**From the winner of TOI Write India Challenge 2018**
It is 1876 and the city of Cardim is rife with a smell of murders and malice…
Joseph Flanders, a 67-year-old Philologist, is alarmed when a street urchin who had handed him a mysterious artifact a day earlier is arrested on the suspicion of being a notorious serial killer. To make matters worse, the old man soon receives a cryptic note stating that the box in his possession holds the clue to the murders.
Maya claims to be a junior clerk by profession, but it is clear that she has interests quite outside the realm of accountancy. For some strange reason she has been 'investigating' the murders and is convinced that there is more to the affair than meets the eye.
When five guards at the prison facility that the serial killer is being held are found murdered, her fears are promptly proven true. As rumors about the murderer spread and Cardim is plunged back into terror, it falls on the unlikely pair of Joseph and Maya to piece the macabre puzzle together and decipher the mystery before fear devours the metropolis.

I received a copy of this novel from storyorigin in return for an honest review of the book.
I hated giving this 3 stars, I really wanted to give this 5 stars because the concept and the story were fantastic but I found myself unable to really get into the novel. Don't get me wrong I will still recommend this book to my friends and anyone I can, I just had a hard time getting into it. The characters were richly developed and the story moved at a pretty fast pace, but for some reason as I was reading it I couldn't imagine the scenes like I do in most books.
I do believe that this book deserves to be read, especially by anyone who loves a good historical fiction mystery novel, I personally just couldn't get into it. I might try picking this book up again at a later date and starting from the beginning again and giving it another try to see if my feelings on it change, but for now I thought it was a good novel that I just couldn't really get into.
The Murderer of Cardim is a story based in the fictional city of Cardim and centres around Joseph Flanders, a 67-year-old Philologist and Maya a junior clerk with interests outside the realm of accountancy. They don't seem to have much in common. In her spare time, Maya tries to solve the case of a serial killer and Flanders, concentrates on encrypting an ancient artefact, he has been given by someone on the streets. So far, so good but not new. The interesting part about this is the fact, that even though the story is fictional, real geographical regions are still woven into it. When you start reading, it seems to be a well-written but typical fantasy story with not many surprises. How wrong that turns out to be. The Murderer of Cardim is anything but conventional and leaves you guessing almost until the last page. Absolutely brilliant.
Ethics statement: I received a copy of this book for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
I was initially drawn in by the book blurb, and was quickly engrossed in the mystery of the box. However, the changing viewpoints and the slow exposition, made it hard for me to feel fully immersed in the story.
The story took many twists and turns, but ultimately ended up where I expected.
I feel like some of the story build should have been done at the start of the book, and then let the story play out at the end. I found myself feeling disppointed that we'd jumped back into the past again, when all I wanted to know is what was going to happen to the main character.
I found this story interesting. My attention was grabbed from the beginning and kept throughout. I found the book well written and would recommend reading.
