhanced my reading enjoyment. How these four characters change over the time of this story also provides a C-Storyline to this novel.

For the aspects of a novel that may discourage some readers. There is a low level of vulgar and rude language. There are very few instances of impious language. There is one crime against a woman, but it was described from the woman’s feelings. There is some other violence. Lastly, I did not have any problems with the translation. I have read the previous novel that caused Nora much concern in this novel. I believe that you can read this novel without first reading the previous novel as adequate information is provided in this novel to explain how that case is affecting her now.

I do recommend reading this novel on an e-reader with Internet access. The reason that many locations were mentioned that were not identified on the maps provided with the novel. I like to know the geographical relationship when a new location is mentioned. I used the Internet quite often.

I had only one issue that I bothered me, and it occurred early in the novel and was unresolved by the end of the novel. Having an issue that won’t be resolved until the next novel is something that does not sit well with me. Its nature and the timeline scope of the novel ameliorates some its impact upon me. I could not stop reading this novel. I finished it in 75% of the time that I usually take to finish a novel of this length. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel as I have enjoyed four other novels in this series. I have purchased the other five novels to read. This author has reaffirmed her position as a Must-Read author for me. If the publisher’s teaser looks interesting, I strongly recommend reading this novel. I want to rate it with four and a half stars but will round up to five stars.

I received a free e-book version of this novel through NetGalley from Amazon Crossing. My review is based only by my own reading experience of this book. I wish to thank Amazon Crossing for the opportunity to read and review this novel early.

The tenth story in the now 10-book Sandham Murders series is kicked off with a human skeleton of indeterminate age exposed during construction on the uninhabited island of Telegrafholmen, located across from the town of Sandham. The police and coroner are naturally called, with Thomas Andreasson and his partner Aram Gorgis heading the investigation. They’re under a time crunch to solve the mystery, as the construction project is meant to create exclusive homes on Telegrafholmen.
Meanwhile, Nora Linde, a prosecutor barely recovering from her last extremely stressful case, drinks too much and can’t sleep, and is terrified that a man who threatened her (on the last case) will come to her home.
The police reopen cold cases of missing persons from ten years earlier, based on the potential age of the skeleton, and begin investigating. Knowing some of the people a little, Nora gets involved, asking questions though she’s not even on the case. She's got to be quiet about her not being assigned to the case, as she could get into trouble professionally for inserting herself, unasked, into the investigation.

This was a pretty addictive story; the author switches between Thomas and Nora investigating, while dealing with their messed-up personal lives, and shows us the last several weeks in the known activities of two of the missing people from ten years ago.
I’ve never read any of the previous books, it I can see myself tracking them down as I liked both Nora and Thomas, and their conscientiousness and concern for the victims and their families.
I liked how the author even surprised me a little, even with the relatively small suspect pool.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Amazon Crossing for this ARC in exchange for my review.

This is the tenth book in the Sandhamn Murder series. This is an excellent mystery/suspense series that takes place in Sweden. I really enjoy the main characters of DI Thomas Andreasson and prosecutor Nora Linde as well as the complex plots.

Thomas and Nora have a close, platonic friendship and are always there for each other. Each is involved in an investigation in which bones are discovered that seem to be related to one of two missing person's cases from ten years ago. Thomas is working on the case officially, but Nora is working on her own when she's supposed to be on leave from her job. Nora is not at her best in this book as she is dealing with the fallout from a prior case, and it will take all of Thomas's patience to help her. Nora's unauthorized involvement causes complications and danger for both Nora and Thomas. If you are a fan of Camilla Lackberg, you will also love this series by Viveca Sten.

Nora, still haunted by a threat made by a man's brother, finds her solace in alcohol. It drives a wedge between her and Jonas. Meanwhile bone fragments found on an island near Sandhamn lead Thomas and Aram to investigate persons gone missing in the last ten years or so. Two candidates emerge--a teenage girl and a woman in a troubled marriage. Thomas and Aram believe the husband of the woman capable of murder, and his efforts to have his wife declared dead after being missing only one year only add to the suspicion. Nora focuses on the teenage girl, uncovering things useful to the investigation. However, Nora is on sick leave from the Economic Crimes Bureau and poses as a prosecutor assigned to the investigation. Will she get in trouble or get Thomas into trouble for her unauthorized investigation bordering on professional misconduct? Will Thomas and Aram report her? I like Nora less and less with each succeeding book. I hope the next book finds her in a twelve step program to deal with her alcoholism. (3.5 stars)

Well what a book! This is my first book from Viveca Sten and although this book can be read on its own it definitely refers to events that happened before.
This story tells of two women disappearing around the same time 10 years prior to the time at which the story is set. The police is investigating their cases again as bones were found on an island, Telegrafholmen which is very close to where both women used to live. Also involved in the investigation is a prosecutor on sick leave who needs the distraction to battle her own demons.
This book has a lot to offer: depression, anxiety, marital problems, rape, parental abuse, parental neglect but also compassion, friendship, love, perseverance.
It also keeps you on the edge of your seat. My heart rate increased at time I was so anxious. It is a well written book that will keep you turning the pages. Recommended.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing a copy of the book.

This tenth novel in the Sandhamn series builds slowly to a tense climax. The story can be read alone, but it helps to know the series characters and the previous events that impinge upon it. The friendship between Thomas and Nora faces challenges as Nora navigates the crushing fear and guilt arising from a previous case and tries to assuage them by involving herself secretly in Thomas's current investigation. This mental torment also impacts her relationship with her husband and daughter, adding to the tension of the narrative as the various plot threads weave together until the final revelation. Chapters alternate between past and present in a way that can be confusing at first, but the change in timelines and points of view builds the suspense as the plot unravels. Buried in Secret is a worthy addition to an excellent series.

So I guess I've arrived at the party late again. Why did I not realise when I requested it. But all is not lost. It reads well as a standalone novel. But it does refer back occasionally but not enough for it to ruin the read. However, this is the 10th novel in the on going series of the Sandhamn Murders and it is set in Sweden.

It's a detective story about bones found on an island. The bones are old and could be one of three girls. The book basis itself on those three girls and who the bones could belong too.

The story kept me guessing which I really liked. I've never read this author before but I would again.

Bones are found at a construction site and with the ensuing investigation, Nora Linde finds herself spiraling out of control from the fallout of a previous case.

I enjoy this series immensely and was disheartened to read about Nora's physical and emotional decline. However, I also came to realize that no matter how strong a character appears, even the strongest need help.

Will this case that she immerses herself in against better judgement be her permanent downfall.....or her redemption?

This book is due out in 2022. Great start to the new year!

B in Secret by V. Stern, published by Amazon Crossing, is book ten in the Sandhamn Series.

Thomas Andreasson is assigned to a cold case. He's investigating the find of skeletons. His friend, Nora Linde, gets involved too. But she has to deal with some serious issues.
This story is set in Sweden and contains dark elements. This mystery/thriller is told in a dual pov, jumps between past and present and is a fast paced, action packed read thta had me in suspense from start til the last page, til the spectacular showdown, 4,5 stars.

While I really enjoyed the first several books in the series, the last few were changed from procedurals into a meddling outsider doing the investigation. It didn’t work for me and also lost the sense of place which was one of the strengths of the early books. I had enjoyed the feeling of being in Sweden and learning about it.

Most overused line in this book: her eyes brimmed with unshed tears. 😭

When blasting for construction unearths a buried body on the island of Telegrafholmen, Detective Inspector Thomas Andreasson is called in to investigate the case. Because the bones were partially destroyed by the explosion, only fragments have been recovered, making the job of figuring out who the body belonged to even more challenging. While he begins looking into any missing persons cases from the area, his old friend Nora Linde is not doing very well. After one of her previous cases didn't end well, Nora has been on sick leave from her job as a Prosecutor with the Economic Crimes Authority. The police are soon able to discover that two missing persons cases from 10 years ago seem to be the best possibilities for the unknown victim. One woman, Siri, was unhappily married and it was assumed that she had gone off and committed suicide. When her husband tried to have her declared dead so he could collect her life insurance in an unusually short time, people began to suspect her disappearance might have a more sinister explanation. Nothing could be proved against him, and he collected the money and went on with his life. The other possibility for the victim is Astrid, a teenaged girl who either ran away from her alcoholic mother (as the town gossips would have it) or else was the victim of a tragic accident (as her mother believes). When Nora learns that Astrid's disappearance is being re-opened, she begins asking questions, since Astrid had been a babysitter for her young children years ago. However, Nora has no legal authority to be investigating anything at the moment, so her poking around not only puts her in possible legal jeopardy, but also physical danger as there are people who don't want the secrets from 10 years ago to come out.

This is the 10th book in the Sandhamn Murders series, and since I haven't read any of the previous ones, at times it felt like I was walking in on the middle of a play. There were plenty of references to the case that had caused so much trouble for Nora, but it was never really spelled out very well as to what had happened. The relationship between Nora and Thomas is also a bit unclear. Apparently they were friends from childhood, but it seems a lot has happened in their relationship over the years that isn't explained. I did enjoy the story and the investigations into what happened so long ago. It is a bit annoying that the female characters, then and now, were a bit helpless and reckless with their safety. But I guess if they weren't there wouldn't be a story!

I received and Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

It wasn't until after I started reading the novel I realized that this was book #10 in the Sandhamn Murders series. Thankfully, that cleared up some of the confusion I had in the first few chapters as I felt there was no real introduction to the main characters. Thankfully, aside from a few backstory items that confused me; I was still able to carry on like this was a standalone novel.

What initially drew me into the book was that one of the potentially victims was named "Astrid" - the same name we named our new puppy. This may be a poor reason to pick a novel; and I would agree with you. I am not normally a fan of Nordic Noir, and the Sandhamn Murders series is very stereotypical Nordic Noir. The story had a very slow build up. I got about 26% of the way through and then I stopped reading for about a month. I didn't want to leave this one as a DNF; so I did skip ahead in the novel so I could leave an accurate review on the writing.

I must say, the story was absolutely enchanting once it began to pick up. Viveca Sten ability to describe Nora's thoughts and feelings made me feel I was right there the entire time experiencing the fear with her. I am not sure what the original Swedish text read; but I do want to give a shout out to Marlaine Delargy - the translator of the novel - as I felt there were no gaps that left me confused about the story line.

I don't know if I would go back and read the first nine books of the series....but I would check the 11th book out of a library to figure out what happened after that cliffhanger.
